The verdict is in. Google did not breach Oracle patents.

Posted: 23 May 2012 04:21 PM PDT

Not Guilty. Finally the two words that Android fans worldwide were waiting to hear have been uttered, bringing and end to lengthy court case . After a week long deliberation the jury in California ruled in favour of Google declaring that the search giant did not infringe on Oracle’s patents with Android. Earlier this month we brought you the news that the jury had concluded that Google had infringed on 37 separate API’s. The jury has since concluded that Google adequately demonstrated that it felt it was acting within the law due to its belief that it didn’t need a license to utilise java,

The news represents a significant victory for Google who would have been set to pay damages of up to $1bn should it have been found guilty. Naturally, both firms have released statements post verdict.

Oracle:

Oracle presented overwhelming evidence at trial that Google knew it would fragment and damage Java. We plan to continue to defend and uphold Java’s core write once run anywhere principle and ensure it is protected for the nine million Java developers and the community that depend on Java compatibility.

Google:

Today’s jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle’s patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem.

So another law suit bites the dust; Google and Android live to fight another day. Do you think we’ve heard the last of it or will Oracle by ready to launch an appeal? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Rumor Suggests Microsoft Office Heading to Android in November

Posted: 23 May 2012 11:37 AM PDT

These days Android tablets are becoming more and more a suitable outright replacement for laptops. Coupled with a keyboard dock, an Android tablet can pretty much do anything you could do on a laptop although some would say the available software can be limiting. According to BGR, Microsoft plans to change that belief by releasing its full suite of Office applications for Android tablets. The rumor suggests that Microsoft is targeting a November release not only for Android, but iOS products as well. It is believed that since iOS products go beyond just the iPad, Microsoft’s upcoming mobile Office suite could possible work on smartphones as well. This could mean availability for Android smartphones, too, but that is just a hunch at this point.

Now I realize that there are plenty of other options out there that basically reproduce everything that Office can do, it just sure would be nice to have everything packaged neatly into one solitary app. What do you guys think, is this something you would be interested in for your Android device?

[Breaking] Google to release 5 Nexus devices on November 5th to celebrate Android’s 5th birthday

Posted: 23 May 2012 10:40 AM PDT

Last week we reported that Google would offer five Nexus devices later this year and sell them directly out of the Play Store. Well, a reliable source just told us that we can expect to see them on November 5th. Why November 5th? It just so happens it’s Android’s 5th Birthday. Now you can clearly see why they plan on offering five devices.

Right now it’s a little unclear if they will actually be released or unveiled on November 5th. Last year the Galaxy Nexus was unveiled on October 18 (originally scheduled for October 11), and released overseas in mid November. The timing makes perfect sense so definitely mark your calendars for Monday, November 5, 2012 for a very big day indeed.

Galaxy S III Gets Abused and Doesn’t Flinch [Video]

Posted: 23 May 2012 10:10 AM PDT

Ever wondered how the Galaxy S III would fare in a scratch test? Well thanks to Android Caotic and a dude named Paul from Samsung Italy, we now have a video showing the device being abused (sort of). The video is supposed to be a demonstration of a scratch test but as you will see the guy uses the round metal plug from a European phone charger. While I wouldn’t try this test with any of my devices, when I think of a scratch test I think of some dude using a key to repeatedly scratch a device’s screen. Either way, this is decent proof that the Gorilla Glass 2 screen on the GSIII can handle some unwanted abuse. Oh, and they also show how the polycarbonate back plate can be nearly bent in half repeatedly without any damage. I imagine the earlier rumored ceramic coating would’t have fared so well. The device may be plastic but at least you know it won’t shatter like an iPhone! Jump past the break to check out the video.

