Nvidia announces the GeForce Grid: a Kepler-based cloud gaming solution

Posted: 18 May 2012 02:04 AM PDT

gfgrid-header

Although many are still refusing to believe it before they experience it first-hand, cloud gaming is upon us.

OnLive, the pioneer of this innovative sector, is the one of the few companies to offer this type of service right now, but as it turns out, there are other companies — some unarguably better positioned in the gaming industry — that were intrigued and inspired by OnLive's success. In case you're wondering exactly how intrigued, it suffices to say that in the last quarter of 2011, OnLive claimed to be serving "tens of millions" of users in the US and the UK.

While it’s unlikely that Nvidia will launch its own cloud based gaming service, the Santa Clara-based giant is very interested in providing cloud gaming companies with the infrastructure required. They will do so using the GeForce Grid: a complete gaming solution based on the new Nvidia Kepler GPUs. Each server will be able to accommodate up to four players, thanks to its four Nvidia Kepler GPUs, apparently a configuration that will make full use of the new encoder and virtualization technology featured inside the new Kepler architecture.

Nvidia's blog post that details the GeForce Grid tries to emphasize that, using GeForce Grid, you will enjoy cloud gaming on your PC, but also, on any kind of device with a display: tablet, smartphone, or TV. I'm sure that NVIDIA will optimize the GeForce Grid for its future Tegra SoCs. It would really seem a waste of resources not to, as their marketing pitch will suddenly become bulletproof.

The same blog post also (unsurprisingly) takes a jab at OnLive, claiming that the "first generation of cloud gaming" services work at a latency of 280ms. The GeForce Grid actually seems to be so powerful that the latency will be lower than the 160ms of the console + TV combination, but not by much.

Catch the Nvidia chart below, but please note that while the Kepler architecture will perform its capture/encode task like clockwork, the Game Pipeline and Network Latency sector don't always work in the parameters that Nvidia have presented them.

gfgrid-latency-chart

Nvidia is apparently basing its optimistic timetable on a couple of factors that they cannot control. For starters, the Game Pipeline sector will only fit in the 50ms estimation if games will be specially optimized for the GeForce Grid and the combination of four Kepler GPUs per server. I'm willing to bet that most major game developers are going to walk that path in about five years or so, but an initial transitional period is bound to exist, and for a while, many games will not be optimized for cloud gaming.

The second factor that Nvidia cannot control is how fast the network works. While Internet speeds are constantly on the rise (a minor exception in the last quarter of 2011), nobody can claim that all Internet networks will be fast enough for cloud gaming.

Drawbacks left aside, Nvidia's GeForce Grid is living proof that cloud gaming is the way of the future. And it makes a lot of sense: why do all the tasks on a local machine, when you can use huge clouds for processing, and reap the benefits with just a basic Internet connection? Not to mention that piracy, the biggest threat to developers, basically goes out the window with cloud gaming?

Nvidia announced that they will deploy the first GeForce Grid implementation together with the cloud gaming company Gaikai and the virtualization expert Citrix.

My subjective opinion is that Sony and Microsoft will definitely want in on the cloud gaming market, if it keeps growing like it has for the past few years. Some go as far as to say that the fifth generation PlayStation and the third generation Xbox will do all the rendering in the cloud (just imagine the low price of such a console!), but so much can happen til then.

What are your thoughts on cloud gaming? Will it take off at a worldwide level or will it be a niche sector? Drop us a line in the comment section below and tell us what you think!

Best Android apps for soccer and football fans

Posted: 17 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Football and soccer sure are famous all around the globe. If you talk about these two games, nothing can make them more exciting than the cheers of the crowd. And, when the crowd goes wild, things can get ugly. Fans will do anything for their team, but things like high ticket price, fully booked stadium, or how far the game venue is could hinder that supportive team spirit.

Thanks to some Android apps, soccer and football fans can now be updated with their favorite teams and even play with their own teams in a virtual game. Here’s a list of the best Android apps for soccer and football fans.

Soccer Scores – FotMob

Soccer Scores – FotMob provides you with all the game details such as team lineups, goals, cards, penalties, assists, missed penalties, substitutions and other statistics of the game. Statistics-wise, using this app is actually better than watching the game on the field or on television.

