| HP Slate 10 Android tablet slips through FCC Oct 24th 2013, 22:59, by Nate Swanner The HP Slate tablets have been on our radar for some time now, though nothing of note has materialized. Now we see that HP has slid two different models through the FCC, though not much is known about them. Other than at least one will run Android, the details are light. 
We'll start with the HP Slate 10 HD, which sports a 1280 x 800 10-inch screen and Marvel PXA986 ARM SoC. Liliputing is reporting that it will also have Beats Audio, which could be the cause for the red housing. The Slate 10 will run a variant of Android, and we're hoping HP doesn't leave potentials users lagging behind.
The other tablet is dubbed the HP 10 1900, which we'd like to assume is a hint at a better screen resolution. a 1280 x 800 10-inch screen is a bit dated, but something more dense would be appreciated. While we know the Slate 10 will be an Android tablet, nothing was noted about the HP 10 190o's operating system. Both tablets have similar specs, too. Each will have GSM and CDMA capabilities, standard WiFi credentials, and Bluetooth 3.0. The Slate 10 is also said to be offered in WiFi or 4G variants, and support Micro SD Card storage as well as sport a front and rear camera. While not the best tablet (or maybe tablets) you can get with Android, the price will be the real determining factor.
|  | HTC One mini and HTC Desire 601 headed to Rogers Oct 24th 2013, 22:13, by Nate Swanner Canadian HTC fans are about to get a double dose of smartphone. Rogers is reportedly getting the HTC One mini and mid-range HTC Desire 601 on November 4th. While no pricing has been revealed yet, the handsets will both be heading to Canada. 
The HTC One mini is a scaled down version of the flagship One, and the hardware scales almost as much as the screen size. It has a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 screen, and 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB RAM. It will carry 16GB storage, and 4MP Ultrapixel shooter. Compare that to the 2GB RAM, Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, full 1920 x 1080 4.7-inch screen, and OIS on the camera you find on the One, and the mini really lives up to its name.
The Desire makes no allusions to being a device for the technophiles out there. It has a 4.5-inch 540 x 960 screen with the same processor as the One mini. It sports a 5MP camera capable of shooting video in HD, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. Luckily, it comes with a Micro SD Card slot. For Rogers customers, the lineup just got a lot more diverse. For the average consumer, these are very good options. The One mini keeps the same attractive build as both big brothers, and the Desire is a rock solid HTC smartphone. While neither will make a lot of waves, they're both very capable devices.
| | Amazon reports huge sales, but still has a net loss Oct 24th 2013, 21:28, by Nate Swanner Amazon announced their Q3 2013 earnings today, and results are mixed. A huge jump in net sales helped the online retailer make an impact and bottleneck losses, but they're still there. Though not as bad as in previous quarters, Amazon still takes a hit on their bottom line. 
With a reported net sales figure of %17.09 billion, you’d expect Amazon would be on easy street. That figure is up 26% over last year, when Amazon reported $13.81 billion in net sales. Those figures don't include "unfavorable" exchange rate fluctuations, which totalled $332 million for this quarter.
That all belies Amazon's continued losses, where they saw an operating loss of $25 million. That's nearly identical to the $28 million in Q3 2012, and is indicative of losses elsewhere. Amazon reports a net loss of $41 million for Q3 2013, or $0.09/share. While troubling and perhaps alarming, it's nowhere near the $274 million the lost in Q3 2012, or $0.60/share. While net losses are always troubling, something has clearly changed at Amazon. On a 26% net sales increase, they stymied net losses by 86%. Jeff Bezos has never been one for scrambling to improve, as his letters to investors routinely highlight how happy their customers are. Amazon loses money just about every quarter, yet investors are lynching the CEO. Whatever Amazon is doing right, it's starting to show in a big way.
