Sprint Galaxy S3 root method posted, works with T-Mobile too

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 02:28 AM PDT

The U.S. Galaxy S3 launch is rather bumpy, with all major carriers having a tough time keeping up with their initial release schedules, but a few buyers in the country have already received their pre-ordered units. In fact, it looks like the Sprint Galaxy S3 root has been already achieved, and the procedure apparently works on T-Mobile Galaxy S3 units too.

The root instructions for the Sprint Galaxy S3 have been already posted on the xda-developers forums, and they're so detailed that even rookies can try their hand at rooting the handset. It goes without saying that we don't recommend that you meddle with your newly purchased handset, especially if you're not comfortable with such procedures in the first place.

However, if you plan to go ahead and root your Sprint Galaxy S3, then you should make sure you back up your data first, just to be on the safe side. Even if you skip that part, the root procedure will not erase your personal data, which is quite convenient. Furthermore, during rooting your device, you'll also install clockworkmod on it, which will get you a custom recovery.

DroidDog reports that the procedure works with T-Mobile Galaxy S3 versions as well, so in case you already got one and want to root it you'll have to follow the same instructions. It's pretty logical to assume that this Sprint Galaxy S3 root method will work with other U.S. Galaxy S3 versions, although that still has to be confirmed with developers.

Finally, before you get on with your rooting, you must know the procedure only works on Windows machines, so in case you only have access to a Mac you're out of luck for now.

Verizon Galaxy S3 release date now said to be July 11

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 01:57 AM PDT

The American carriers that were hoping to have the Samsung Galaxy S3 in stores around June 21 – including AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile – had to postpone the actual launch, just like their Canadian counterparts did a few days ago. Certain pre-orders will be honored with some of these carriers but not all of them, and new units will not be available in carrier stores as initially planned.

Of the Big Four, only Verizon said that it will ship the device in early July from the moment it announced the handset, but it now looks like Big Red will also slightly postpone the launch of its Galaxy S3 model.

According to Unwired View, the Verizon Galaxy S3 is coming by July 11, two days later than initially expected. The phone will retail for $199 or $249, depending on what capacity you choose (16GB and 32GB, respectively) and it will be available both in Blue and White.

In addition to the Big Four, there are two regional carriers that plan to launch the Galaxy S3, U.S. Cellular and C Spire. In fact, if you haven't decided whether to buy this Android flagship smartphone yet, then you should check out our Galaxy S3 reviews  and U.S. launch guide for the handset. Moreover, if you plan to switch from the iPhone to the Galaxy S3 and want to move your iTunes media and other data to the Android phone, there's a simple way to do it via a free app (in certain regions) called Easy Phone Sync.

The Galaxy S3 is not the only Android smartphone delayed by Verizon, as just yesterday we heard that the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE will not be launched this month. Instead the phone is supposed to hit stores on July 5, according to a recent report.

InFoto: Quick and easy infographic about your shutterbug habits

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Not all users are familiar with their phone's hardware and specifications. Most of the time, users don't bother to check them out or even take notice of the many things that their device can do. For tech junkies and hardware enthusiasts, however, knowing what your device is capable of and how you’re using your device is important. That’s where benchmarking comes in.

The Google Play Store is chock full of benchmarking applications that each serve a specific purpose. For those of you who really care about getting hardcore information, here's an app that is designed to get information about your camera usage.

If you're a photography enthusiast, you’ll love being able to track your camera habits and usage. InFoto will gather data such as when, where, and what orientation you take your photos and present it to you in an infographic. InFoto is similar to the iOS app, Photo Stats.

InFoto takes relevant information like the most captured images on your device, the locations where you took your picture, what time of the day you love snapping a shot, and the screen orientation that you prefer taking shots with. You’ll then be given a carefully illustrated infographic that you can easily understand.

On the app's homescreen, you will have the ability to generate infographics from scratch or take a look at your previous one. As soon as InFoto is done gathering information and processing your images, it then shows you a slide of graphical information illustrating your habits.

On the first slide, you will be shown the locations where you’ve used your camera the most.  From here, you can navigate to another slide by swiping left or right to check out other data that the app has in store for you.

The next slide shows your top cities where you have taken photos, followed by your favorite time for taking photos, favorite orientation in taking shots, percentage of photos that have used flash, and the your favorite photo size together with the equivalent ISO value.

Sharing your personal infographic with other members is easy and all you need to do is select the relevant slide you wish to share and send via email or by other means.