Aside from the aforementioned features of the app, Soccer Scores – FotMob has a few more. The app keeps you abreast on all the things happening outside the playing field. Here's one clever little application that will fire up your social-media sharing obsession. Seedair +3 is relatively a new location-based media service specifically made for mobile tech junkies. Seedair +3 is basically a sharing application that lets you geo-tag photos, share ideas, thoughts, and emotions to other app users near your vicinity.

But, before you head out and share your emotions on the air, you need to have a Seedair +3 account to get you started. Creating a new account is absolutely free of charge and can be created when you launch the app.

After logging in your credentials, you’ll be greeted with the app's homescreen. Seedair +3 will automatically track your current location via GPS and prompt you to select your visibility status for anyone to see.

On the app's main menu, you are presented with five different options to begin your day with Seedair +3. If you want to share important stuff, all you need to do is tap the Create Airsign option. Here, you can compose messages and attach media related to your message. Basically, Airsigns are just the same as posting Facebook updates but with an innovative twist.

To share, just hit Publish to begin sharing your Airsign with other Seedair +3 users near your location. A bubble message icon will show up on Google Maps informing other Seedair +3 users of the important updates or happenings in that area. You can also browse any part of the map to explore areas where other users have left Airsigns.

On the other hand, tapping the Mainpinwall on the app's homescreen will list all the activities on the Seedair +3 network in chronological fashion. Here, you can check all the likes and comments that you have received from all of your posted Airsigns. You can also jump to other Seedair +3 user profiles by simply tapping the button found on the top-right of the screen.

Users can filter messages, photos, and other starred content by selecting the Tubeview icon on the app's main interface. Seedair +3 keeps a list of personal messages and notifications via the Mailbox icon found on the app's main homescreen.

Similar to Facebook, Seedair+3 lets you befriend other Seedair+3 users and explore the content that they have geo-tagged and shared over the air. You can also send friend requests to other users and expand your circle of friends to stay connected.

Overall, Seedair +3 is still in its early stages, slowly growing and reaching out to social-media people from around the world. The only downside of the app is the few users it has in its database, making it hard to find people who are also using this service.

Seedair +3 is an innovative geo-tagging social media app that will surely feed you with detailed information and updates from your close friends, not to mention knowing the exact location where an event is happening. Seedair +3 is absolutely free to download from the Google Play Store.

The latest Evernote app, now on version 4.0, comes with a brand-spanking new look and features. HTC Ville C leaked specs show up, peculiarly similar to HTC One S

Posted: 17 May 2012 07:44 AM PDT

Cheer up, Desire C, it looks like you won't be the only C device in HTC's growing list of smartphones, despite the manufacturer's pledge to release fewer devices this year.

A leaked screenshot of the HTC Ville C has been unearthed by the folks at BriefMobile, but not of the phone – just the specs. According to their source, the HTC Ville C will be offered as a more affordable alternative to the HTC One S. Let's check out what the HTC Ville C supposedly has under its casing.

Starting from the exterior, the HTC Ville C is expected to be another ultra slim phone, but at this point, we can't tell if it's going to be as gorgeously thin as the HTC One S. From the picture, it appears the phone will be powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 S3 processor. But don't get too excited just yet, because this was apparently a mistype and the actual speed is clocked at 1.2GHz. As for other specs, the HTC Ville C will come with a 4.3-inch qHD AMOLED screen, 16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, 8MP rear camera, VGA front camera, and 1,650mAh battery.

Unsurprisingly, the HTC Ville C will get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The surprising part is seeing HTC Sense 4.5 being listed there. If it's right on the money, we may see HTC rolling out the 4.5 UI overlay to its trio of flagship models before we see the HTC Ville C being released. Except for the S3 processor, the specs we're seeing of the HTC Ville C now are very similar to HTC One S. Hopefully some pictures of the HTC Ville C will leak in the coming days to see how much resemblance it'll have to the One S.

Are you digging the specs of the HTC Ville C so far, especially if it'll be offered cheaper than the HTC One S?

