Posted: 17 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

While Sprint is just starting to launch LTE devices, Verizon is expanding its already existing LTE network, and it looks like 27 lucky markets are going to get a taste of LTE speeds soon. Big Red announced that it'll be launching LTE in the following cities this Thursday. We took the liberty of breaking it down by state.

  • Alabama: Auburn and Tuscaloosa
  • Arkansas: Pine Bluff, Siloam Springs, and Van Buren
  • California: Visala/Porterville

  • Oregon: Salem/Albany/Corvallis
  • South Dakota: Pierre

So if you live in one of the cities above, Thursday will be your lucky day.  in addition to the expansion, Verizon has announced that they're making improvements and enhancements in existing LTE markets, which include:

  • Arizona: Phoenix and Tucson
  • California: Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Sacramento, Salinas/Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo and Stockton
  • Colorado: Colorado Springs and Fort Collins/Loveland

Please excuse us while we take a mental breath.....

Now, if you live in any of the cities listed above, you're either getting some fresh LTE love, or some improved coverage. Either one seems like a win to us. According to the numbers, Verizon will cover 230 markets with these new additions, which comprises about two-thirds of the population in the U.S.

So did your city make the list? Anyone feeling left out because they don't have LTE coverage? Sound off in the comments!

Droid Fighter to be the Motorola Razr HD?

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 01:38 PM PDT

We first caught wind of the Droid Fighter back in February, in a leaked Verizon inventory shot. Obviously we're past the rumored April 12th launch date, but there's still some credibility to the rumor. Last month, a blurry shot (shown above) of a new Motorola device leaked, along with some specs and the Fighter name. TechRadar has some new information, in the form of some leaked EXIF files, on the Droid Fighter. According to the latest rumors, the Fighter will be packing quite a bit of oomph:

  • 4.6-inch 720p HD display (hence the Razr HD name)
  • ICS, most likely with a bit of Motorola flair thrown in
  • 16GB of onboard storage
  • A 13.1MP rear camera with the same f2.4 aperture as the iPhone 4S

Sadly, we don't know more about the Razr HD at this point, but the given specs point to a powerhouse of a device. If Motorola releases the device with a Razr Maxx-esque battery, they could have another killer release on their hands. More on this as it develops.

So what do you think about Moto's possible shift to screen resolution, as opposed to focusing on the biggest, baddest processor in a device? Anyone excited about the Razr HD so far? Drop a comment below!

Read it Later rebrands as ‘Pocket’, goes free for Android

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 07:55 AM PDT

Read It Later, a popular app designed to save and share web content for offline reading, has gotten a brand new makeover.  Effective immediately, the app is now free across multiple platforms under its new name, Pocket.  The new app features a completely fresh new UI with support for all the same types of content, including websites, emails, video and more.  If you're looking for a way to sync content across phone or tablet, then you'll want to start here.

Introducing Pocket from Pocket on Vimeo.

We've been a huge fan of the way Read It Later was able to provide clean and easy access to our favorite web articles and look forward to seeing how Pocket handles things.  Be sure to check it out for your smartphone, tablet, and Kindle Fire and start synchronizing your reading!

Pocket for Android (Google Play)

More Than Just Reading - Top App "Read It Later's" Newest Version Becomes the Now Free "Pocket" to Easily Save Web Articles, Videos and More to View Later

