AT&T Points The Finger At Google When Asked About Timely Android Updates

Posted: 09 May 2012 04:56 PM PDT

When AT&T was asked why the carrier took so long to respond to Android updates on their smartphones, CEO Randall Stephenson responded with “Google determines what platform gets the newest releases and when. A lot of times, that’s a negotiated arrangement and that’s something we work at hard.”  This seems to imply that Google had the bigger hand as far as when a current update is pushed to devices.  Naturally, this caused the search giant to be somewhat confused.  And while we could naturally see why an update might take some time to reach carrier devices with different technologies, skins and other variables, we’re thinking AT&T is  just looking to pass the buck here.  With expected confusion, Google’s spokesperson responded with the following:

“frankly we don’t understand what he is referring to”

So, it doesn’t appear that the answer was ultimately answered here but rather deflected and passed on to Google’s court.  We’ll see if someone from AT&T’s camp can clear the matter up for us and get the ball rolling on some of these devices still running Froyo.

The HTC One V is the more mid-level device of the One Series. It has a 3.7-inch (800 x 480) display, a 1.0 GHZ processor,  1GB of RAM, and a 5MP rear camera. It still packs all the same great camera features like its older siblings, the One X and One S, and of course Sense 4.0 and Ice Cream Sandwich. Instagram for Android updated with tilt-shift feature

Posted: 09 May 2012 01:52 PM PDT

Instagram may be on the verge of a billion dollar takeover from Facebook but thankfully the pending deal isn’t standing in the way of progress. The in-house developers have been hard at work updating the Android application in order to bring a few extra features that were missing at launch and, most importantly, bringing it up to date with the iOS counterpart. Tilt-shift, a feature that allows the photographer to adjust focus and add a blur effect to their shots was available on iOS from day one so it was a notable absence from Android version 1.0. It’s great to see that it has finally arrived on Android.

If you’re a would-be photographer just itching to get your creative juices flowing, you’d better hit the link below to grab the download.

Sony & Google Team Up To Show Off New Google TV Box In Palo Alto

Posted: 09 May 2012 01:07 PM PDT

While Google continues to own the mobile platform, it’s not so hot in the realm of television services. That’s why it is starting over from scratch and re-designing the Google TV platform from the ground up by working on the evolution of Google TV. To help usher in the new line of Google TV devices, Google has partnered with Sony to create an informal event which was held in Palo Alto, California. The event was aimed at introducing the new generation of Google TV in the body of Sony Google TV products. The highlight of the day was Sony reps introducing a non-working prototype of the set-top box and a new generation remote as well. It looks as if Sony (and Google) were looking at evolving the look of Google TV devices, so they started by keeping the actual set-top box simple, yet adding a sleek appearance with a black finish in its design. The remote on the other hand is a tad bigger and features two faces: one side has the keyboard, while the other features a trackpad along with the standard remote buttons.

Google and Sony are staying mum by withholding any additional details for the future Google TV devices or sharing when it will be released. As of now, we have no information about pricing and we don’t know about a potential release date. So the recent event was more of a quick tease and heads up on the direction of both Sony and Google TV… which does look promising indeed I might add.

Make sure you hit the break to see a better glimpse of both the box and the remote.

Hands on with Tech21 Impactology Cases and the orange goop that makes them so tough

Posted: 09 May 2012 12:40 PM PDT

I have to be honest folks. I never use cases on my any of my phones or tablets. It’s not that I never drop them, I just hate the bulk so I take my chances. I do have to say that after seeing this demo with Tech21, this is the case for me. It simply is the toughest case around. I actually met with them last night at CTIA, but it was so loud that I decided to set up a private meeting this morning so I could get a proper demo. These cases are the only ones in the world that have impact fabric in them. What is that impact fabric? It’s an orange goop-like substance that’s called D3O. It’s a little bit like Play Doh, but a lot tougher. Trust me. You will see CEO Jason Roberts try to injure his finger with a mallet. Will D30 protect him?

Check out the hands on after the break.

All T-Mobile cases have this technology in them and look forward to more retailers soon. They are  also working on a waterproof case as well.

Hands on with iOnRoad, Turn your smartphone into a your personal driving assistant

Posted: 09 May 2012 12:22 PM PDT

I sat down with the folks at iOnRoad this morning at CTIA. They have a really unique app for your car, and they say it’s your personal driving assistant. When it comes to driving, safety is the most important aspect so why not use your smartphone to help you out? With iOnRoad you will get:

FORWARD COLLISION WARNING
Mount your device and iOnRoad will recognize traffic ahead and warn of potential collisions. iOnRoad warns you of collisions with audio and visual alerts, even when running in the background!

HEADWAY MONITORING WARNING
Use your cam to monitor your headway distance for ongoing feedback in a HUD-like display.

LANE DEPARTURE WARNINGS (free for a limited time!)
Receive an audiovisual warning in case you are departing off the highway road (over 60 km/h). This can be a true life saver if you are swerving, drowsy or otherwise distracted.

ULTIMATE CAR LOCATOR – for premium version
The BEST car locator. AUTOMATICALLY detects you are parked and takes a snapshot of your parking spot. Later it will guide you to your car using the GPS and the snapshot to guide you indoor as well.

The application itself also has a very nice and easy interface, which gives you easy access to maps and music. You can also customize it so for example, if you want the music choice to open Slacker, it will do that. You can even set it so that iOnRoad opens automatically when your phone is inserted into its mount. If that’s not enough, how about the fact that it can read your text messages. Last but not least iOnRoad is a finalist for best driving app at CTIA this year.

iOnRoad is free, but if you want some more features like the Ultimate Car Locator, you can get the premium version which costs $4.99. The paid version also allows you to disable ads.

Check out the video below and then give it a try via one of the download links below

Hands on with Smart Online’s SmartOn Mobile Platform for creating your own Android Apps

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:41 AM PDT

I had a chance to sit down with Smart Online at CTIA yesterday. They have a unique online app builder for Android (and iOS) that was first introduced back in January. What seems to separate this builder as opposed to others is the fact that they are really working closely with the app creators. Many of them are marketing reps in the enterprise world that have ideas for apps, but simply can’t wait until their IDT departments get the job done. Smart Online takes input provided by many of these companies and adds features as they’re needed, which provides a constant flow of updates. In fact they’re usually adding updates at least once a month. Of course as consumers, SmartOn is also available and quite easy to use as you will see in the video after the break.
