And then there was AT&T. While the likes of Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and even US Cellular dropped deets of their Samsung Galaxy S III launches this morning, AT&T's kept us waiting with bated breath most of the day. But we've finally got half an announcement. The phone goes up for presale on June 6 (that's this Wednesday) for $199. What has us more than a little miffed is that AT&T's opted to only go with a 16-gigabyte version, whereas every other carrier that announced today will have 32-gigabyte options. Is that the end of the world? No. It's still got a microSD card slot and a 16GB card is available at an extra $39, so you can have 32GB of total storage when you proudly unbox this guy. But when your Verizon and TMo and Sprint and USCC friends are showing off that extra 16GB of storage, don't come crying to us. Oh, but AT&T does have one other trick up its sleeve. In addition to the white and pebble blue options, AT&T will have its own red model as well later this summer. So there's that. Otherwise, we're looking at the same hardware as the other carriers. Google it seems is on a little bit of an acquisition streak at the moment. First up was the Magnolia Broadband patents and now the news has broke on the fact they've started the acquisition of the social startup, Meebo. As noted on the Meebo blog:
The acquisition had been rumored for quite some time now, with All Things D having shed light on the subject before any official announcement. Google has confirmed the Meebo team will be working with Google+ but how much Google paid for Meebo is still a mystery at the moment. It'll be interesting to see what comes from this one over time, let's just hope it doesn't involve some weird toolbars.

| Magnolia Broadband selling off RF patents to Google Posted: 04 Jun 2012 01:39 PM PDT
Looks as though Google is quietly picking up some RF patents for themselves according to a new press release put out by Mooreland Partners. In it, Mooreland Partners notes they'll be heading up the financial advisory position as Magnolia Broadband plans the sale of its patent portfolio to Google. Looking around, Magnolia Broadband holds a large amount of patents and with their focus being RF technologies and better networking, its easy to see why Google would want to own their work. | Watch the Microsoft Xbox SmartGlass presentation from E3! Posted: 04 Jun 2012 12:19 PM PDT If you weren't watching the Microsoft Xbox keynote from E3 live online, or following the WPCentral liveblog -- which you really should have been doing might we add -- then fear not. Thanks to the WPCentral guys, the bit that might interest Android fans is here for you to view at your leisure. We're only really interested specifically in the Xbox SmartGlass announcement, which Microsoft today said will work with Android devices turning them into a second display for your Xbox. There's a chunk that might not end up being useful for us, but the wireless video streaming and second display stuff, well that looks mightily appetizing. We're looking forward to hearing more about this service and just exactly how it's going to pan out on Android, but in the meantime, enjoy.

| Microsoft unveils Xbox SmartGlass, "second screen" functionality heading to Android Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:40 AM PDT
Our buddies over at WPCentral are out in LA right now enjoying the Xbox keynote presentation at E3. Microsoft presentations wouldn't really interest us much, but surprisingly there was a specific mention of Android. It seems the newly unveiled Xbox SmartGlass feature will be compatible with Android. It offers an Airplay-esque functionality, in that videos viewed on a tablet for example can be transferred over to the big screen and picked up where you left off. When viewing on the TV, the tablet then becomes a second screen, displaying additional content. An example shown off was with popular series Game Of Thrones, where the tablet became a map tracking all the on screen action. The keynote has just finished, so we'll be looking forward to further coverage on this from the guys over at WPCentral. More: WPCentral at E3

| Sprint inviting VIP customers to a Galaxy S III event in Boston Posted: 04 Jun 2012 08:55 AM PDT
The cat is well and truly out of the bag regarding the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III, and it seems they're keen to show it off to their customers. Android Central Forums member mercado79 just tipped us off to an invite to an event in Boston scheduled for June 12. Seems that Sprint are keen to let their "VIP" customers get an early hands on with the forthcoming smartphone. There's also talk of prizes, which from Samsung could be a whole array of goodies. It isn't a free-for-all though, to attend you have to register, and with the hype arround the Galaxy S III truly reaching a frenzy, if you're invited early registration is recommended. We've had a lot of hands-on time with the Galaxy S III since its launch back in London. As we speak too, our very own Alex Dobie is working incredibly hard on bringing you the full, comprehensive review. Thanks mercado79!