Kai Platform Detailed by NVIDIA, Wants to Make $199 Tegra 3 Android Tablets a Reality

Posted: 23 May 2012 09:41 AM PDT

While NVIDIA hinted in March that we could see a $199 Tegra 3 based tablet as early as summer, they’ve fully declared it today as they detailed their new Kai Platform. Hoping to get in on the success that Amazon had with the Kindle Fire companies are looking at bringing a cheaper tablet into the market without sacrificing the power under the hood. With the Kai Platform NVIDIA looks to do just that. As Rob Csongor, VP of Investor Relations put it:

“Our strategy on Android is simply to enable quad-core tablets running Android Ice Cream Sandwich to be developed and brought out to market at the $199 price point, and the way we do that is a platform we've developed called Kai. So this uses a lot of the secret sauce that's inside Tegra 3 to allow you to develop a tablet at a much lower cost, by using a lot of innovation that we've developed to reduce the power that's used by the display and use lower cost components within the tablet.”

As of right now the Kai Platform should be considered a reference design that others can use to build lower cost Android tablets. There aren’t specifications on what kind of tablets will arrive using this platform but it does add weight to the rumor of Google and Asus building a $199 Tegra 3 tablet. Considering that Google I/O is just around the corner it shouldn’t be too much longer to see if these rumors are true. We’ll keep you posted.

Samsung Releases Galaxy Note ICS Source Code, Custom ROMs in Tow

Posted: 23 May 2012 08:46 AM PDT

If you thought the Galaxy Note was nice all on its own, wait until the development community conjures up a few custom ROMs for the kit. Samsung just released the device’s source code so that is exactly what is going to happen, and I imagine the first few ROMs and kernels will pop up in only a matter of days, if not tonight. Based off of the international version of the note, the source code will provide developers all the stuff they need to build a custom ROM and even an overclocked custom kernel. Ultimately this means getting rid of unneeded software and adding performance tweaks and features that generally provides a more awesome experience. Not to say the the Galaxy Note experience isn’t awesome on its own, this will just give you rooted users something more to look forward to.

If you are the developer type, or are simply just curious, hit up the source link below to see what the GNote is made of.

Faulty Component Delays Acer Iconia Tab A510, Olympic Edition May Still Ship Next Month

Posted: 23 May 2012 08:45 AM PDT

For those of you that wanted to get your hands on the Iconia Tab A510 from Acer you’ll have to wait a bit longer. While the Olympic Version of the device became available at the beginning of May, mass shipments appear to be delayed. The reason, faulty components. Which component being the culprit is anyone’s guess. What this means though is that both the A510, and the 3G version the A511 will both be delayed. For how long is again, anyone’s guess. A quick Amazon search (see below) does show that the product is under review and isn’t available.

With that being said, we’ll keep you posted on when this device becomes available again. On a positive front it’s good to note that Acer is saying that the Olympic version of the tablet is still a go for next month. This suggests that the problem is either nonexistent on those versions of the A510 or that Acer deems it more than enough time to weed out the issue. This may bode well for the non-Olympic and 3G counterparts as well, but only time will tell. While this could be considered bad press for Acer, the fact that they are fixing the problem before the masses purchase the device is nice to see.

Samsung Admits that Leaked S Voice App Was Being Blocked

Posted: 23 May 2012 07:57 AM PDT

In a move that surprised probably no one, Samsung blocked access to its servers from the leaked S Voice App. Meaning that when people, like yours truly, installed the app intending on giving it a whirl they received a network connection error. However since then a second version has been leaked that fools servers into thinking that it’s running from an actual Galaxy S III. After playing with it, I have to admit that I like the idea, but I digress. After it blocked server access Samsung remained quiet on the issue. That is, until today. According to them the reason that app was blocked is that it’s an “initial test version” and not ready for consumer use yet. As they put it:

“An initial test version of S Voice which was found online has been blocked as Samsung Electronics does not want consumers to judge the quality of the voice feature based on a test version. When the product is launched, users of GALAXY S III will be able to fully experience S Voice.”

Honestly, I can understand why Samsung did as such, but given that it wasn’t designed to run on our hardware, I’m pretty sure the those who installed it took that into account. While there isn’t word that S Voice will run on any other device released before the S III, like my Galaxy Nexus, you can bet that we’ll take it for a spin once we get ahold of the S III. Of course if the development community has anything to say about it, it’ll be up and running for everyone, and not just ICS users, in no time.
