Gartner: Tablet sales to double in 2012

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 11:20 AM PDT

According to research firm Gartner, tablet sales will nearly double (98 percent increase) in 2012, largely on the backs of Apple's iPad.  Forecasted to reach 118 million sales this year, that number will more than triple by 2016.

As Gartner sees it, Android should pull in 32 percent of 2012's numbers however that share is set to rise while Apple's tapers a bit.  By the 2016, Android could account for 137.6 million ( ) of 369.2 million tablets while the iPad will rake in 45.9 percent, or 169.6 million devices. Where will Microsoft (Windows 8) be in all of this? Projected to be only 4.1  percent this year, they could hold 11.8 percent of the pie by 2016.

Gartner Says Worldwide Media Tablets Sales to Reach 119 Million Units in 2012

Enterprise Sales of Media Tablets Will Account for Approximately 35 Percent of Sales in 2015

STAMFORD, Conn., April 10, 2012— Worldwide media tablet sales to end users are forecast to total 118.9 million units in 2012, a 98 percent increase from 2011 sales of 60 million units, according to Gartner, Inc.
Apple's iOS continues to be the dominant media tablet operating system (OS), as it is projected to account for 61.4 percent of worldwide media tablet sales to end users in 2012 (see Table 1). Despite the arrival of Microsoft-based devices to this market, and the expected international rollout of the Kindle Fire, Apple will continue to be the market leader through the forecast period.

"Despite PC vendors and phone manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie and launching themselves into the media tablet market, so far, we have seen very limited success outside of Apple with its iPad," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. "As vendors struggled to compete on price and differentiate enough on either the hardware or ecosystem, inventories were built and only 60 million units actually reached the hands of consumers across the world. The situation has not improved in early 2012, when the arrival of the new iPad has reset the benchmark for the product to beat."

"It appears that this year competitors have waited to see what Apple would bring out — because there were very few announcements of new media tablets at either the Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress. Many vendors will wait for Windows 8 to be ready and will try to enter the market with a dual-platform approach, hoping that the Microsoft brand could help them in both the enterprise and consumer markets."

Microsoft tablets are projected to account for 4.1 percent of media tablet sales this year, and grow to 11.8 percent of sales by the end of 2016. Windows 8 is Microsoft's official entrance into the media tablet market.

"IT departments will see Windows 8 as the opportunity to deploy tablets on an OS that is familiar to them and with devices offered by many enterprise-class suppliers," Ms. Milanesi said. "This means that we see Windows 8 as a strong IT-supplied offering more so than an OS with a strong consumer appeal."

Gartner analysts said enterprise sales of media tablets will account for about 35 percent of total tablet sales sold in 2015. These sales will not be clearly defined as enterprise purchases. Gartner expects enterprises to allow tablets as part of their buy your own device (BYOD) program. More of these tablets will be owned by consumers who use them at work.

"This poses a big threat to vendors that thought about focusing on the enterprise market who will now have to become appealing to consumers as well," Ms. Milanesi said. "This is exactly the same trend that vendors such as RIM had to face in the smartphone market. The difference here is that tablets have been created for consumers first and then relied on an ecosystem of apps and services that make them more manageable in the enterprise. When the deployment will come from the IT department we believe that operating systems such as Windows 8 will have an advantage as long as they are not seen as a compromise in usability for the users."

Android tablets are forecast to account for 31.9 percent of media tablet sales in 2012. Gartner analysts said the main issue with Android tablets has been the lack of applications that are dedicated to tablets and therefore take advantage of their capabilities. Gartner's consumer survey data shows that consumers are running many of their apps on their mobile phones and their tablets.

Big four carriers partner to fight smartphone theft

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 09:44 AM PDT

The top four wireless carriers in the United States have come together over a singular, growing issue: smartphone theft.  Verizon, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile USA are teaming up with the FCC to create a national database of stolen smartphones which should be in place over the next six months.  Together these four providers account for 90 percent of the U.S. mobile base and each will be able to help disable devices once officially reported as stolen.

The plan is to merge the carriers databases into one national database within 18 months and make it even harder to activate a device on another carrier.  The partnership will be endorsed by the CTIA and will focus on educating consumers on the proper steps to secure and protect their smartphone.  There will be four voluntary industry commitments in place which address the issue of stolen smartphones.

1. Implement databases to prevent reactivation of stolen smartphones.
2A. Notify consumers of features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
2B. Educate consumers about features to secure/lock smartphones with passwords.
3. Educate consumers about applications to remotely lock/locate/erase data from smartphones.
4. Educate consumers about smartphone theft, protections and preventative measures.

Blackberry Playbook to nix the side-loading of apps

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 08:37 AM PDT

When the BlackBerry Playbook was first announced, there were a few big things to be excited for. Its WebOS-like multi-tasking was beautiful and brilliant, its web browsing abilities were extremely well-designed, and the caveat? The ability to run a supposed 80% of Android apps by sideloading them. It seemed destined to do moderately well, even if it didn't do great. Of course, we all know how history actually played out; the sales were bad enough that RIM ended up pulling an HP and dropping the prices of the tablets. Still, those that did end up with a Playbook had almost a pseudo-Android tablet with that app sideloading ability. If you're one of those users, you may be disappointed soon.

Alec Saunders, VP of developer releations at RIM, in response to a user question, stated,

"We're removing side loading for consumers. Pretty sure we've got a solution for [developers to install]."

This action is in response to concern over piracy of Android apps and is being made in support of Android developers, an altruistic move if I've ever heard one. The question here is will this hurt sales of RIM's tablet, especially given that there's a rumored sequel around the corner? When you're doing your best to sell a product that isn't faring particularly well, every feature of that device is a potential selling point. Taking one away? Well...

Support of the developers is definitely a good reason to pull such a move, but was it the right one? Will this make a negative impact on sales of the Playbook and its potential successor? Let us know what you think in the comments!

"Amazon's well-designed API and rapid support allowed us to help our enterprise publishing customers be first on the Fire."

Instagram notches 5 million Android downloads in first week

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 06:26 AM PDT

If you needed proof that Android users were anxious to get their hands on Instagram then we've got it for you.  According to figures in the Google Play Store, Instagram has eclipsed 5 million downloads already and is headed to 10 million.  The numbers are quite remarkable when you consider that the app had only been around six days when it passed the threshold.

Other fun figures to consider for Instagram include 430,000 pre-registration signups in few days that followed the beta program, and 2,000 sign-ups a minute when the app went live in the Google Play Store.  The graph indicates the number of downloads has subsided quite a bit since it first took off however we're pretty certain most developers would be happy with the "dwindling" figures nonetheless.
