Vodafone UK pebble blue Galaxy S III now shipping

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 03:23 PM PDT

Android Central

Looks like the somewhat tardy "pebble blue" Galaxy S III is finally starting to see broader availability, after the first stock began arriving in Europe and Australia a couple of days ago. Today Vodafone UK has notified its pre-order customers that it's now fulfilling orders for the 16GB version of the delayed device. The network adds customers who pre-ordered before 7pm on May 29 will start receiving their phones from tomorrow, June 8. Unfortunately, the news on the 32GB version, which in the UK is exclusive to Vodafone, isn't quite so rosy --

We have now received stock of the pebble blue 16GB Samsung Galaxy SIII, all customers who pre-ordered this device before 7pm on Tuesday 29 May will start to receive their phones from tomorrow (8 June).

We’re continuing to work closely with Samsung to secure stock of the 32GB pebble blue Samsung Galaxy SIII as soon as possible, and will update this thread as soon as we have more information.

Nevertheless, some movement on a delayed product is better than none. If you've got a pebble blue S III on pre-order, be sure to hit the comments and let us know how you've been getting on.

Android A to Z: What is an IMEI?

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 02:54 PM PDT

IMEI

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique set of 15 digits used on GSM phones to identify them. Because the SIM card is associated with the user and can  be swapped from phone to phone, a method is needed to keep track of the hardware itself, and that's why the IMEI was developed. Math nerds will enjoy the way they are calculated -- the first 14 digits are decided by the GSM association, and the final check digit is computed using what's called the Luhn Formula -- crazy base-8 math that mere mortals like most of us don't understand, nor want to understand. You can see the IMEI of your Android phone by looking in settings > About phone if you're curious. (Or on the box if you still have it. Or under the battery or on the phone itself.

What is this number used for? That's the real question, isn't it. Like the MEID number on CDMA phones (think Sprint and Verizon), the IMEI is used for network control. It's not very common, but your mobile operator can block a phone based on it's IMEI in cases where it's been reported stolen or someone didn't pay the bill. Because it's not easy to change the IMEI of your phone (and maybe even illegal -- check your local laws) it's also used to keep track of phones that were involved in criminal activity, and the UK in particular has a handy database of phones used for these purposes. The IMEI number is also used to specify a phone for wiretapping by federal governments worldwide.

On a lighter note, Android apps can also use your IMEI number. The app will declare that it has access to your personal information, and the IMEI can be used to keep track of the device in a remote database. This sounds pretty scary, but it's an easy way (though not necessarily the best way) for app developers to keep a settings database online for your phone, in their app. Let's say you mark a bunch of favorites in a wallpaper app. Those favorites are kept in a small database file online, and when you reconnect to the app it reads your IMEI number to find your preferences. Not an ideal method, but it's easy.

One last thing -- now that we know a little more about IMEI numbers, they will soon be changing to IMEISV numbers. The use-case scenarios are the same, but the data structure and method of calculation is different. An IMEISV gets rid of the check digit (and its complicated Luhn formulated calculation) in favor of two digits used for software version numbering. Like everything else in the mobile space, network identification changes rapidly.

CrackBerry Kevin is on a Mobile Nations World Tour and going Android this month

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 01:55 PM PDT

Hello Android Central! In case you don't recognize the name, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Kevin Michaluk, aka CrackBerry Kevin, Founder and Editor in Chief of Android Central's sibling site, CrackBerry.com. Yes, I love BlackBerrys.

If you follow all the mobile news you'll know us BlackBerry fans are going through a bit of a dry spell right now, as we wait for BlackBerry 10 phones to hit the market later this year. In the meantime, I've decided to make productive use of this downtime by going on the first-ever Mobile Nations World Tour.

The premise? I'm going to visit all of the sites in our Mobile Nations network over the next few months and get close and personal with each mobile platform. Android. iOS. Windows Phone. Heck, even webOS for good measure. By the time this is over I hope to be an expert on each.

My first stop is Android Central and I've armed myself with an HTC One X (in white!). I've spent a few days now getting up and running with it -- my apologies to Phil for the onslaught of newbie questions -- and over the month of June I plan to really accelerate my learning. I'll need your help. Expect to see me in the forums, on Google+ and on twitter asking questions. If you have tips and suggestions for me, don't hold back!

Assuming Phil lets me, you may even see me write an article or two or make an appearance on an Android Central podcast. Oh what's that Phil? I can come on the show tonight? Well I guess we'll see you there!