Taking things in a completely different direction to all the recent Samsung news, Asus have pulled the wraps off their latest Transformer device over at the Computex 2012 show in Taipei. We've seen teaser trailers for the "Next Transformations," along with the announcement of the Bluestacks integration with their Windows PC's that will give access to hundreds of thousands of Android applications. While the majority of Asus' Computex announcements are Windows 8 based, there is one that is quite, quite different. The Asus Transformer AIO is an 18.4-inch, all-in-one desktop PC complete with full touchscreen that runs Windows 8. So how does that affect us? The screen on the AIO detaches, and when it does, it turns into an 18.4-inch Android tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich. 18.4-inches. So it isn't really that portable. But, at the same time, it offers a fully featured Windows PC and a fully featured Android 4.0 tablet. It's potentially an unusual use case, but also an interesting one. We love Android tablets -- figures -- but at the same time there is a distinct lack of productivity when using one. The ability to finish up working in Microsoft Office, then head down to the couch and catch up with your favourite Android applications without having to switch devices is an interesting thought. Details are pretty scarce, as Asus is keeping pretty tight lipped on this one. There's no word on price either, but we'll go out on a limb and expect it to be relatively high. Hopefully it's packing a pretty mighty battery if Asus are expecting people to use it away from the desktop dock. Sadly, the AC crew didn't make it out to Taiwan to play with it for ourselves. T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III with dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2GB of RAM and HSPA+42 connectivity, coming June 21We already knew it, but T-Mobile USA has officially confirmed that it'll be carrying the Samsung Galaxy S III from June 21. Like the other U.S. versions of Samsung's new flagship phone, T-Mobile's Galaxy S III is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. And it'll run on T-Mo's "4G" HSPA+42 network, allowing for faster data speeds than the international version, which tops out at 21Mbps. T-Mobile will sell the Galaxy S III in pebble blue and marble white, just like the other U.S. carriers, and it'll offer the phone with 16 and 32GB of internal storage, in addition to that microSD card slot. Other specs are identical to the international version -- a 4.8-inch HD SuperAMOLED screen, 1.9MP front-facing camera, 8MP rear shooter and 2100mAh battery. (And TouchWiz-topped ICS, of course) The network says it'll begin selling the Galaxy S III from June 21, and there's a sign-up page where prospective customers can leave their details. Sprint announced this morning that they will be offering the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III starting June 21st. We just reported that all the major carriers will offer the new device, but we didn't have specific dates. Sprint's Galaxy S III offering will be unique because it is the only phone to come preloaded with Google Wallet and the only one to offer an unlimited data plan. Sprint has been constantly highlighting the fact that they are sticking with unlimited data plans, which is good to see. The Galaxy S III will be available in 16GB ($199) and 32GB ($249) and also in both Pebble Blue and Marble White. The rest of the specs remain the same. Pre-orders for Sprint begin June 5th, so if you're interested in getting yours, visit Sprint's pre-order page. Samsung's newest flagship phone is almost here and it's great to see carriers announcing both pre-order and release dates. | U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders start June 12 Posted: 04 Jun 2012 06:32 AM PDT
The news may have just dropped last night about five US carriers all getting the Samsung Galaxy S III, but today the news train keeps on rolling. U.S. Cellular have announced their own set of dates for the release of the new Samsung flagship device. Pre-orders for the Galaxy S III will begin on June 12, and will be available in stores in July. The Marble White and Pebble blue variants will be available in 16GB guise, and the 32GB will be available in white. Prices for the LTE enabled device will be available on June 12 when pre-orders begin. Customers are able to sign up for updates from US Cellular from tomorrow, June 5, by heading over to their website. Click on past the break for the full presser.