If you’re an avid fan of learning new ideas and discoveries through infographics, then InFoto will definitely meet your expectations. The app's graphics are eye-catching but the data it presents are also very useful to shutterbugs.

If you're just a budding photographer and you’d like to know some detailed information on your shutterbug habits, then InFoto is definitely worth your time. Download InFoto Free at the Google Play Store absolutely free. You can also support the developer by purchasing InFoto‘s pro version.

HTC to stop all phones sales in Brazil

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:17 PM PDT

Brazil is soon going to become the 4th largest country of smartphone buying customers, by replacing UK from their current 6th position. So it seems very unfortunate for HTC to have to cancel their planned One series launch for the country, but even more importantly to leave the country altogether. They had 27 million smartphone owners; 9 million smartphones were sold last year alone.

When called for confirmation by AndroidPIT, a HTC executive from Brazil had this to say: ”after analyzing the sales numbers, we have decided to pull out of the Brazilian market.” It seems HTC couldn’t even get 1% market share in the country, and their share has been dropping ever since they stopped producing smartphones in Brazil. The Brazilian government “punishes” companies that aren’t manufacturing their devices in the country by increasing their taxes, which means that HTC’s phones have always been more expensive than competition for the same hardware.

But HTC seems to have had some strategy missteps in Brazil as well. They haven’t offered very good phones to Brazilian customers, other than some  low-end/mid-range phones like the HTC Wildfire, when their biggest competition, like Samsung and Motorola, were offering smartphones like Galaxy S2 and RAZR. They do say they are planning to bring the One series to Brazil, but since they aren’t gaining any momentum in the country, and Galaxy S3 is also launching now, they have decided against it and they will halt all sales in Brazil.

Samsung is doing very well these days, but HTC seems to be at the crossroads right now. I think they need to focus a lot more on bringing innovative features and devices to market, and less on the “sales” aspect of the process, where they try to sell a new tweaked version every couple of months. That being said, I still look forward to see what their Nexus device will be like this fall, among all the other Nexus devices. If they can beat everyone else, it would be a big deal for their image.

DjRun: Your personal DJ for matching music tempo and your body motion

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT

There's nothing better that running in the streets with intense music in the background to fire up your adrenaline. Pumping up energy with music during a miles run is a great way to boost your stamina and makes exercising more fun. Yet, though technology has made almost all our daily activities more entertaining, it isn’t perfect. In fact, one of the most common problems runners and sprinters face is having to manually switch music tracks. Can you imagine jogging up a hill while listening to soothing jazz? It isn’t quite the same level of epic you can get from other tracks.

If you're one of the many users who use their smartphones to listen to music whenever you head out for your sprints or long-mile runs, then why don't you try DjRun? This app is a holo-themed Android music player that manages all of your music and sound selections with ease.

DjRun is not your ordinary music player because the app is smart enough to analyze your current body movement and automatically plays an appropriate sound to match your body's rhythm.

The app can analyze the songs found on your phone and will automatically choose which songs to play, letting you enjoy the bliss of an uninterrupted session of walking, running, jogging, or sprinting every time you leave the house.

Apart from its innovative concept, one thing that makes DjRun stand out is found in its user-interface. The sleek holo-themed interface can entice anyone to use the application. The interface is not just sleek; you can also find various tools and options to experiment with.

What makes it even better is that you don't need to do any configurations to the application. You just need to run the app once, and it will automatically scan and analyze all of the music tracks found on your phone. It is smart enough to sort your music tracks according to their respective tempo (beats per minute). Once the sorting is taken care of, just hit the play button and let DjRun play all of your upbeat tunes whenever you go out for a stroll or a run.

The secret behind DjRun's ability of determining your current body movement lies in your phone's accelerometer. Every time you make a movement, your phone tilts and wobbles, and the faster you are running, the more it shakes and moves.

DjRun is not just limited to runners; the application is also designed to work with other activities that involve body movements. These include hiking, cycling, rowing, and boxing, to name a few. If you're one serious sports buff then DjRun is one of the best application to help you get into the groove.

If you want take a break from all the automation, then you can still control the app manually from the Run tab. Switching to another music track can still be done using the Songs tab, through which you can sort tracks according to artist, tempo, or title. Long-pressing a specific track reveals a menu with options that you can manage.