ICS coming to Sony Xperia S in late May or early June

Posted: 17 May 2012 07:39 AM PDT

For all the things that Sony has got right in the last few months, shipping its flagship phone, the Sony Xperia S, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread when the calendar clearly said that we're in 2012 probably wasn't one of them. For what it's worth, the company promised an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on the horizon.

Sony last posted on its blog that the ICS update for Xperia S phone will be rolled out in the latter part of Q2, but it appears things are running so smoothly that owners of the Xperia S will get to see it a bit sooner. According to posts on Sony's support forum, the upgrade to ICS will come as early as this month.

The announcement was made by an official support staff who stated that the company is on track to release ICS for Xperia S around late May or early June, which effectively quashed any rumors about ICS won't be arriving until July or later. But, of course, like other devices, the rolling out of the update will depend on your location and carrier. So it's best not to get too upset if you don't see the promised ICS update on your Xperia S phone on the due date.

Other Xperia phones, namely the Xperia Arc s and Xperia Neo V have been enjoying their Ice Cream Sandwich treat for quite some time now. With Sony making a promise that no Xperia device from 2011 will get left out from the ICS update, this will certainly help keep Sony's loyal users from turning away from the Japanese phone maker, especially with some new handsets expected to come soon.

We'll keep you updated on the impending ICS arrival on Sony Xperia S. Feel free to share any information you may have on the update in the comments below.

If you're familiar with Carly Foulkes, T-Mobile's spokeswoman that has appeared in the carrier's ads since 2010, but you haven't watched the news lately, you might be in for a real shocker today.

"The cute girl in the pink dress" is now Bad Girl Carly and two recent ads promoting T-Mobile's HTC One S are set to raise your blood pressure significantly in a matter of seconds. While the One S should have been the star of the new TV commercials, T-Mobile has risked a bit, attracting all male eyes on Carly, who is rocking a leather suit on an even sexier Ducati motorcycle.

We have a smoking hot young woman in a leather suit, a fantastic black-and-pink Ducati, and these ads are part of a campaign promoting a phone? I know, it might sound weird, but if you think about it, it's quite smart. Both videos have the potential to become viral and to attract very large audiences, which should be the number one target of any advertising campaign. And even though not everyone will remember the ads as promoting T-Mobile and HTC's One S, at least for some that might stick.

The first of the two ads, called "See It Again" (released a while ago), uses an advertising technique that I for one usually find cheap. T-Mobile's HTC One S is compared with AT&T's iPhone 4S, which is uncool from two reasons. First of all, I think that if you have a good enough product that you really trust, you should be able to promote it without attacking your competitors. Secondly and more importantly, I feel that T-Mo is taking a cheap shot at the iPhone 4S, which overall is a much better phone than the HTC One S, but that has some issues with connectivity speeds.

That being said, the actual commercial is not at all bad and you can see that it has cost T-Mobile some dough. I like the idea of the replay, showing exactly how faster is T-Mo's One S in comparison with AT&T's iPhone, and I loooove Carly's cheeky smile and the way she "peaces out" the dude on the blue motorcycle.

The second ad, called "Fast Songs", is not as controversial as "See It Again", and only concentrates on a couple of the One S's strong points, but then again it’s clearly less creative than the first commercial. Sexy Carly is showing off the phone's Google Play Music capabilities before running off into the night on her snazzy bike.

All in all, this ad might actually do its job better than the first one, even though it won't be as debated, as it shows off the HTC One S more. There's also more Carly for us, so what's there not to like?

What do you guys think of T-Mobile's new ad campaign? Do you like the commercials? Do you like Carly better as a bad girl than as a cute girl in a pink dress?

Mysterious Samsung “T699″ phone heading to T-Mobile, could it be the Galaxy Nexus?

Posted: 17 May 2012 07:25 AM PDT

Aside from launching a controversial but exciting advertising campaign for the HTC One S, T-Mobile is reportedly making efforts to strengthen its smartphone line-up, in an attempt to get back in contention with the "big guys".

T-Mo hasn't done a very good job at picking up "hero" devices lately, the Galaxy S2 being pretty much the most noteworthy exception to that rule. A freshly leaked User Agent Profile hints at a new device coming to T-Mobile in the near future, and, while it might not be a "super phone", it could actually turn things around a bit for the carrier.

