Watch the First Publicly Aired Video from Google’s Project Glass

Posted: 25 May 2012 01:23 PM PDT

Google's Project Glass has been getting quite a bit of buzz lately even though it is still in its "project" phase. We have already seen a few Google execs wearing the glasses (or would it be glass?) in public and a few have even posted example photos on Google+. Speaking of posting on Google+, the company also recently posted a short 15 second sample video showing us what 720p video looks like when recorded via the wearable tech. We have included the video after the break for your viewing pleasure and as you will see the quality is pretty damn good.

Click here to view the embedded video.

In other Project Glass news, Google continues to publicly field test the device and recently supplied the eye-wear to select lucky employees during an event dubbed "Google Glass Walk." You can see one of the images taken from the event posted above and you can also view the entire album through the Google+ link below.

We still have no idea when theses AR glasses will become available to the public but we are hoping to hear more the week of July 27th during Google I/O. It is expected that a pair of these glasses will run about the same price as a current smartphone.  Is the current hype enough for you to consider buying a pair of these, or do you still need more convincing? Let us know in the comments.

More info on the LG LS860 ‘Cayenne’ for Sprint surfaces, Qualcomm S4 and more

Posted: 25 May 2012 10:59 AM PDT

Yesterday the LG LS860 “Cayenne” leaked, which is a QWERTY slider destined for Sprint. At the time it seemed like a Viper with the addition of the slider, but it appears to be a little better. We thought it would have the Qualcomm Snapdragon S3, but it appears it will come with the Snapdragon S4, which puts it in line with the AT&T HTC One X, Sprint EVO 4G LTE, and most likely all U.S. Samsung Galaxy S III variants.

The 4-inch (800 x 480) IPS display is confirmed as well as LTE capability, but we also learned it will have a 5MP rear camera, VGA (640 x 480) front-facing camera, 8GB of internal storage, 1700mAh battery, and it will be 12.2mm thick. ICS isn’t confirmed, but I would expect it to be onboard since this one isn’t scheduled till the 3rd quarter. I guess in a sense, the fact that it has the S4 in it isn’t all that surprising since we won’t see this baby until at least July or August.

Either way it’s still a mid-level phone that just so happens to have a nice processor.

Android OS is top dog according to Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix Report

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:08 AM PDT

Mobile advertising platform company Millennial Media has just released their Mobile Mix Report for Q1 that includes data on mobile devices, manufacturers and operating systems as well as global technological trends. According to the report, Android is the leading operating system today. This news comes as no surprise given the fact that the Android OS comprises of 59% of smartphone market share.

What is also interesting is that the original Samsung Galaxy Tab appears to have the number two spot in tablets, beating out Amazon’s Kindle Fire and coming in behind Apple’s iPad. The report appears to be measuring advertisement activity within the devices to assess trends among each category. Being that Google is the king of ads, we can see how the Galaxy Tab, having been around for a good bit, would be at the top of the tablet category.

Other honorable mentions include Samsung being the number two manufacturer and mobile gaming saw an increase of 10% from last year. Hit the source link below for more details on this unique collection of data.

Bump App Improved by adding Desktop Photo Sharing

Posted: 25 May 2012 07:36 AM PDT

Originally Bump was great for sharing photo, apps, contacts, and other information from phone to phone. I used it a number of time, and for me it always worked great. Although I haven't used it in a long time, I may give it another shot with this new feature they are offering. Bump is now giving users the option to share only photos with your desktop pc. 'How does this work?' You may ask. Well you'll need to have the application installed on your Android device, head over to the Bump website on your desktop pc, choose the photo's you'd like to move, and hit the spacebar on your computer and magic! The photos are now on your pc. If you feel like giving it a shot, let us know how it goes for you.

NVIDIA expects 30 phones to sport the Tegra 3 in 2012, teases LTE compatibility with upcoming Grey SoC

Posted: 25 May 2012 06:53 AM PDT

NVIDIA is looking to capitalize on the success of the Tegra 2 chipset from last year. There were 15 smartphones that sported it, and this year’s Tegra 3 will be on 30 according to NVIDIA GM Mike Rayfield who spoke at their annual investor meeting yesterday. He also emphasized that most of these phones will be cheaper as in 13 of them have a transfer price (not retail price) of under $300 as compared to zero last year.