Now that the cat's out of the bag on the U.S. versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III, it's time for some carrier-specific announcements. First out of the gate is Verizon, which says its GSIII will be available for preorder at 7 a.m. EDT Wednesday, June 6; no actual release date was given. It'll run $199 on contract for a 16GB model, and $249 for a 32GB model. (Pretty sure we know which one we're leaning toward.) Verizon also says that it'll be available in white or the very excellent Pebble Blue, so there's that. It's been a good news kind of weekend for the Samsung Galaxy S III. Not only have we seen a five-pronged attack about to launch on the US market, but news from the UK puts the Galaxy S III at the top as the UK's most popular smartphone. And it's been on sale less than a week, which puts into perspective just how massive the latest Samsung flagship device is going to be. All this comes despite it only being widely available in only one color, and one storage size. Nevertheless, the latest results from the uSwitch Mobile Tracker sees Samsung reclaim the top spot from the white iPhone 4S, amid a storm of marketing, pre-orders and eventual sales this last week. The iPhone finds itself in a full on Samsung sandwich too, with the predecessor to the Galaxy S III, the Galaxy S II still holding strong in third place. The Galaxy S II had been top of the tree in the UK for an incredible 11 consecutive months, before last month finally surrendering to the iPhone. Chances are that the impending arrival of its successor might have had a little something to do with it. Taking a look further down the list, it's an all out Android onslaught. The HTC One X sits fourth, with the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Note inhabiting positions five and six respectively. The black iPhone 4S appears way down in seventh position, with the remaining HTC One devices, the One S and One V taking places eight and nine. Rounding out the top 10 is the Sony Xperia S. Interestingly enough given the apparent popularity of BlackBerry smartphones in the UK, especially with the younger crowd -- they really seem to be everywhere you look -- there is no mention of a single RIM handset in the Mobile Tracker's top ten. Demolition Inc. is somewhat of a favorite of mine at the moment. Its blend of excellent graphics, simple addictive gameplay, and most importantly, blowing things up, makes for a fantastic mobile game. The only downer for many was it's reliance on a Tegra processor, meaning only a select few could enjoy it. Not so anymore, as the developers, Zeroscale Games, have released a version in the Google Play Store that is fully optimized for non-Tegra devices. Originally we'd heard it was due on April 26, but this is definitely a case of better late than never. The blowing things up aspect of the game is made ever better by a truly impressive physics engine. The developers say that nothing is pre-determined, and nothing is pre-animated. The actions taken by the player truly determine the chain of events. There is a kind of story behind all the destruction though. You play as Mike an alien demolition worker, who flies a UFO all over Earth causing destruction and havoc wherever he goes. Using various different 'tools' such as oil slicks, super glue, and even exploding cows, Mike guides the traffic into doing his bidding and causing the series of high-rise buildings to collapse. It's a great game, and can only be helped by now becoming available to a wider audience. Demolition Inc. HD is available now for a price of $1.99/£1.59. While not quite the shocker that having the same Galaxy S III on all carriers, nobody really expected an Instapaper app for Android any time soon. Marco Arment, the creator of the service, has said as much on more than one occasion. Apparently the draw of running on six of every ten smartphones in the world has changed a few things and it's available tonight on Google Play. We'll have to give it a good look over before we pass any judgment, as it has big competition and Android is a whole different ballgame than iOS. And just like that, Samsung has ended a lot of speculation surrounding the U.S. release of the Samsung Galaxy S III. Arriving at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular this month the Samsung Galaxy S III will have a starting price of $199 though exact pricing and release dates are still forthcoming for each. When it comes to specs, Samsung took the time to highlight the fact the U.S. versions will be getting the S4 1.5 GHz dual core processor and 2GB of internal RAM, which is exactly the same as the Japanese and Canadian releases of the device. In other words, as speculated, the device will have the same iconic look across the board, which even Samsung has noted as being an industry first. | ASUS partnering with BlueStacks to bring Android apps to millions of PCs Posted: 03 Jun 2012 05:09 PM PDT
Earlier this week, ASUS took some time to go ahead and create a rather obscure video for what they will be presenting at this week's Computex 2012 showcase in Taipei, though they forgot to include anything relevant in the video. Nothing Android was mentioned, nothing Windows was mentioned though it did manage to spark much conversation about a dual-booting Android Windows 8 tablet. As it seems now, it was to highlight their partnership with BlueStacks as the company has issued a press release fully announcing the partnership. BlueStacks, as you know if you read our review, enables over 450,000 Android apps to run on Windows PCs and now, ASUS will be leveraging that power for their own PC ventures and including BlueStacks within their @vibe platform.
Together, ASUS and BlueStacks will be offering users of asus@vibe Android apps through their broad line of products including the ZenBooks, notebooks, Eee PCs, desktop PCs and All-in-one PCs. Pricing for it all seems rather wish washy at the moment as the press release notes, apps will be free for six months and then users can upgrade from there to unlimited apps and sync apps from phone to PC. For those of you out there hoping for some other sort of news though, there is still some hope we suppose. This all could only be one portion of something greater, just don't get too bummed out if this happens to all it was in the end.
