Office Depot lists 8GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) at $399

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 01:42 PM PDT

Office Depot appears to be the first retail chain to offer up a price for Samsung's upcoming successor to the Galaxy Tab 10.1.  The  8GB version of the Galaxy Tab 2 is shown at $399 however the pricing may not be final just yet.  For what it's worth, the link provided by Engadget does not return any Samsung tablet results.  Perhaps this was pulled after word spread online?  Assuming that it is we're cautiously optimistic that Samsung is headed in the right direction in regards to pricing.

We've got nothing concrete to go on here but we wouldn't be surprised if the pricing ends up looking like this:

  • 8GB - $399
  • 16GB - $469
  • 32GB - $499

Verizon’s next Pantech leaked in benchmarks

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 01:11 PM PDT

If the details from a leaked benchmark prove correct, one of Verizon's next Android smartphones should be a dual-core Pantech.  Figures found on NenaMark tell us that someone has been testing a Pantech ADR910L which runs Android 4.0 and features a dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset.  The screen display is listed at 800x480 so we're not looking for an HD screen resolution however that should lead to a lower price.  Our gut tells us this will be a budget-friendly 4G LTE handset much in the tradition of the Breakout from 2011.

Facebook acquires Instagram for $1 billion

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 10:27 AM PDT

Buying a popular mobile app for $210 million isn't cool.  Know what is cool?  Buying one for $1 billion.  Such is the story today as we learn that Facebook has opened up their wallet and plucked a cool billion (cash and shares) out to purchase Instagram.  Speaking from Facebook's official blog today, we're advised that the deal should hit regulatory approval later this quarter and will be more than just a simple Facebook integration.

Based on what CEO Mark Zuckerberg tells us this afternoon, they plan to continue offering users the choices to share (or not) with other social networks as well as pulling from Instagram's experiences to incorporate into other Facebook services.

I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.
For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.
We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.
That's why we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.
We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.
These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram's experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure.
This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.
We're looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we're going to be able to build together.

LG readying its “Galaxy S III killer”, the D1L

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 09:24 AM PDT

While we're waiting for Samsung to announce their follow-up to the Galaxy S II smartphone, competitors are scrambling to create something even better.  Such is the case with LG who is said to be readying a "Galaxy S III killer" called the D1L.

According to Korean news site DDaily, the LG D1L will feature a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, a 4.7-inch 720p display, and run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  Not exactly groundbreaking stuff here considering they've already announced some high-end stuff like the Optimus 4X HD. We're curious to see what a D1L would offer that isn't flagship enough for their quad-core phone however we should find out soon. DDaily tells us that the D1L should launch in May, right about the time some of their MWC phones begin hitting the street.

RadioShack introduces Mobile Makeover Month, sell back used electronics

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 09:23 AM PDT

In the great attempt to keep up with constantly evolving technology, it's inevitable that one will build up a collection of "old" electronic bits and pieces. Especially now that phones are picking up all the tricks of our other devices like camera and MP3 players, you may have a lot of extraneous devices lying around. RadioShack has an answer for our problem with Mobile Makeover Month for their Trade & Save program. With their Trade & Save program, people can trade in all sorts of electronics for store credit to be used to get newer electronics to feed your need. With Mobile Makover Month the deal gets even sweeter: if you're upgrading to a new cellphone, you're guaranteed to get at least $30 (and up to $300) towards that new shiny something. Beyond that, RadioShack has also released an app both for iOS and Android for giving price estimates on those potential trade-ins.

Check out a video below with a rundown of the app and let us know in the comments: What sort of outdated electro-knick-knacks are you looking to get rid of?

HTC scraps plans to include beats headphones with future handsets

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 08:30 AM PDT

HTC has decided to not include Beats Audio headphones in future models of handsets, as part of an effort to boost profitability.  As the last few months have proven, consumers don't want to spend extra money to buy smartphones with Beats Audio headphones. A number of models including the HTC Sensation XE, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Rezound have come with Beats cans but none of them have been smash hits on their respective carriers.  HTC has come to the realization that most people don't want to cough up the added money for the headsets, something we feared back when they acquired stake in Beats Audio.

An accessory like the headphone doesn't factor in when someone is buying a smartphone. If they want a Beats headphone, they'll buy it directly. - Martin Fichter, HTC

Cutting the headset from SKUs will not only save consumers money in the end, but it will help HTC to eke out some extra profit margin. It should also lessen confusion for buyers who aren't aware of the differences between one model to the next.

This isn't to say that HTC is abandoning their Beats initiative and taking a $300 million bath, rather they need to employ different tactics.  Perhaps one way to help push the Beats agenda is to offer coupons or promotions with each purchase of a Beats-enabled HTC phone or tablet.  Or vice versa, giving a promo code for an HTC product with each Beats earbuds, headphones, or speaker dock that leaves the factory.
