Imangi and Disney collaborate on Temple Run: Brave, out now on Google Play

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 03:10 AM PDT

In yet another game and movie tie-in, Imangi has teamed up with Disney to release Temple Run: Brave, the sequel to the wildly popular game Temple Run.

In Temple Run: Brave, you will be taking on the role of the bright-haired Merida. She’s the main character on the upcoming Disney animated feature Brave, who happens to be a skilled archer. Instead of running away from evil monkeys, you'll be running for your life to avoid the wrath of the demon bear Mordu.

Aside from the usual run, jump, and slide that fans of the game are accustomed to, there will be a new move that they need to pull off: shoot. Hitting bullseye with your arrow means earning extra coins. Check out the trailer to see how it works.

Unlike the predecessor, you will have to plunk down $0.99 to download Temple Run: Brave on Google Play. However, you'll start off the game with free 2500 coins for power-ups and more. Reviews seem to be favorable so far, mainly due to the new visuals and enhanced gameplay, but the game appears to lag on several devices. It's a minor kink that we're sure Imangi will iron out soon.

Yahoo! Cricket: A must-have app for cricket fans

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Bat-and-ball games, for some reason, attract a hefty number of fans the world over. Baseball, softball, and cricket are three of the more famous variations of bat-and-ball games, cricket being the most famous.

Surprised it’s not baseball? Apparently cricket sits in the second spot as the world’s most popular sport, next to football. The sport’s popularity is mainly due to its large number of fans in India, Australia, and some parts of Asia and Europe. The sport was the brainchild of the British, so it’s really not surprising to know that those areas got hooked with it, since these places were once colonized by the British Empire.

Enough about the yesteryear, let’s get back to the present. Having cricket as a very popular game, fans would want to be updated with anything related to the sport–news, match schedules, scores, ball-by-ball commentaries, and even player information. When you are a die-hard Cricket fan, you would want to know all the latest news and live updates even when you are mobile. Finally, your Android device can answer that need with Yahoo! Cricket.

Yahoo! Cricket is what cricket fans with Android devices lack in their lives. The app had been available for other clients of Yahoo! Cricket for some time now, but just recently was it officially launched on the Google Play Store.

Keep in mind, this app was developed by Yahoo! so we can expect nothing short of spectacular, right? The app boasts a very sleek and easy-to-use interface. Four main tabs that anchor the matches, news, photos, and teams, make navigation around the app a breeze.

Results of recently completed matches, together with their full scorecards and player stats, can be checked in the Matches tab. Upcoming matches and further details of the ongoing cricket series can also be viewed in this tab. The News tab, as its name suggests, gives you the latest news about the cricket world. The Photos tab has tons of albums containing photos of matches, players, and a lot more while the Teams tab shows the list of all the teams, their current rankings, and detailed information about their players.

Match summaries are also presented in landscape mode, including detailed breakdowns of innings with ball-by-ball commentaries. Tapping the tab switches from ball-by-ball commentary view to the summary view and vice-versa.

If a match is currently going on in another part of the world, the app can still keep you updated with the latest scores even if you are oceans away.

One neat feature this app has is the option to have user-defined score refresh rates. You can even shake the device to have the scores refreshed. With this, it’s like you’re watching the match, keeping count of the scores with fellow fans.

Yahoo! Cricket engages the user with its interactive content, making you experience cricket like you’ve never experienced it before, with your Android device, of course. Whether you are on the go or just lounging around your house, you are kept up to date with everything about your favorite sport.

Definitely a must-have for any cricket fan, Yahoo! Cricket should be deemed a staple in your Android device. As a cricket-lover, would you go on wandering aimlessly in the world of cricket without this app? Guess not.

With not a second to waste, head on to the Google Play Store and grab Yahoo! Cricket for free.

Quad-core S4 LG Eclipse coming to AT&T and Sprint, may hit stores on October 31

The Samsung Galaxy S3 hysteria is reaching a fever pitch right now, but give it a couple of months and phone geeks will be itching for next big thing to get their paws on. We've covered why LG Eclipse is the perfect candidate for that, as it definitely has the specs it needs to stand up against the big boys in the smartphone market. Now, there's another good reason to start saving your money.

UnwiredView has spotted a filling on Bluetooth SIG, which indicates that both the AT&T (LG E970) and Sprint (LG LS970) versions of the LG Eclipse have been approved for sale. The more interesting part, however, is the phone's expected arrival in the US.