The problem that has been a thorn in NVIDIA’s side has been LTE compatibility. It was the reason for the delay of the DROID Bionic last year. Yes nobody will admit it, but I firmly believe it. This issue has helped Texas Instruments, whom Motorola went to, and certain Qualcomm, who both Samsung and HTC went to for U.S. releases. Well the good news is they are making progress. They announced that its first LTE modem, the Icera 410, has been certified for AT&T’s LTE network which we reported yesterday. They also introduced its successor, the Icera 500. They didn’t give much details about the 500, but they did say it would be paired with the upcoming “Grey” processor. The Grey SoC won’t show up until next year, but the Icera 410 will arrive later this year. I’m thinking the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 that just hit the FCC with AT&T LTE radios on board.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL shows up at the FCC with hints to AT&T LTE

Posted: 25 May 2012 06:49 AM PDT

We have caught a glimpse of the up and coming tablet from ASUS, dubbed TF300TL. The standard tablet from ASUS is know to be Wifi enabled, but we've yet to see one 3G/4G capable until today. The FCC has recently listed a 10-inch ASUS TF300TL. Based on the FCC E-filings we see the frequencies for the makings of a HSPA 3G (850MHz/1900MHz) and LTE 4G (700MHz/1700MHz) that would lead us to believe that this tablet could be an offering of AT&T in the near future. There are no indications as to when this Transformer Pad will pass thru the FCC, but we'll keep our ear to the ground and relay any breaking news to our readers.

Side note since we’re on the subject of ASUS: Including today, there are 6 more days left for your chance to enter Week 3 of our ASUS Transformer Pad Prize Pack giveaway courtesy of ASUS, NVIDIA, and Talk Android.

WebOS Enyo core team heads to Google

Posted: 25 May 2012 06:29 AM PDT

With webOS kind of dead at the moment, it looks like most of the team that was repsonsible for Enyo is heading to Google. Enyo is webOS’s HTML5-based application framework that was first and last seen on the TouchPad. It was originally thought the entire team was leaving, but it appears it will only be part of it. Matt McNulty, who was the man in charge of the project will be among the people moving and it also appears that the ones that are leaving were responsible for 99% of the code.

Does this mean that webOS won’t be open sourced? Absolutely not as HP made the following statement:

We’re pleased with the traction Enyo has gained to date and plan to continue its development along with the open source community. The Open webOS project is on schedule and we remain committed to the roadmap announced in January.

The other question is what these guys will do at Google? This is unknown right now, but obvious places would be Android and/or the Chrome group. Don’t forget current Android design chief, Matias Duarte, was the  Vice President of Human Interface and User Experience for Palm. This should be interesting so stay tuned.

Tegra 3 Powered Nexus Tablet Built by ASUS to be Unveiled at Google I/O?

Posted: 24 May 2012 08:12 PM PDT

There are many things to look forward to when the annual Google I/O rolls around and new Android hardware is one of them. According to a “trusted source” close to Techno Buffalo we have at least one piece of hardware we can look forward to at this this years conference and it may even go home with each attendee. TB is reporting that the previously rumored ASUS branded Nexus tablet will finally rear it’s head. Sure, nothing new here except for the fact that this tablet is suggested to be powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. How can this be you ask? Wasn’t the Nexus tablet supposed to be around the $200 price point? Yes it was, and it still can be. Don’t forget about Project Kai that we just heard about. That’s the NVIDA Tegra 3 chip designed to be reasonably priced while still providing the power we have come accustomed to when it comes to Tegra 3 performance. See, everything is starting to fall into place… sort of. Conflicting reports are also saying that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean may or may not come pre-loaded on the developer giveaway tablet but it kind of seems a bit early for that. Good thing June 27th is just a month away, we will be on scene to report the full scoop.

