Chrome for Android to shed beta tag in matter of weeks

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 02:12 PM PDT

Since its release earlier in the year, Chrome for Android has become my favorite mobile browser.  I simply love the experience on the Galaxy Nexus and would love to see it on some of my other devices.  According to Sundar Pichai, SVP of Chrome and Apps, we may be seeing this happen in short order.  Speaking in an interview yesterday, the Google head indicated that they are currently running a beta 2 and trying to shore up any pesky bugs.

We launched beta 2. We addressed a few things," Pichai said. "Mainly right now, I'm driven by bug quality and stability. We are triaging, tracking, and trying to make it very stable. It is in a matter of weeks."

Sounds to us like we may hear of an official Chrome announcement right around Google IO in June.

Feedback!

Are you interested in the browser for your Android smartphone or tablet?  What browsers are you using today and what do you like most about them?

T-Mobile offering $50–$200 guaranteed trade-in credit toward 4G handset

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 01:54 PM PDT

T-Mobile today announced a new "Magenta Deal Days" promotion which looks to lure consumers away from their current carrier. Effective April 25th through May 8th, T-Mobile will give customers a guaranteed trade-in value of $50–$200 when they exchange their old working handset for a new, 4G smartphone.

We're guessing here, but it's probably no coincidence that the campaign kicks off the same day that T-Mobile starts offering their HTC One S.  We checked the fine print and see that the carrier gives preferential treatment to iPhone users.  You can kick the tires a bit and see what your phone might yield; A working EVO 4G is worth $50 whereas a Droid Razr Maxx could net $275 on trade-in.

Eligible smartphones are iPhone, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian 9.0+, and Android devices only. New activation of qualifying plan on two-year contract and purchase of a qualifying T-Mobile device required. To receive funds, you must mail in the trade-in handset, trade-in voucher, and proof of purchase (copy of UPC and receipt) within 30 days of date of purchase. Prepaid debit card will be mailed within 60 days from receipt of both trade-in handset and required paperwork.

For more information, check out T-Mobile's dedicated website.

Spring Cleaning Can Pay Off at T-Mobile When Customers Purge Their Old Phone and Step Up To a New Smartphone Running on America's Largest 4G Network

From April 25 to May 8, T-Mobile's "Magenta Deal Days" is back, offering customers a $50–$200 guaranteed credit when trading in an old cellphone for a super-fast 4G smartphone

BELLEVUE, Wash. — April 24, 2012 — Cleaning out your tech closet to trade in an old phone for a trade up to a super-fast 4G smartphone has never been easier or more affordable than during T-Mobile's new "Magenta Deal Days" promotion. Customers have the opportunity to receive a guaranteed trade-in value of $50–$200 when they exchange their old working phone and upgrade to a new, super-fast T-Mobile 4G smartphone. The two-week sale will take place from Wednesday, April 25, through Tuesday, May 8.

The "Magenta Deal Days" trade-in offer allows customers to receive a guaranteed value toward any T-Mobile 4G smartphone, including the Samsung Galaxy S II, the HTC Radar ™ 4G and the hot new HTC One S powered by Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and equipped with a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED screen, an 8-megapixel camera with "Pure Capture," DLNA and Beats Audio integration.1

"T-Mobile continues to make getting a great 4G smartphone easy with our latest 'Magenta Deal Days' promotion," said John Clelland, senior vice president of marketing, T-Mobile USA. "No matter how old their phone, and even if it's valued less, T-Mobile will offer customers a guaranteed minimum trade-in value so they can get rid of those old devices gathering dust and move up to a newer, faster T-Mobile 4G smartphone."

After years of rumors Google Drive becomes reality

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 11:16 AM PDT

Google today announced their next initiative, Google Drive, and in the process put to bed one of the internet's long held rumors.  In a post from Sundar Pichai, SVP, Chrome & Apps, we learn that Google Docs has evolved to become Google Drive and that everyone gets 5GB of storage to start.

Much like Google Docs already provides, Drive will give users cloud-hosted storage with access to images, PDF's, videos, and other files.  Similarly, if you want to share content or access, the process is the same as before.  And, thanks to the power of Google, there's a universal search built-in which even recognizes OCR from scanned documents.

Features of Google Drive, as outlined by Google:

  • Create and collaborate. Google Docs is built right into Google Drive, so you can work with others in real time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Once you choose to share content with others, you can add and reply to comments on anything (PDF, image, video file, etc.) and receive notifications when other people comment on shared items.
  • Store everything safely and access it anywhere (especially while on the go). All your stuff is just... there. You can access your stuff from anywhere—on the web, in your home, at the office, while running errands and from all of your devices.
  • Search everything. Search by keyword and filter by file type, owner and more. Drive can even recognize text in scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This technology is still in its early stages, and we expect it to get better over time.

What happens if you need more than 5GB of storage?  Google is providing a number of larger options, each with its respective pricing.  For only $2.49/month, users can upgrade to 25GB of storage, or five times the free bucket.  Need even more?  Why not pick up 100GB of storage at $4.99/month or go all out with 1TB of storage for $49.99/month.  Whatever storage option you upgrade to, Google will bump your Gmail account up to 25GB of storage in the process!

GSM Galaxy Nexus now available through Play Store, off contract

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 08:36 AM PDT

Are you the type that hates middle-men? Despise the shackles of contracts and carrier obligations? Lastly and most importantly, have you been looking to grab up the Galaxy Nexus? Google has started selling the device via its Play Store for the surprising price of $399 for US residents. Considering this is non-subsidized pricing with no contract, it's definitely cheaper than one would expect. Obviously you won't be able to use it with either Verizon, Sprint, or any other CDMA network, but if you were looking to just pick it up and pop in a GSM SIM card, now's your chance (after the 1 to 2 day business days shipping, of course). Click the source link below to buyBUYBUY and let us know in the comments what you think.