According to the description, the phone will be available in the American market around October 31, 2012. It's still unknown which version of the LG Eclipse will hit stores first, though.

To understand why we've been drooling over the LG Eclipse, you need only to read the expected specs. We're talking about a phone that will boast the first-of-its-kind quad-core 1.5GHz Krait S4 processor and Adreno 320 GPU. Add 4.7-inch WXGA display of 1280 x 768 resolution, 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM, 13MP front camera, 1.3MP rear camera, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and a removable 2,100mAh battery. This is a recipe for one heck of a super phone.

While we've hoped that the LG Eclipse would come sooner, October 31 is still a good enough date, and for LG it might better to avoid the competition of the S3-One X duo. Well, there’s always the Motorola Droid Razr HD to take into account, but that one is coming to Verizon.

Does the LG Eclipse have what it takes to stop you from getting the Samsung Galaxy S3?

Hands-on pictures of the HTC Desire V, with some benchmarks on the side

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

CNMO

Dual-SIM phones have been around since the early 2000s, so they aren't really anything out of the ordinary these days. But when a dual-SIM device is being released by a major manufacturer such as HTC (or Sony, for that matter), it’s certainly something to behold, at least for a while.

Below you'll find some hands-on pictures of the dual-SIM HTC Desire V, as posted by CNET Asia, along with their brief impression of the phone.

First, here's a quick reminder about the HTC Desire V's specs. The phone comes with a 4-inch WVGA display, 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7227A processor, enhanced Adreno 200 GPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash, microSD card slot, Beats audio enhancement, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sense 4, and 1,650mAh battery. The Desire V measures at 62.3 x 118.5 x 9.3 mm and weighs 114 grams.

Moving on to CNET's impressions of the phone. Like other recent offerings from HTC, the Desire V has an attractive unibody design that almost rivals that of the One X. The solid build of the phone gets CNET’s (and ours) approval.

Because it's a dual active phone (HSDPA and EDGE), it means you can receive incoming calls on the second SIM card even when you're talking on the first one. The status bar on top will show the two networks your phone is connected to. Making a phone call is as simple as choosing from which SIM card you want to call from.

The screen, despite its 800 x 480 resolution, looks great. And while the Desire V has a 5MP rear shooter with autofocus, it lacks the pizazz of its One series cousins – mostly due to the absence of HTC's imaging chip, which makes HD video recording out of the question. In terms of performance, the single-core processor shows its age and you can expect some sluggishness.

As a bonus, CNMO has posted some benchmarks results of the HTC Desire V (or its equivalent in China – the HTC T328w).

The HTC Desire V is already available in China, and it will hit other Asian countries in the coming days for roughly US$350. We're not sure why there's a big price discrepancy from the European market, as the phone is expected to cost US$470 there.

How about it, interested in getting the HTC Desire V?

Pair: Android app for couples to bridge long distances privately and safely

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

One of the greatest trials a couple can go through is being in a long distance relationship. Less time to see each other, shorter conversations on the phone (especially if you are particular about phone bills), longer nights without the other, and a lot more that could pose a threat to your relationship. Being far from each other is, most of the time if not always, coupled with trust issues.

Whether you’ve been together for eons or for a couple of weeks, trust is key to every relationship, especially when both of you are separated by thousands of miles.

Frequent text messaging, calling, and chatting are probably the first three solutions you’ll resort to when you want to keep in touch with your loved one. But, have you ever thought of doing something more than these three? Has it ever crossed your mind that there is one solution out there that can get you even closer to your significant other?

These two questions have definitely crossed the minds of Pair’s developers. Pair is an application that establishes a private connection between you and your loved one. Yes, a private connection.

You won’t have to worry about sending a text message to the wrong person, especially if it’s a personal message. Mistakenly sending an “I can’t wait to see you” message to your boss would be quite embarrassing, wouldn’t it?

Pair takes keeping in touch a notch higher. From the name itself, you need to “pair” your device with your loved one’s. This does not entail the use of Bluetooth, by the way.

All you have to do is sign up for an account, for free, after you’re done installing the app. Send an invite to your loved one, either by mail or by sending an introductory video. Your loved one will be prompted to accept your invitation and install the app, if he/she hasn’t installed it yet, to start sharing with you.

Pair allows you and your significant other to swap messages in the form of videos, or handwritten notes, photos, locations, and even virtual kisses which the app calls “ThumbKisses” with each other, more of like a shared timeline that is privately accessible to only the two of you. You can draw sketches and exchange them, or you can both work on one sketch together, in real-time.

