Google today announced that they have been actively hunting down malicious apps and games in the Android Market with a service called Bouncer.  Advising that the system has been in place for a while now, Google tells us that it uses a number of checks. Aside from scanning new uploads, the service runs each application looking for malware-like behaviors and also scans developer accounts to "prevent malicious and repeat-offending developers from coming back." According to Google, this has helped lead to a roughly 40 percent  decrease in malware over 2011.
It's probably no coincidence that Google makes this announcement on the heels of the recent Android.Counterclank scare.  Initially thought to be malicious in nature, it was later found to be really strong, intrusive advertising.  Perhaps Google wants to help clear up any misconception oversight on their part.
Of course this Bouncer stuff won't extend beyond the Android Market so we're not totally free and clear of malware.  People are still going to look for exploits and loopholes in code and Google won't be there to hold your hand should you go downloading something from some random website in the middle of the night.

Spacetime Studios has begun teasing the next release in their popular Legends series of MMO games for Android.  Expected to arrive in March at the annual Game Developers Summit, Dark Legends opens with the player recently raised and under the direction of the vampire that sired them.  If you've ever played Pocket Legends or Star Legends then you know full well what your in for - a time killer of the highest order.
Dark Legends puts players up against undead, werewolves, demons and humans in both single and multilpayer modes. The combat system includes new mechanics (charge attacks, drain enemies),  but the deeper narrative is what really has our attention.  There's nothing quite like a rich, immerse story (with vampires and undead) that has us burying our face in our phones.

Rhapsody has today released a full-featured and tablet-optimized version of their Android application.  Designed with tablets sized 9inches or larger and running Honeycomb (3.0+), the app features a magazine-like layout and looks simply gorgeous.  Of course all the features of the previous release are still there, including customized playlists, reviews, live performances, and more.  You don't get to be "#1 subscription music service in the USA" by cutting corners.
"We didn't just resize Rhapsody – we re-imagined the entire experience for the tablet," said Brendan Benzing, chief product officer, Rhapsody.  "The tablet is not a giant phone or a mini computer. It's your companion on the couch, in transit and out in the world, and therefore people experience music and consume content differently than they would on a computer, portable device, TV or home audio system."
Features:
  • Magazine-style layout with artist biographies and album reviews from some of the top music writers in the industry
  • Unlimited access to over 14 million songs
  • Customized playlists, new music recommendations
  • Exclusive content: artist interviews, live performances and pre-release listening
  • App is free, service is $9.99/month for unlimited listening on your phone, tablet, computer or via connected devices like Sonos.

MetroPCS, in an effort to rope in more 4G LTE smartphone buyers, has decided to extend its $40 4G LTE rate plan to all of their device.  Previously, consumers with handsets like the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G or LG Esteem had to choose from the $50 or $60 plans.  This new option gives first-time buyers and light users a third choice with the 100MB data bucket.  As was the case before, all plans include unlimited talk and text.  While it's tough to imagine anyone wanting to cap themselves at 100MB for 4G LTE data we still applaud MetroPCS for giving customers more no-contract choice.

Let's face it, Google Docs never was the prettiest nor most functional app on Android and that's quite a shame. Being an official Google app, you'd at least expect it to follow the design guidelines the very same developer stated. Another major drawback was the lack of offline reading and editing.
Both these issues have been fixed in the newest edition of the Google Docs app. You can now download your documents for offline reading and sync them later when you're connected to the internet again the selected documents will automatically sync - but of course you can also tap the sync button.

A few enhancements have been made for your tablet as well. Documents now appear in high resolution and you can 'flip' pages just like you would on a book and the overall experience is a little bit better.
Google Docs doesn't get updated that often but when there's an update, it's a big one. Have you used Google Docs in the past, did you stay away from it? Will this update change anything? Let us know in the comments below.

Sprint today announced the wallet-friendly ZTE Optik, a $100 Honeycomb tablet with respectable hardware.  Running Android 3.2 and powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, additional specs include 1GB RAM and 16GB storage.  The Optik features a 7-inch capacitive touch display with 1280x800 (WXGA) resolution and also offers a 5-MP/2-MP camera combo. In other words, this is one of the best budget tablets available.
In terms of connectivity, the ZTE Optik supports Sprint's 3G network as opposed to WiMAX or LTE.  It's also worth pointing out that Wi-Fi  is 802.11 b/g and not the 'n' that some of you might be looking for.
The ZTE Optik arrives on Sunday, February 5th at $99.99 with a two-year service agreement or $349.99 as a standalone purchase.  We'd like to see the price of the off-contract model come down a bit, however it should be a great first tablet experience for users.
Consumers can pick which data plan they need/want and have four options:
  • $19.99 for 1GB of data
  • $34.99 for 3GB of data
  • $49.99 for 6GB of data
  • $79.99 for 12GB of data

Mobile hardware monolith Qualcomm reported their first quarter earnings yesterday with an understandable amount of gusto. Despite a venerable position in the market and years of growth and experience, Qualcomm managed to bring in enough profit at $4.7 billion to break their company record. While Qualcomm is known predominately as the manufacturer of the Snapdragon mobile processor, Qualcomm produces a bulk amount of the total hardware found in mobile phones. In fact, open up practically any cellphone and you'll find some sort of Qualcomm chip. Given how profitable the company already was and with competition in the field growing, it's impressive that it continues to climb in value. Kudos, Qualcomm!
Check out the full presser after the break!

HTC is in the process of updating a number of their Android-based handsets found to have a Wi-Fi security vulnerability.  According to HTC, many of the devices that were affected have already been fixed, however additional models may require a bit of manual work.  The Wi-Fi bug was said to potentially allow an app with "ACCESS_WIFI_STATE" permissions to access Wi-Fi passwords for any network that the device is connected to.
The issue was initially discovered in September by security researchers Chris Hessing and Bret Jordan who worked with HTC to develop a patch.  Chances are good that your handset, if affected, was already fixed over the last four month.  For those who want or need to update their HTC Android smartphone, you are advised to check out HTC's help center.
It's also worth pointing out that Google has done a scan of every application in the Android Market and found that there are no apps currently exploiting this vulnerability.
HTC has developed a fix for a small WiFi issue affecting some HTC phones. Most phones have received this fix already through regular updates and upgrades. However, some phones will need to have the fix manually loaded. Please check back next week for more information about this fix and a manual download if you need to update your phone. - HTC

It's the New York Giants versus the New England Patriots this year (Giants all the way, for anyone who cares about my opinion), and the NFL wants to make sure that anyone attending the game of games is going to have the best time ever. With this in mind, they've released the official Super Bowl app, which gives attendees a map and the down-low on local food and entertainment venues, as well as official Super Bowl events that'll be happening in the area. For the social types, the integrated NFL Huddle will be providing any and all info and grandstanding via social media. The app also provides a 3D map of the stadium itself, so you can plan your bathroom trips and food runs ahead of time. Just like the game itself, spectating is all about strategy.
You can get the app from the Android Market at the link below, but if you are going to the Super Bowl, you should know I'm insanely jealous. Just sayin'.
