CyanogenMod v7 not forgotten, may get weekly builds instead of nightly builds

Posted: 09 May 2012 09:10 AM PDT

Again, no real need for introduction of CyanogenMod is required. Nearly 2 million unique installs should tell the tale. The largest series of custom ROM's for various Android devices released a status update of its super popular CM7.

Our buddy ciwrl issued a statement about ongoing development for v7, making it sound like it will be around for a while still. With CM9 in full dev mode, it's wonderful to see v7 isn't going to die just yet. He goes on to say

The 7.x branch of CyanogenMod will stay open, available, and active beyond 7.2. We may switch to a more weekly drop of the infamous nightlies at some point, but they will continue as well.

Users with older hardware should be quite pleased to see this update, and if you would like to continue seeing further development it's probably a good idea to DONATE to the team. Full blog report below if you wish to read it straight from the horses mouth.

It's been nearly two months since we released the initial 7.2 RC1. Since then, the team has been working hard to identify and fix the issues reported to the bug tracker. We are nearing our release of CyanogenMod 7.2, based on Android 2.3.7 and will be releasing…….soon! You didn't think you were getting an ETA did you?

Users may notice that some devices that received RC1 will not be graduated to a stable release. This is due to bugs we consider as showstoppers, but we feel there is no reason to hold up working devices for a few stragglers. The stragglers are not dropped, but will play catch-up to receive a 7.2-stable release.

What's Next?

Many people have wondered what will become of CyanogenMod 7 now that Ice Cream Sandwich work has begun, and likewise, what happens to all the devices that won't make it to CyanogenMod 9. We aren't just leaving you behind.

The 7.x branch of CyanogenMod will stay open, available, and active beyond 7.2. We may switch to a more weekly drop of the infamous nightlies at some point, but they will continue as well.

In addition to that good news, we have a slew of new devices being merged into mainline thanks in part to our developer relations initiative and the greater Android community.

After CyanogenMod 7.2 is released, we will be merging in and welcoming aboard maintainers for the following devices (with more queued):

  • HTC Status (chacha)
  • HTC Wildfire S (marvel)
  • LG Optimus Chic (e720)
  • Motorola Photon (sunfire)
  • Samsung Galaxy 5 (i5500)

Kyocera officially introduces Kyocera Hydro and Rise

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:38 AM PDT

Kyocera is a brand trying their best to somehow make a strong place in the smartphone market, like Samsung or Huawei, but they are still trying their very best. They brought the Kyocera Echo, a dual-screen phone to Sprint, which was actually not a success. Anyway, today at the CTIA, Kyocera officially launched two new smartphones, the Kyocera Hydro and the Kyocera Rise.

Well, you don't need to be surprised because both devices are for people looking for a mid-range Android devices with good features, they are not here to compete with the mighty SGSIII or One X. Talking about the Hydro, it comes with a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM, and it's running on Android 4.0, which is somehow a good news. The device is designed to be water resistant, so daily life spills and drops of water wouldn't hurt it.

On the other hand, Kyocera Rise comes with a QWERTY-4 row keyboard and that's the only reason to pick it over Hydro, because everything else is same. Complete list of specs after the break:

  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor (MSM8655)
  • 512MB RAM
  • 3.5" HVGA 480x320 IPS LCD display
  • 2GB ROM
  • micro SD card support
  • 3.2 megapixel camera w/ LED flash
  • EV-DO Rev A and 1X Advanced
  • WiFi (b/g/n)
  • Bluetooth (2.1 + EDR)

I don't know what Kyocera was thinking, but I am sure they didn't have a 'high-end' device in their mind. Anyway, who's planning to pick this device? Anyone?

Sprint Guardian brings Mobile Security and Safety Applications to Sprint

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:37 AM PDT

Sprint is one of the major networks in USA and every network wants to provide their customers the best support and offers, and Sprint is off to a really great start. With a line of good smartphones, Sprint is now bringing a new smartphone bundle for their customers. It's known as Sprint Guardian, and the tool brings security and safety to the users. It's a useful tool for parents who want to keep their teenage kid's devices in-control to see what they are doing, anti-malware tools, and remote tracking of lost or stolen handsets.

The application is actually divided into two parts, safety and lookout, and both are available in premium versions or sign-up  for only one. One of the great features is that the application will allow Sprint customers to protect up to five lines with a lot of services, like tracking lost phones and locking phones when driving etc. Check out the video below for all the details:

Download Video: MP4

Sprint will launch this service in Summer 2012, where it will cost $14.98 per month if you want the whole package, or you can go for $9.99 per month for Safely, $4.99 per month for Lookout Family, or $49.99 per year for Lookout Family. I am really impressed by this amazing application and I hope to see such offerings from other major mobile networks as well. People, don't forget to share your thoughts about the app in the comment box below.

Stick It! Sorry Samsung, your Pop-up Play is not ground breaking we are already doing it

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:28 AM PDT

Wah Wah Wah... Samsung your already un-impressive performance at the "Next Galaxy" event earlier this month has been proved even less impressive.

If you are unsure of what i'm referring to, last week Samsung introduced their latest super phone the Galaxy SIII and showcased many of it's "ground breaking" new features. Well these new features, in my opinion, were less than ground breaking software addons. One of these was the "pop-up play" which allowed the user to take  a youtube video and break it apart into smaller, movable window for better multi-tasking. Kind of like the screenshots below.

Protip for Samsung: Look both ways before you cross the street.

Well what happens when an already available app gets showcased at a major press event? Sales go up 600%!!!

Download Video: MP4

More details below, but if you're already wanting to shove it in Samsung's face head over to the Google Play Store and grab Stick It! for $1.49

You might be surprised to know, however, that an almost identical app is already on sale on the Google Play store, and it works on any recent Android phone. It's called Stick It!, and the developer behind it has seen a staggering sevenfold sales boost since the announcement last week.

It may not be baked into the OS, but for £1.19, Stick It! does a remarkable job of emulating Pop-up Play: when you start playing a clip, you can immediately turn it into a floating window you can place anywhere on your screen, so you can carry on watching while you browse the web or chat.

It works on any Android 2.2 or up phone, supports a variety of video formats as well as YouTube clips, and best of all, it doesn't need a quad-core to run: we've found it runs just fine on single-core Android phones. Really though, it comes into its own on a tablet-sized screen.

The app was developed by Cerrato Renaud, a French RFID (Radio-frequency identification) engineer from Aix en Provence near Marseilles. He's dabbled in Android developing over the last year, releasing several apps on the Google Play store, including Video Catcher – an app for ripping internet videos – and Got Ya! Face Trap!, which silently takes pictures with your phone's front camera in case of theft.

Flipboard Arrives on Android…Finally. #parity

Posted: 09 May 2012 05:14 AM PDT

I awoke to the news in my Google Reader that the APK for Flipboard had escaped from the recently announced Samsung Galaxy 3.  This app with the long-ago released Netflix were the only ones that still made me long for iOS.  But no more!

After loading up my Flipboard this morning on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus and my Motorola XOOM with the prerequisite Twitter and Tumblr accounts, and other news feeds, all is well.  After downloading, it has no noticeable UI difference from the iOS version so it looks as if Flipboard might have just done a straight port for Version 1.0.  If you are up to it, it can be downloaded from the XDA forums or via the QR code below.
