Sony confirms Xperia Play won’t receive Android 4.0

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:54 AM PDT

Sony today confirmed what had been merely rumor just some days ago, the Xperia Play will not get an Ice Cream Sandwich update.  Speaking from the company's blog, we learn that the Android 4.0 update has been given an 11th-hour shelving based on feedback and in-house testing.  Because Sony is unable to deliver the kind of quality experience they were hoping for, the Android smartphone will stay with 2.3 Gingerbread.  Officially, that is.  Of course, if you really want to get your hands on the 4.0 stuff, it's just a matter of Google searches before you're done.

In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.  This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community...

On a more positive note for Sony, things seem to moving quite well in regards to other Android 4.0 updates. The Xperia arc, neo, mini, mini pro, pro, active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman should see updates next week. The Xperia S is slated for end of June with the Xperia P and Xperia U close behind.

Future Google+ experience may include ‘Events’, ‘Local’ features

Posted: 25 May 2012 07:22 AM PDT

A pair of potential future features for Google+ have been found hiding in the code for the brand new Android application.  According to a source close to The Verge, the 2.6 Android app had references to Events and Local features nestled right next to Photos, Circles and the other Google+ stuff you're familiar with.  After digging through the code, The Verge was able to confirm the mentions.

As to what these two new options might actually do remains to be seen, however it's pretty easy to conjure up a few ideas.  We're curious to see what the differences might be between Nearby and Local, if any.

Considering these features just arrived in the new build, we might expect some noise around these components before long.

Posted: 22 May 2012 11:27 AM PDT

It's that time of the month when we come up with a good news for all the HTC fanboys out there, and this one might be the best so far. HTC posted a proper timeline on their support page a few days ago, where the Android giant confirmed when their  phones will see the ' ICS light'. All the recently released phones are mentioned in the list, and about the Droid Incredible 2, the phone is still in the pipeline, and HTC is still thinking to launch or not to launch ICS for it.

Keep in mind folks that the devices will receive Sense 3.6 with Ice Cream Sandwich. The reason why it will be missing Sense 4.0 as it requires dedicated hardware, and all these old devices are missing it, though you can always look over at XDAdev for the Sense 4.0 ROMS.

For all other devices, check out the list below:

So that's what HTC is cooking for their Android lovers, I hope to see the updates on time. Anyone else excited for this update? Tell us in the comment box below.