Best Buy Leak Shows Canadian Galaxy S III Launch on June 20th

Posted: 24 May 2012 06:51 PM PDT

Will the Galaxy S III rumors ever die down? Probably not. Well, at least until it gets released everywhere they won’t. The latest news on the GSIII front comes from our friends up north of the boarder and is actually quite believable. It seems Mobile Syrup got there hands on a leaked Best Buy screen shot showing that the Galaxy S III will land in Canada on June 20th. This makes sense not only because Mobile Syrup was asked to remove the screenshot you see above, June 20th also happens to be the first day of summer and Sammy has be quoted as saying that the GSIII will arrive “in time for summer.” Coincidence? We think not.

Reports are also saying that Canadian pre-orders will begin on May 30th, at the same time a Canada-wide GSIII training program is scheduled to kick-off. If you live in Canada it won’t be hard to locate one of these bad boys because TELUS, Bell, WIND, Videotron, SaskTel, Mobilicity, Virgin Mobile and Rogers are all said to carry the device. As far as retail locations who have been confirmed to stock the device, you can expect Future Shop and Best Buy to have you covered. May 30th is just around the corner so you Canadians should be prepared to get your pre-order on. Stay tuned as we will fill you in if we hear anything more.

AT&T HTC One X Bootloader Unlocked!

Posted: 24 May 2012 05:37 PM PDT

Many AT&T customers picked up a new HTC One X in hopes that someday HTC and AT&T would unlock the device's bootloader. Time went by and the situation hadn’t changed and HTC even went as far as citing "restrictions" (see AT&T) that prevent them from unlocking the One X. As you can imagine people weren’t pleased with this situation and ultimately the Android dev community geared up for work. After a few weeks of hacking one crafty XDA member reached the triumphant goal before anyone else. Thanks to grankin01 we now have a round-about way of unlocking the "restriction" ridden bootloader of the AT&T’s One X.

The way in which this process works is by tricking HTC's unlock tool into thinking the AT&T version of the One X is actually a Canadian One XL. A simple swap of the hex value now disguises the One X as a Rogers One XL and will now be granted full access to the unlock tool. The process is rather lengthy but is actually quite simple in theory so if you are familiar with adb and a hex editor you may want to give it a go. You must be rooted and if you have already manually upgraded your device to the recent OTA leak this will not work for you. If all this sounds like gibberish then I highly recommend waiting for an easier solution. A more user friendly option is bound to pop up sooner or later now that this method has been established.

Jump past the break for full instructions and be sure to head over to XDA to thank grankin01 for this method.

As always, proceed at your own risk. No one is at falt for bricking your device other than you and THIS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA!! That being said, good luck and let us know how it goes! :-D

Alright, once again, you do this at your own risk!
You need ADB and an understanding of how to use it and have a rooted device (although I didn’t test this). You will also need a hex editor like HxD.

BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE DOING THIS!!!! WHEN HTCDEV UNLOCKS YOUR DEVICE YOU MUST START FROM SCRATCH!!!

1. Fire up your command prompt and go to the directory that you have ADB installed to. Type “adb shell” and hit enter.

2. Type “su” and hit enter. You now have root privileges.

3. Next type “dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 of=/sdcard/mmcblk0p4″ and hit enter. This will dump the partition to your sdcard.

4. Next type “exit”, hit enter, type “exit”, and hit enter again. This should take you back to a command prompt for your computer.

5. type “adb pull /sdcard/mmcblk0p4″ and hit enter.

6. Open the file (mmcblk0p4) with your hex editor.

7. Look for offset 00000210 and you should see CWS_001 with your IMEI number attached to it.

8. Change CWS_001 to ROGER001 and save the file as mmcblk0p4MOD.

9. Now go back to your command prompt and type “adb push mmcblk0p4MOD /sdcard/mmcblk0p4MOD” and hit enter.

10. Type “adb shell” and hit enter then type “su” and hit enter again. This will put you back into the android shell and give you root privileges.

11. Type “dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0p4MOD of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4″ and hit enter. To test if it worked restart the phone into fastboot (type “adb reboot bootloader” and hit enter) and once the bootloader screen comes up type “fastboot oem readcid” and hit enter. It should read “ROGER001″.

12. Next type “fastboot oem get_identifier_token” and hit enter. Leave that up on your screen and go to HTCdev.com. Follow the instructions from there.
