Firefox Beta gets new Home design on Android
Nov 1st 2013, 14:49, by Robert Nelson

Firefox Beta for Android has received yet another update. This latest update has recently landed in the Play Store and it brings an updated startup screen. This is being called “Home” and it is described as being a place where users can get “quick and easy access to their browsing data.”

That data will include everything from the top sites to history, bookmarks and your Reading List. The Home design will offer thumbnails for Top Sites and also allow the user to pin tabs. Users will see Home when they launch the app and from here they can open a new tab, surf to a site by entering an address in the URL bar or by tapping something from the Top Sites or History sections.

This update also brought some search related changes. In this case that means the addition of Bing and Yahoo! as search options. While the Firefox Beta app is available globally, these additional search options are only going to apply for those in the US, Canada and France. The default search engine can be switched by navigating to Menu -> Search Settings.

The password manager now also supports script-generated password fields. And aside from the items already mentioned, this update also improved performance for “some” NVIDIA devices and the CSP implantation now supports multiple policies. Lastly, there were also a few developer specific items. Those include the following;

  • No longer a prompt when websites use appcache
  • Support for CSS image orientation property
  • Indexed DB can now be used as a “optimistic” storage area

Amazon Kindle First brings promise of reading "next month's new releases today"
Nov 1st 2013, 14:06, by Robert Nelson

Amazon has announced Kindle First today. Kindle First will allow Kindle users to download and read an ebook up to a month ahead of the general release. Basically, this is providing early access to new ebooks. For Amazon Prime members, you will be able to download and read these books for free and those without Prime, these ebooks will be priced at $1.99.

While this all sounds good so far, there are some limitations. To begin with, these ebooks will be titles that are being published by Amazon Publishing. And on top of that, there will only be a small selection of titles to pick from each month. Or in other words, you may not be able to score a free (or $1.99) ebook each and every month depending on your preferences.

That being said, the process is simple and there is support for all Kindle devices — including Android devices using the Kindle app. Amazon has set up a Kindle First page that breaks down the process, which is really nothing more than picking the book you want and then downloading it to your device to begin reading. And to make sure you don’t miss out on any future releases, Amazon has set up a monthly email.

The titles available this month include Things We Set on Fire by Deborah Reed, We Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and Sue Carswell, No Place for a Dame by Connie Brockway and Silent Echo by J.R. Rain. Also, just to clarify, regardless of whether you are Prime and get these for free, or choose to stay non-Prime and pay the $1.99 — once these have been downloaded they remain in your collection.

Anyway, while the non-Prime price seems to be attractive, this really appears to be adding yet another perk for Prime members. Not to mention, offering another reason to choose Kindle, whether you have a hardware device or are using the Android app.

Otherwise, in recent Amazon news, we also saw a new Kindle-only publication launch earlier in the week. That one was called “Day One” and promises to showcase one short story and one poem each week. Day One launched with an introductory price of $9.99, but will eventually settle in at $19.99 per year.

Sony teases Jelly Bean and Kit Kat updates, details latest for WALKMAN
Nov 1st 2013, 13:31, by Robert Nelson

Without revealing much in the way of specifics, Sony did hit up Twitter with mention of both Android 4.4 Kit Kat and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean earlier this morning. There was mention of them being excited, however the they went on to say they will not be revealing anything additional until sometime next week. The details are expected to include “news on: 4.3, 4.4; products and more.”

Basically, if you happen to be carrying a Sony Xperia branded device and are on the lookout for details of a Jelly Bean or Kit Kat update — make sure to pay close attention next week. Otherwise, in some news that seems to have gotten buried in the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 Kit Kit excitement yesterday, Sony also detailed their latest update for the WALKMAN app.

The details of the update come by way of Anu Kirk, who is the Director of Music Unlimited for the Sony Entertainment Network. From what we are seeing, this update came with the focus on removing the difficulty of finding what you want in your collection. Kirk mentioned how they have been “working to build the kind of service that knows what you want, and brings it to you every day.”

That being said, this latest release brings new Smart Playlists along with increased options for rearranging and editing playlists. It was said how it should now be easier to customize those playlists to get them just they way you want. In addition, there was also mention of how TrackID now talks with Music Unlimited. This means users will be able to listen to the songs they identified directly from the WALKMAN app.

And looking forward, Sony did say they plan to expand the availability of Music Unlimited to additional countries and also add support for more devices and make improvements to the core service’s performance in 2014. That bit also came along with a teaser about how they “have a few surprises in store, too.”