Pair also has a feature called Moments that stores all your sketches and photos in one big collection. If you want to relive a certain captured moment or remember the fun you had while working on a sketch with your loved one, just access Moments.

Another important feature that is worth pointing out is Pair’s Shared To-Do List. Both of you can add and check off completed tasks, keeping the other constantly reminded of things you both need to attend to.

This app also reminds you of your anniversary, birthdays, and other important events. Avoid getting in trouble just because your forgot your anniversary, your partner’s birthday, or your own birthday.

One thing you’ll find unique about this app is that it also values integrity and faithfulness. Pair allows you to have only one connection, and that sole connection is the one you have with your partner.

The app basically keeps you honest and faithful, unless you have another device that can also run the app. In the case of a break-up, you can always unpair your device from your ex-partner and maybe find a new person to use Pair with.

Despite the fact that Pair limits you to only one connection, it definitely does not limit the features you can enjoy. Having this app while your loved one is oceans away may help die down your feelings of longing. Long distance will surely be of little matter to you, just as long as you have Pair to bring you closer to your partner.

Download Pair for free from the Google Play Store today and start showing your love to your significant other.

MP3dit: Easy editor for ID3 metadata, tags, and album art of your MP3s and other music files

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT

If you are the type of person who loves seeing things in order or in correct, uniform categories, then managing your music library is probably more of a pleasure than a task. Most people would just dump their music files on their phones, not taking into mind if the files are named and sorted properly. Just as long as the audio file plays, everything else is not necessary.

But, then again, not all of us are under the umbrella of “most people”. Some of us would still want to organize our music files even to the most minute detail. The only thing we need is an application that does just that, and probably more, without even touching the computer.

MP3dit, smartly named after fusing the words MP3 and edit, is a tag editor for music files. With this app, you can edit your music files’ metadata (album name, artist, title, album art, genre, song order, etc.) using your Android phone. You wouldn’t need to hook up your phone to the computer just to edit and fix the details of your music files–tasks which can be a bit of an inconvenience especially when you are on the go.

Without complex menus on its UI, the app narrows you down to two options the moment you open the app and see its home screen. You are given the option to either Edit Songs or Edit Albums.

In Edit Songs, you can choose to filter the songs either by song titles or by artists while Edit Albums filters the songs by album titles and also by artists. Edits done to your files will be permanent even if you turn off your phone or transfer the files to another device.

In the case of split albums and scattered songs that belong to one album, MP3dit has the ability to join them just by selecting the albums or the songs that need to be joined and save them as one whole album.

The coolest feature MP3dit offers is the utilization of Google Image Search in your hunt for album art. Search results appear after a few seconds of running the online service and it is then your choice to pick the album art that you think is most relevant and if not, maybe one that greatly appeals to you.

Just by pressing the album art tile found on top when you edit your file, Google Image Search scours the net for relevant album art. You don’t even need to move much of your finger muscles; just let the app do all the searching for you. Just make sure you’ve supplied the necessary metadata on a selected track before you use the Google Image Search service.

To make tag editing even easier, MP3dit was developed to support various audio file formats such as MP3, MP4, M4A, OGG, FLAC, and M4P. In a coming update, as stated by the developer, support for WMA, a revamped UI (that will probably be Holo-themed), and a few more improvements will be included, making the app more awesome than it originally was. Please do remember, this app does not download music. It is a tag editor, not a downloader.

Whether you are the type who takes every small piece of detail into account or the type who cares less about organizing, this app will surely cater to your needs. Extremely simple and easy to use, music file editing will never again be regarded as a tedious task.

Why don’t you go and grab the app and start managing your immense collection of songs? You’ll definitely love how organized your audio files will be.

The app requires Android 2.2 or higher to run and work flawlessly. MP3dit is available in two variants on the Google Play Store: MP3dit Pro (ad-free, paid) and MP3dit (ad-supported, free).

Rebtel 2.0 free VoIP app now supports Android tablets

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 11:58 AM PDT

Just like Skype, Rebtel is a VoIP program that lets users call family and friends for free or cheaper than regular phone calls – via Wi-Fi and 3G/4G, respectively – straight from their smart mobile device. And the company, which describes itself as the "world's largest mobile VoIP company after Skype," announced today the launch of its Rebtel 2.0 Android app that's now customized to support Android tablets.

Rebtel is confident that Android tablets will "see significant increases in the next five years" and therefore its mobile product specifically optimized for Android tablet use will "benefit millions of users who are looking to offset costly international calling rates associated with their traditional service providers."