I love music. I love live music. I love listening to live music outdoors. For Bonnaroo, however, I'll make an exception. Something about camping in BFE, Tenn., that just doesn't seem like a fun time to me anymore. The good news is that just like Coachella, YouTube's got us covered. Starting this Friday at 2 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. PDT), you can hit up three days of rock and rap and funk without the sweat and sleeplessness and funk, all from the comfort of your computer, smartphone or even your Google TV. This, folks, is how us old people rock these days. All you have to do is hit up youtube.com/bonnaroo to get your groove on. We'll see you there.

Oh, and stay away from the brown acid.

Motorola Droid Bionic owners are beginning to receive an official OTA update from Verizon, said to improve Bluetooth volume, Visual Voice Mail, and LTE connectivity. Version 5.9.905 doesn’t bring with it any drastic changes, but maintenance updates are never anything to scoff at. The forums are lighting up with folks who are already seeing the update push to their devices, though as always, it may take longer for some than others. Sit tight and be sure to yell out below when you get your spoonful.

LG Viper 4G LTE review

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 07:10 AM PDT

LG Viper 4G LTE

A mid-range phone packing LTE for Sprint's as-of-yet-unlaunched network - is it worth the investment?

The LG Viper 4G LTE is an interesting phone. (For starters, that name is long. It'll hereto be referenced as simply the LG Viper.) It's not an ultra-high end, mind-blowing, earth-shattering, missile-launching superphone, but it wasn't built to be. It also combines some of the latest features a phone the the Now Network can have, like NFC (paired with Google Wallet) and LTE radios for when Sprint's LTE network goes live.

And it's all targeted towards parents. That's not to say you need a kid to buy one, but if you have one, well, LG made this phone for you. It's reasonably sized, tough, and still powerful enough to do most of what you could ask of it.

To echo sentiments expressed before, it's absolutely crazy to think the specs on this phone are mid-range at best. I still remember a time when a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor was the hottest thing on the market, so don't immediately write off the LG Viper for specs like that. Come showtime, it performs.

Join us after the break and we'll have a nice, thorough look at how LG's LTE offering stands up against the rest.

Acer debuts A110 7-inch tablet, Tegra 3, ICS and sub-$200

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 06:57 AM PDT

Android Central

All the talk over at Computex 2012 in Taipai has surrounded the army of new Windows 8 and Windows RT devices, and Acer is one of the OEM's showcasing their efforts. However, snuck in between the Windows devices, is the new Iconia Tab A110.

The A110 is a 7-inch Android tablet, running Android 4.0 over an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary there then. An Acer representative at the show though, said that the company will be pushing the A110 as their main low-end device in Q3 this year. Price -- less than $200. If true, this is a quad-core, fully featured Android tablet for Kindle Fire money.

We've previously heard about the Nvidia Kai programme to bring low priced Tegra devices to market. While no-one would confirm this is to be one of those devices, it sure sounds possible.

Ice Cream Sandwich is barely touched on the A110, though it sounds like it suffers from the same poor viewing angles as its predecessor, the A100.

Also on display at the Acer booth, another new Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, the A210. Packing similar specs to the A110, the A210 comes with a 10.1-inch 1280x800 display. Additionally, both tablets pack 1GB of RAM, a microSD card slot and a solitary camera on the front face. The A110 will come with a HDMI out port with dual-display support, and the A210 has a full sized USB port along with the possibility of 3G data connectivity.

O2 UK and Vodafone announce infrastructure sharing agreement

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 03:54 AM PDT

Android Central

In news that sounds more exciting than it actually is, British mobile networks O2 and Vodafone have announced an agreement to combine and share their existing 2G, 3G and (eventually) 4G network infrastructure. The country's second and third-largest network operators plan to create a nationwide "grid" upon which each company's network will run. Unlike competing operator Everything Everywhere, formed by a merger of Orange and T-Mobile UK, Vodafone and O2 will continue to operate separate, competing networks in the UK. It's important to note that this is absolutely not a merger of the two networks -- such a deal would never be allowed by British regulators.

The most interesting part of the deal concerns the roll-out of 4G LTE services on the two networks. Voda and O2 say the agreement to build a grid underpinning both networks will allow them to deploy 4G services more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Again, the networks themselves will remain separate, and the operators will continue to deliver competing services and price plans. The only differences, the companies say, will be in how quickly we see 4G sites being lit up following the (much delayed) 800MHz/2600MHz spectrum auction.

To oversee all this, a new 50/50 venture between O2 and Vodafone will be formed to manage the newly-consolidated infrastructure. This will consist of 18,500 sites, which the companies say represents a 40% increase for both networks. O2 will oversee "design, management and maintenance" of the sites making up the new grid in the east of the UK, while Vodafone will take up these responsibilities in the west.

So what does this mean? Again, this isn't a merger of two mobile networks, as we saw when T-Mobile and Orange formed Everything Everywhere a few years back. O2 and Vodafone (and their customer-facing networks) will remain separate, this is merely an expansion of their existing network sharing agreement. As such, there'll be no Everything Everywhere-style cross-roaming agreement to allow Vodafone customers to roam on O2, or vice-versa. Instead, the sharing will be done at the infrastructure level on both networks.

