Google to give Motorola Mobility its own space

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:21 PM PDT

The acquisition of Motorola Mobility by Google is considered as one of the biggest moves in the technology industry. $12.5 billion isn't a small amount, right? Word was on the street that Motorola will completely merge in with Google, and we might see a time when there would be no Motorola phones, except we will see Google-branded phones with Motorola hardware. Ultimately, nobody knows what Google is actually up to. Google's chief finance officer Patrick Pichette said:

"It's important it stays on its own battlefield. We are not integrating Motorola with Google, we're making sure it has everything it needs to win in its own space. You shouldn't expect a full integration of the two companies."

Motorola is the maker of some of the best Android phones, and we just can't miss the Motorola RAZR, the sexiest Motorola yet. Though there were also such rumors that with the acquisition of Motorola, Google will restrict Android only to their own branded phones, but they agreed to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce's condition that they will keep it free for at least five years, so that's really a relief.

However, I hope to see some delicious devices from Motorola this year, and we recently saw some leaked shots of some upcoming Motorola devices like the Atrix 3 and the RAZR HD.I would love to see a day when Google will launch their own branded device with Motorola hardware. Tell us what do you think about it in the comment box below.

Five for Friday: Expense apps for Android

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 01:46 PM PDT

Whether you are a fifteen year old trying to earn your first few bucks or a Fortune 500 company on the verge of financial collapse, you need to keep an eye on your budget.  And, because it's far too easy to forget that $2.49 energy drink you bought with your debit card, we all need a bit of help. Thankfully, there are a number of solid financial apps in the Google Play Store that can help you monitor where your nickels and dimes go.

Below you will find five apps for tracking expenses and managing your finances from an Android device.  Keep in mind that, even with free apps, there may be a fee or two involved with premium services.  While we recognize that there are more available, we happen to like these particular titles well enough to share them with you, dear reader. We can appreciate that you've got your own ways of keeping track of money that doesn't involve carrying around receipts and copies of checks.  To that end we ask that you share with us in the comments!

This week's topic: Expense apps for Android

Lemon

Ever gone shopping and have the clerk ask you for an email address for receipts?  Give them your personal @lemon.com address and keep this stuff where it belongs, away from your normal emails.  As one of the more robust ways to manage your receipts and expenses, Lemon provides users with features such as summary reports, categories and tags, and the ability to export at any time.  Just bought a hot dog on the corner but can't be bothered with lugging that hefty receipt?  Scan it to Lemon and put that thing in the cloud.

Expensify

Tied to an extremely handy website, Expensify lets users sync credit cards and bank accounts in real time.  In instances where you would have a bunch of silly receipts for Starbucks, candy bars, and fast food, Expensify allows for digital copies (eReceipts) of paper receipts.  Scan a picture of your receipt and watch how the app pulls out the merchant, date and amount of the transaction.  From there, it will go to a new cash expense or corresponding credit card. Need to share your expenses with the boss?  Have Expensify send a PDF of your report to anyone with an email address.

Shoeboxed Receipt Tracker

Snap pictures of your receipts and Shoeboxed will automatically figure out the date, total, payment type, store and category for your digital records.  Create and send expense reports from your phone or tablet, or export them to popular tools such as QuickBooks, Wave Accounting, Excel, and Xero.  Should you need a little help, Shoeboxed offers both email and phone support.

Smart Receipts

Of the five apps highlighted here, this is the "little guy" version of the other players.  Created as an open source app, Smart Receipts lets you take pictures of your receipts and create digital copies, put together expense reports, and more.  Export your data as PDF or CSV and shoot an email off to the proper department or person.  Additional details include multiple currency support, and smart categorization based on time of day.  Spring for the paid $1.99 version (no advertising) and make it your first expense.

Expense Manager

Stay a step ahead of your expenses and deductions with Expense Manager's reminders and alerts.  Have a recurring bill each month?  Why not schedule it into the budget and keep a closer eye on things.  Like the others listed above, you can also snap photos of receipts, import and export, and track things across multiple categories (payer, method, etc).  Bonus points for charts and widgets!  Paid version is $4.99 and is essentially the same app, sans advertisement.

Your Turn

What apps are you using to manage your finances?  Is it one of the above or something we overlooked?  Leave a comment below with your picks!

Alleged HTC One XXL with 2GB RAM, quad-core leaked online (EDIT)

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 08:39 AM PDT

Details of an alleged HTC One XXL have landed online this week, pointing to an improved hardware experience for the company's flagship Android smartphone.  According to information obtained by German tech blog SmartDroid (translate), HTC is developing a variant of the XL which includes 2GB RAM and a quad-core CPU*, and LTE support.  Said to feature a 4.7-inch display like its brethren, the XXL reportedly features a slightly different Adreno 320 GPU.

EDIT: The screen shot does not indicate as to which CPU this model would have, however the source advises Qualcomm Snapdragon S4.

It's a bit early to tell whether this is going to be hitting U.S. soils nor when it will actually be announced.  HTC has a pretty solid track record of releasing two big flagship devices per year so it stands to reason that we could have this arrive in the fall.  We'll be anxious to see if we're able to get a quad-core CPU and LTE on U.S. carrier by the end of 2012.

Google urges developers to make “beautiful, powerful, successful” apps, allows devs to respond to user reviews in Play Store

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 05:54 AM PDT

with Google IO coming up soon, Google is focusing an extremely pinpointed light on their developers. The Android Developer Site has a brand new look to boot, and Google is encouraging developers to make their apps more beautiful, with more streamlined and simple interfaces. According to the Developer's Blog:

"A developer's tasks fall into three baskets: Designing, developing, and distributing. We're trying to make developer.android.com's organization reflect this reality, shepherding you through the app development life cycle, from start to finish."

Google is also making life a little easier for developers by allowing them to respond to user reviews in the Play Store:

"...We're adding the ability for Google Play developers to respond to reviews from the Google Play Android Developer Console. Developers can gather additional information, provide guidance, and — perhaps most importantly — let users know when their feature requests have been implemented."

Any developers out there? Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.