Codenamed SGH-T699, the future Samsung handheld is shrouded in mystery, with the only technical detail known about it being the display it will sport. Yes, it will come with a 1280 x 720 pix res screen, which is on-par with what all of today's high-end phones feature, including the Galaxy S3.

Before getting overly excited and start assuming that this will in fact be the Galaxy S3, we should tell you that we are almost certain it won't be Sammy's new flagship. That's because the Galaxy Note is codenamed T879, according to TmoNews sources, and a T699 code means that the phone will be more modestly equipped than the "phablet".

We can also assume from the leaked document that the future Samsung phone will be powered by an ARM11 CPU, which unfortunately doesn't tell us a whole lot. However, we already have a pretty good idea of what this T699 might be. Considering its display and the fact that it will probably be a device that fits into the space between mid-rangers and high-tech, it’s most likely that T-Mobile will finally receive its own Galaxy Nexus.

Whether that's good or bad news it’s pretty difficult to tell right now, considering that the Nexus is still a very popular device in the Android world, but also that it was released way back in November 2011 in Europe, and in December in the US via Verizon.

There's also a possibility that the T699 is not the Galaxy Nexus, so, for the time being, you should not put all your eggs in this one basket and wait to hear more on the subject. We should find out exactly what the T699 is in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on our website!

Google backtracks on Google Play Music authorization limits

Posted: 17 May 2012 07:15 AM PDT

A statement that is repeated often by Android loyalists is that one of the best features about Google’s mobile OS is its open-source nature. This allows you to tweak, customize, and, with the right technical know-how, create completely new custom ROMs for your device. Of course, not everyone can do this, but thanks to a few developers, we all have access to some truly amazing customizations such as CyanogenMod and AOKP.

Granted, rooting and flashing a custom ROM has a small amount of risk attached, with the chance that something going wrong will leave you with a very expensive paperweight. Flashing also voids your warranty, which proves that manufacturers aren’t entirely supportive of such activities.

Unfortunately, it seems that Google has also been working quietly behind the scenes to discourage rooting and flashing devices. At least, when it comes to its cloud music storage app, Google Play Music.

First, some background on the issue that became prevalent yesterday:

  • You can register multiple devices to access Google Play Music, i.e., I have an Android phone as well as tablet, and both devices are linked to one Play Music account. Flashing a device means that even though you are using the same phone or tablet, you need to register each ROM as a new device.
  • Since there is a upper limit to how many devices can be registered at the same time, users who flash their devices often are required to de-authorize “old” registrations if they want to add new devices. You can only have a maximum of 10 devices registered at the same time.
  • It seems that over the last 60 days, Google has been making some policy changes that limits the total number of de-authorizations allowed. Some reports suggest that this limit is 4 per year.
  • This limitation is a huge problem for users that keep flashing custom ROMs on their device, because as soon as they hit the limit, they will not be able to de-authorize any past devices. A report over at XDA-developers says that you might be able to de-authorize devices after hitting the limit, by e-mail Google support, but this is unconfirmed as of now.
  • The only confirmed way to work around this issue is either to create a new account and re-upload all your music, or restoring a backup from a previous ROM.

A lot of users, primarily those who are a part of the “flashaholic” community, expressed their anger and disappointment at this issue, eliciting the following response from Google, found on their Google Play support page.

“Yesterday we made a change to our device policy for music on Google Play.  Any user can associate up to 10 devices to his or her account.  Once you have connected 10 devices, you may add a new device only by deauthorizing an existing one from your account, and you may do this up to four times per year.

We limit the number of times you can swap out new devices at the request of some of our music partners in an effort to limit abuse. We understand this has caused some issues for users who often deauthorize and reauthorize the same device, and we are currently re-implementing the solution in a way that works for our users and music partners.

We apologize for any inconvenience and will update this page as new changes are made.”

It looks like any de-authorization limit has been removed for now. I would recommend doing so for all your old devices and ROMs soon, before any limits or restrictions are re-applied. I am very impressed with Google’s rapid response to the issue, and they will hopefully be able to come up with an appropriate solution to keep everyone happy.