DjRun is available for free at the Google Play Store. Acer Iconia Tab A700 starts shipping in the US, only silver model available for now

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 11:06 AM PDT

Just 10 days after putting it up for pre-order, Acer has already started shipping the new 10-inch Iconia Tab A700. The quad-core tablet looks pretty awesome on paper and comes with one of the best quality-price ratios we've seen in a while, so you should hurry up and buy it if you fancy an Android-based slate with a lot of oomph and the best possible display around.

The Iconia Tab A700 is not exactly a visually impressive tablet, as its design is identical to the one of Acer's A510. If, however, you'll look past the appearance and into the gadget's core, you'll find a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, the running of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and dual 5 MP/1 MP cameras.

The battery should itself be more than satisfying, being expected to go for a full ten hours between charges based on regular use. Finally, the display is the icing on the new tablet's cake, measuring 10.1-inches in diagonal and featuring a 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution that is currently the highest standard for an Android-based tablet.

So why is the Iconia Tab A700 available for a low price? Honestly, we don't know, but we can't say we care very much either, as long as we can grab it and make use of that snappy hardware.

The Tab A700 can be picked up right now from Acer's official US online store and, aside from all of the cool tech specs and features, you can also get free overnight shipping if you stop wasting time. Unfortunately, the silver model is the only one available right now, with the black version of the 10-incher being currently listed as "out of stock".

Before making the decision to either go for the 10-incher or pass on it, you should also know that the Wi-Fi only model, currently up for sale, will be followed shortly by a 3G version and a 4G LTE-enabled one.

Are you going to grab an Acer Iconia Tab A700 anytime soon? Do you think it will actually provide the bang for the buck we're speculating right now? Is there any other Android-based tablet around with a better quality-price ratio, as far as you're concerned? Let us know down below!

Atari rehashes 80s Centipede classic arcade game, brings Centipede: Origins to Android

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:31 AM PDT

Whether you've grown up playing the classic arcade games or you saw some of those games in movies and dreamt of being born a decade earlier, you are all probably familiar with Atari. The famous gaming developers didn't have an easy time in adapting to the new age, but their most recent Android title doesn't look half bad.

Centipede: Origins, recently unleashed in Google Play, is a rehashed version of the Centipede arcade game that made quite a fuss back in the '80s. With a fun and quirky storyline and decent visuals, Centipede: Origins might be worth your attention. And while it would have been nice for the game to have been made available for free, I'm sure that paying $0.99 for it isn't beyond the reach of most mobile gamers.

The game's main character you'll be playing is a "peace-loving" gnome (told you it was quirky) and your mission will be to protect your precious garden from vicious bugs and the dreaded Centipede. Sounds fun doesn’t it?

Before doing that, I have to warn you not to expect an overly complex gameplay or stunning visuals from Centipede: Origins. There are four playable levels and you'll probably not finish all of them in one day, but, as far as I can tell the action is a bit repetitive and might bore you after a while.

As far as graphics go, Atari has chosen the middle way between 100% retro looks and modern-day HD visuals. The result looks decent enough to be worth its $0.99, but I personally think it would have been better to either go for a full nostalgia-longing design or for a modern, high-resolution look and feel.

Be that as it may, if you've ever wondered who would win a battle to the death between garden gnomes and vicious insects, or you've always wanted to throw a grenade (yes, a grenade!) right in the face of an ugly bug, Centipede: Origins is waiting for you over in Google Play.

Are you going to give Atari’s new game a quick whirl? Why? Why not?

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE launch postponed to July, report claims

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 08:38 AM PDT

While the most anticipated Android smartphone of the summer is the Samsung Galaxy S3, which is supposed to be launched in early July by Verizon, that's not the only new LTE handset Verizon subscribers should be aware of. The HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE is also expected to hit stores soon, and a new report claims the phone has been pushed back to July.

Droid-Life says it has received multiple notifications suggesting that the Droid Incredible 4G LTE will not be available in stores in June, with July 5 looking like the most probable launch for the device.

We will remind you that the Verizon Galaxy S3 is said to be launched on July 11, just a week after the Droid Incredible 4G LTE if today's rumor is true.

The Droid Incredible 4G LTE packs a 4-inch Super LCD display with 960 x 540 qHD resolution, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB memory, microSD support, 8-megapixel camera, 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, 4G LTE support and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4.0 on top.

The phone is expected to retail for $149.99 with new two-year contracts, or $50 less than the cheapest Galaxy S3 version that's going to be available from Verizon. The carrier has not confirmed the price or the release date of the new Droid Incredible 4G LTE at this time.

What Android smartphone will you buy from Verizon this summer?
