Over the past year, we have seen Qualcomm and MediaTek trade barbs back and forth on the value of a “true” octa core processor. This rivalry was fanned when MediaTek announced in July that they were going to produce the first processor capable of running all eight cores at one time, the MT6592. When announced, MediaTek hoped to have them in production by November. It appears they have managed to get the processor out a bit early as Chinese manufacturer UMI revealed a new device, the UMI X2S, earlier this week at the 2013 Hong Kong Electronics Fair.

The UMI X2S is a successor to the UMI X2 and as expected, is targeted at the Chinese market only. The UMI X2S will be running the MT6592 at 1.5GHz and will come with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The display is 5 inches running at 1920×1080 resolution with full HD support. The UMI X2S is expected to sell for between 1,499 Yuan and 1,999 Yuan ($246 to $328 USD).

In contrast to MediaTek’s work to utilize all eight cores at once, Qualcomm claims consumers are better served by improved processors and a combination of dedicated processors for specific duties. Some benchmark testing that emerged earlier this year seems to point toward the two strategies producing similar results, although it appears the MediaTek chips used in the tests were running at higher speeds than what UMI is using for the X2S.