The app has been available for Android devices, iOS and devices and PCs for a while now and here are its main features:

  • FREE INTERNATIONAL CALLS: from Rebtel to Rebtel app user (Android, iPhone, Blackberry or PC)
  • FREE LOCAL CALLS: avoid paying local minutes or long distance fares in your same country by calling over wifi or 3G
  • EXTREMELY CHEAP INTERNATIONAL CALLS: if you call a landline or someone who doesn't use our app, rates are so cheap that you can call double the time than with your carrier (98% cheaper) to more than 200 countries*: from Nigeria or China to the Philippines, Mexico or the UK. You name it, we have it!
  • WE'RE HIGH QUALITY: Great voice quality regardless of which country and type of phone you call.
  • MAKE A CALL 5 SECONDS FROM NOW: simple sign up, we just need the number you want to use and you can call for free immediately. You have 5 free minutes to check out the service
  • NO NEED TO ADD BUDDIES: your address book is used automatically to connect with your contact, Rebtel behaves like a phone, if you have the number, you can call; no need to ask for approval or add anyone.
  • WORKS WITHOUT WIFI OR 3G: if you want to, you don't need to be online, you can call via local minutes and still save a lot of money
  • NEVER HANG UP A CONVERSATION: Our revolutionary Keep Talking functionality means it's possible to change the call connection type from WiFi or 3G* to a standard call using local minutes by pressing KeepTalking™ during an ongoing call. This allows you to never hang up an important call just because as you move, your Wifi or 3G* signal weakens.

In addition to adjusting the interface of its Android mobile app to take advantage of the bigger tablet display, Rebtel has also updated its app to offer 4G support. Readers, are you already using Rebtel or is Skype satisfying your VoIP needs?

Facebook gaming shows first signs of weakness

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 11:51 AM PDT

facebook-games
It's funny how some companies manage to rise to unbelievable heights in one quarter, only to hit all-time lows the next one. Zynga, the social game developer that has gained most of its profits (and popularity) by developing games for the Facebook platform, turns out to be one of these companies. Shares of the company have dropped to their lowest level since the December IPO (initial public offering). Today, Zynga shares are evaluated at just $4.98, a whole 50% off Zynga's IPO price of $10. Even more disappointing is the fact that each share has depreciated threefold since their record high of $15.91 back in March 2012.

Citing AppData (a service that tracks Facebook app usage), analyst Doug Creutz from Cowen and Co stated that Zynga's Facebook games have lost 8% of their daily active users during May, with "nearly all of the company's major titles declining significantly'', marking the second consecutive month-to-month drop in active users. At this point, it should be mentioned that Zynga has a unique deal with Facebook that allows the social game developer to extend its audience via viral marketing. All other Facebook game developers are "banned" from using viral marketing and forced to turn to (expensive) ads to extend their reach. The fact that Zynga is losing audience despite this exclusive deal with the world's most used social network, is an obvious sign of the precarious health of the Facebook gaming industry.

According to P. J. McNealy, founder of consulting firm Digital World Researc, Google, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon are all courting game developers so that they move away from Facebook and on to mobile gaming. Since most Facebook game developers are already frustrated with Facebook for their exclusive viral marketing deal with Zynga, he argues that this initiative has already shown signs of amounting to the results desired by the four giants mentioned above. However, the most significant push in this direction has will happen in the next 12 months or so.

Apparently, even Zynga has realized that Facebook gaming isn't the Holy Grail that everyone thought it to be just six months ago. As a result, Zynga is already pursuing means to gain profit outside Facebook's platform by developing "light" but successful mobile games such as Draw Something or Words With Friends. In addition, Zynga's "non Facebook related" efforts were also aimed at developing games for their proprietary portal, Zynga.com, despite the fact that their deal with Facebook will last until 2015. Zynga has obviously realized that their dependence on Facebook poses great risks, ones that might end up bankrupting the company.

Ok, so by now we have a clear picture of the fact that Facebook gaming is suffering, but how much damage could this one faulty sector do to the Facebook platform as a whole? Apparently, quite a bit, as Facebook earns a whopping 12 percent of its revenue (analysts believe that, profit-wise, the percentage is even higher) via social gaming. On a personal note, while I believe that Facebook has all it takes to overcome this crisis, it should be a wake-up sign for app developers relying entirely on Facebook for their profits.

Games, fun as they may be to the end users, are still a business like any other in the tech industry, and should follow the golden rule of business: don't place all your eggs in one basket!