New Pocket App Leads Content Shifting Category with a Beautiful New Design that Makes Viewing Later on Any Post-PC Device Easy
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, APRIL 17, 2012 - Four years ago, Read it Later was created to allow users to save their web content to view later on their own schedule. One year ago, Read It Later had 2.5 million users; now it has 4.5 million. This growth made it the number one paid news app for Android and Kindle Fire and a top app for iPhone and iPad. Today, the company announced a new version of their flagship app -- now free across all devices -- and a new name, Pocket.
Pocket is for when people discover an interesting article, video or web page, but don't have time to view it. Once saved to Pocket, the list of content is visible on any device -- phone, tablet or computer. It can be viewed while waiting in line, on the couch or during commutes or travel -- even offline.
Pocket is available today for free in the App Store at www.getpocket.com/ios, on Google Play (formerly the Android Marketplace) at www.getpocket.com/android, and for Kindle Fire at www.getpocket.com/kindlefire.
"Nearly five items every second are saved to Pocket from the web and popular news apps, including videos, articles, recipes and more," said Nate Weiner, founder of Read it Later and creator of Pocket.  "Pocket is the perfect name for our latest version as it expresses how simple it is to take any content users discover with them, no matter where they go."
Pocket is different than "bookmarking," apps, which organize links for long term storage. Instead, Pocket lets users save the content they discover on the web or inside any of over 300 leading apps--including Flipboard, Twitter, Pulse, and Zite--with a single tap and view it on any device.
Since its launch in 2007, over 200 million items have been saved, giving the company deep insight into how and when consumers save and view their web content.
Key findings include:
• 33 percent of saved items come from 3rd party apps including Twitter, Zite, Flipboard and Pulse.
• 50 percent of items saved via Pocket are viewed on mobile screens (up from 34 percent in January).
• Web consumption peaks in the early morning and declines through the day, as consumers dig through their inboxes and find what they want to view later. iPad use peaks at night, as users view saved content in the pre-bedtime hours. Mobile consumption maps to commuting times, as users increasingly view content in transit.
• 40 percent of items saved are not articles; popular content include videos, images, things to buy, travel tips and recipes.
• YouTube is the apps' most popular source of content, as users increasingly are saving videos for later viewing.
The new Pocket update is focused on making the most important parts of the user experience as easy and simple as possible. It enhances all the features users already loved in Read it Later in a beautiful new interface.
• A Cleaner, Simpler UI. The new user interface of Pocket displays all of a user's content in a beautiful, easy-to-view layout adapted to take full advantage of high definition displays.
• Video & Image Filters. Most people save sites with videos and images, in addition to articles and text. Pocket automatically filters all content so users can quickly switch between articles, videos and images with just a tap.
• Enhanced Viewing Experience. Articles, videos and anything saved is displayed in a clean and simplified view with fewer toolbars and a redesigned full-screen mode.
• Easier to Organize. New bulk editing, favoriting and tagging modes make organizing and browsing saved items easier. Users can find content by keywords, publications or create their own custom tags.
• Favorites. Users can star favorite content so it is always available when they want to find it.
• Pocket is Free on All Major Mobile Platforms. Pocket is now available, for free, on all major mobile platforms including Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Amazon Kindle Fire.

New details on Google Drive leaked, nothing spectacular

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 02:20 PM PDT

We've heard whispers here and there about Google's cloud storage service, codenamed Google Drive. According to a recent leak, Drive may launch as soon as next week. Being Google, we expected to hear about some fantastic features in this leak. Sadly, all we know at this point is that the service will be similar to Dropbox, where users can save files to the cloud, and access them on a PC, smartphone, or tablet. Reportedly, Drive users will get 5GB of free storage, and of course the ability to purchase more at any time. Just like Dropbox, Google Drive will function as a folder on a PC or Mac.

Other than that, there's not much else that's known about the device. The screenshot above doesn't really give any new information, either. The leaked info, which doesn't actually give any new info, points to an April 24th launch, so we'll probably just have to wait for more on Google's latest venture.

HTC Golf press shot leaked, the name still doesn’t fit

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 01:50 PM PDT

HTC made a blast at MWC by launching their new HTC One smartphone series. The line featured amazing devices like the HTC One X, One S and One V, and all of them come with some mouth-watering specs. It seems that HTC is planning to add another device to their 'One' series, one that might be launched as a successor to the HTC Wildfire and will be known simply as the HTC Golf.

As you can see from the leaked press shot above, the device resembles the One X, and actually looks like its long lost little brother. Under the hood, the Golf will reportedly launch with  a single-core processor, a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Rumors also point to a 5MP camera, a front-facing shooter, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi. Obviously it'll launch with Sense 4, which includes the Beats Audio integration that HTC boasted at MWC, along with that 25GB of free Dropbox storage, like the other One Series devices.

The Golf seems like a nice device, but unless HTC plans to market the device to Tiger Woods, we're not sure if the name is entirely fitting. With that being said, we want to know what you would name this device. Sound off in the comments below!

Verizon brings on the $30 upgrade fee

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Those on the Big Red Network may want to cash in your upgrades soon if you can. On April 22nd, Verizon is upping its upgrade fee to $30 to help them "continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever." Whew, what a mouthful. Now while I'm sure this will frustrate subscribers, particularly those that have been with them long term, this is right in line with what the other major carriers have done. Actually we can shoot some kudos Verizon's way for being the last to up the upgrade pricing.

Verizon users, sound off. Is this going to change your upgrade plans? Will this push you to consider other wireless options? Let us know in the comments!