If all goes to plan, it'll mean better reception for those in areas with poor O2 coverage, but a strong Vodafone signal, or vice-versa. And in the future, it's hoped it'll help both operators establish  4G LTE networks covering more of the country more quickly -- up to 98% of Brits by the end of 2015, according to estimates.

Vodafone and O2 are currently in talks with British communications regulator Ofcom, and hope to press ahead with their new network sharing plans later in the year, assuming everything's approved.

Logitech Revue Android 3.2 update has gone live, bug fixes aplenty

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:02 AM PDT

Logitech Revue

Earlier we mentioned that there was an update to the Sony Google TV rolling out and with that announcement also came the info that an update to the Logitech Revue was on the way as well. At the time, there was not mention of what it may be or when it could be expected but as we now know, it has come fairly quickly and has brought along plenty of bug fixes with it as well. As noted from Logitech:

  • Fix for 1-way keyboard controller pairing failures
  • Fix for locking/freezing at EULA screen.
  • New Logitech Help Assistant application.
  • Fix for links within the Logitech legal documents not able to be navigated via Directional pad on the keyboard controller.
  • Fix for Picture-In-picture not resuming audio, when back from Pandora.
  • Fix for Wrong error message when Price/Quality produce no matches in TV&Moves.
  • Netflix application update.
  • Fix for Netflix - application crash with ERROR_SIGSEGV - GDL_ERR_NO_MEMORY
  • Fix for Netflix - unable to play Netflix content after update
  • Fix for Netflix - application exits unexpectedly: EXITED_SIGSEGV - max retries on ISS.mem file
  • Fix for Netflix - user receives an error saying that their account has been deactivated when no deactivation operation has been performed
  • Fix for Netflix  'Are you a Netflix Member’ sign out error.
  • Fix for cursor is missing in the search field.

Time to fire up your Revue and get the update for yourself. Keep in mind though, we have no idea if there is any sort of roll out sequence here so you'll just have to keep checking for updates until it shows up for you. Plus, as noted in the image above there seems to be more changes within than what Logitech has noted. Make sure you drop by our Google TV forums and let us know how things are going with the update after you get it installed.

Late-night poll: What are you most excited about seeing at Google I/O 2012?

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 11:20 PM PDT

Google io

Google I/O starts in just 20 days, and it's time to begin all the speculation about what we expect to see. Rumors have a 7-inch tablet as a lock, and there's new Google TVs and Chromebooks to show off, and some of us expect to see Google at Home revisited.

Or maybe all of the above.

They did push things to an extra day this year, so that's 33-percent more we can hear and see. We'll be there, cameras and ears going to show you what we can, and much of it Google will be posting online, as it happens. It's a good time to be an Android geek. What are you excited about seeing at Google I/O? Shout out in the poll and the comments.

HTC One V arriving on TELUS June 8th

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 08:51 PM PDT

HTC One V

Although the device has been available on their "budget" brand Koodoo Mobile for a while now, TELUS themselves are preparing to launch the HTC One V come June 8th. As we learned in our review of the device, HTC has gone back to their roots with the HTC One V making it an entry-level throwback to the HTC Legend and we mean that lovingly. With it, you'll be getting Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), a 1GHz single-core Qualcomm processor, 512MB RAM and finally 4GB of built-in storage should you decide to pick one up. Right now, TELUS pricing looks a little something like this:

  • No-term: $289.99
  • 1-year contact: $229.99
  • 2-year contract: $189.99
  • 3-year contract: $29.99

Those numbers are of course subject to change until the official announcement comes from TELUS but they seem quite reasonable all things considered. Make sure you check out the full review we did up if this one is on your radar and we'll be sure to let you all know when it goes official.

Flipboard for Android gets update to version 1.8.4 beta 2

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:08 PM PDT

Android Central

Development continues apace for Flipboard for Android, as the app has been updated to version 1.8.4 beta 2. The latest version is a relatively minor update, bringing bug fixes and a handful of new features to the digital magazine app.  Sharing via Android's built-in "share" API is a welcome addition, and we're always partial to the occasional performance improvement, though we've experienced no slowdown in the app so far.

Here's the full change log for Flipboard version 1.8.4 beta 2 --

  • Added sharing via other applications
  • Fixed authentication bug which could cause repeated logins
  • Remember the position in a section if you accidentally leave it
  • Improved stability and performance

Samsung Galaxy S III owners and beta participants on other phones can grab the 2.5MB update to the latest version by firing up the app as usual -- you should get an update notification like the one in the photo above.