Samsung releases list of US devices to receive ICS

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 08:17 AM PDT

The house of Samsung has been busy with ICS, between preparing to release the software for a multitude of devices and actually releasing it for some lucky users. While updates are brewing for some devices that haven't gotten them, Samsung has released a list reiterating which devices are in fact getting the update, perhaps to reassure those that are becoming impatient. There's not really anything new here, with the Galaxy S 2 devices and newer Tabs set to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness and older devices relegated to stale Gingerbread (really not all that bad a thing). Oddly, there's nothing specific for T-Mobile devices, with the only information being "We are in close communication with T-Mobile to ensure that eligible devices are upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming months and will provide updates as we have additional details to share." Beyond that, while it's information we've heard before, it's good to hear continued official word coming down from the horse's mouth.

Looking forward to ICS love? Have some already via rooting? Let us know in the comments!

Review: Verizon Motorola Droid 4

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 07:57 AM PDT

The Droid line from Motorola and Verizon has made quite a stir over the years, and has almost set itself apart from the "Android" platform. Donned with an ultra techie moniker that any Star Wars fan would be able to relate, we're  on the 4th iteration of this lineup, which is now known as the Droid 4. This model doesn't stray far from the original intention with it's powerful backbone and sturdy craftsmanship. I'll say it over and over again throughout this review, but the Droid 4 seems to be made, marketed and sold to the many business professionals on the Verizon Wireless network. Typically on sale for $199 with a new 2 year contract from Big Red, I'm going to touch on some of "what I consider" to be key points during this review.

*LTE* Wow! Many people have had a chance to experience Verizon's 4G LTE network by now, or they've heard from friends/family/co-workers how awesome it is. Unlike WiMAX, LTE will be around for much longer as we continue to see advancements in the technology. As all 4 major carriers in the US have announced plans to use LTE in the near future, we'll likely see voLTE coming in the years to come. Verizon's LTE was the first to arrive, with many reports of ~45mbit aggregate data speeds making 3G look like dial-up. Best suited for those on an unlimited data plan, LTE sure could chew up 2GB in a heartbeat. Sending and receiving documents and files at LTE speeds will be very fast, perfect for the out of office businessman.

Here in Kansas I am constantly seeing LTE speeds over 10mbit using the SpeedTest.net application from the Google Play Store. I would suggest a widget or application of sorts to help you manage the LTE radio on your device in order to maintain decent battery life. Areas without LTE could cause a drastic drain in the battery while it constantly searches for signal.

*Slide-Out Keyboard* I'll be the first to tell you, YOU DON'T NEED A HARDWARE KEYBOARD!!! However, being realistic I understand there is a market for this. With that being said, the keyboard on this thing is fairly impressive. Cell phones didn't always have 5-row physical keyboards, but this one does. The 5th row comes in handy when inputting numbers, as the "long-press" method gets tiring. They rest of the keyboard has a nice layout, all of the keys are in places they should be and they are all labeled very well.

Complete with functional arrow keys and a large spacebar, I kind of understand why someone would desire a device with a physical keyboard. The best thing a hardware keyboard gives you is the screen real estate that is often completely lost on a device with an on screen keyboard. So you can still see the entire screen while typing, which is very cool. That's the one thing, in my opinion that really shows the benefit of the slide-out devices.

My only complaint with the keyboard could be about how loud it is while typing. There is a very pronounced "bounce-back" when typing. While the feedback of the button is nice, it is also louder than expected.

*Hardware* The hardware features listed below are all on par with today's current devices. A fast dual-core processor with a ton of internal storage space make this a very capable device. As usual, I would like to see a larger capacity battery in such a large phone but the provided 1785mAh battery should get you through the workday. 8mp rear camera/1.3mp front facing camera 1785mAh battery 16GB built-in storage 1.2ghz dual-core CPU

*User Experience* It's a BRICK. MotoBlur is atrocious. The keyboard is so loud you need earplugs to save your hearing!

OK, not really. Some of that is my opinion. What's not my opinion is the Droid4 is in fact THE best phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Dual core, ample RAM, big screen and blazing fast LTE all make this a viable choice for the business professional on-the-go.

I hope I covered most of the stuff you would find important, stay tuned for more reviews in the near future.

Google Drive announcement imminent today?

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 07:22 AM PDT

There's usually an odd lack of fanfare whenever Google announces a new service. Sure, techie peeps like ourselves and our intrepid readers know what's going on, but for the most part Google just likes to quietly slip new services in with their already impressive portfolio. A good example is the mysterious Google Drive, rumors and legends of which have been floating around the internet ether. Last week we had reported on a possible release date of today, and well...today has arrived. While there has of yet been no official release, the Google Docs support page has been primed. Visitors to the page will find a new instruction regarding Google Docs transference to a user, warning them to ensure that enough space exists in their Google Drive (which you can apparently check by clicking the Upload button). With 5 Gigs of space as a rumored free starting point (and coincidentally, Google Docs users now have 5 Gigs of space available beginning today...hmm), most users problems won't find any problems with this.

Even Yahoo News has jumped into the Google Drive prep waters, apparently receiving word from an anonymous source regarding some features. Unsurprisingly, given Google's heritage, Drive will have a robust search integration, allowing the user to search through whatever notes, images, and what-have-you that they have stored, and apparently from any Web-capable device. I'm sure this would include an official Android app, which would then probably be released to other mobile app stores at a later date. According to Yahoo's source, there would also be some sort of image search voodoo for stored pictures and PDFs.

As the day progresses, of course we'll know whether or not Google Drive's unveiling will actually be today, but regardless, it does draw near. Will this be a service and tool you use, or will you stick with whatever cloud-based storage you already have? Let us know in the comments!
