Official VLC app teased for Android

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:50 AM PDT

For all the various media types and codecs that our Android smartphones and tablets are able to handle, it's still nothing compared to VLC media player.  As our favorite way of watching movies and videos on our desktops, we've long pined for an official Android client.  Long, as in years...That day appears to be drawing near, according to a recent tweet from its developers, VideoLan.

While there are a number of VLC-related apps in the Google Play store, none of them are official, nor are they the experience for which we've been holding out. Let's hope that they've finished this app up and are uploading to Google Play in short order.

Respect knuckles to SL2021 for passing along

LG puts brakes on tablets for time being

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:16 AM PDT

LG, somewhat following HTC's lead, has decided that they will be putting the brakes on tablet development for the time being.  Given that devices such as the G-Slate and Optimus Pad LTE have failed to gain much attention, LG believes they would be better served investing in smartphones. We couldn't agree with their decision more as the current market is full of players and there's yet to be one proven way to grab share.

Perhaps the time to reconsider tablets will be once things level off a bit and the price wars yield a few solid winners. Maybe the Google Nexus 7 tablet can jump start things at the $200 price range and show consumers that there's more for your tablet money than a Kindle Fire.  We've always liked LG's higher-end smartphone designs and appreciate how they push hardware boundaries so we're hoping to see an eventual return to tablets.

ZTE debuts Grand X LTE for Europe, Asia Pacific

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 08:01 AM PDT

ZTE has today announced their first Android smartphone with single-chip LTE (Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, integrated LTE chipset) support in the form of the Grand X LTE. Expected to hit Europe and Asia Pacific markets in the third quarter, the handset runs Android 4.0 and features a buttonless design.  Hardware is pretty sharp with a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 8-megapixel camera (1080p HD video), and front-facing camera capable of handling 720p HD video calls.

"We are the first company to use the single-chip solution in a handset," said Mr. He Shiyou, Executive Vice President, and Head of the Terminal Handset Division, ZTE. "The Grand series products are our high-end flagship offerings this year. ZTE aims to enhance its profile in the high-end market with the Grand series of smart terminals."

There's no mention of the Grand X LTE coming to the United States however we'd be surprised if we didn't see something that somewhat resembles the design.  With a steadily growing push into the U.S. market, Sprint might make a good fit for the handset.

Official WinZip client arrives for Android

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 07:04 AM PDT

The official WinZip application for Android has arrived in the Google Play Store and it works exactly as you would expect.  The free client is very much in line with its desktop counterpart, supports for encrypted files (including AES128, AES256), and promises secure viewing and transmission of sensitive data.  A handy feature that we really appreciate is the ability to copy unzipped content to your clipboard  for pasting into email or another apps.

The list of supported file types is about a mile long and includes nearly every document you use on a daily basis. In some instances, WinZip uses third party apps to open up other apps.

  • Photos and images (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .gif)
  • Text files (.rtf, .csv, .txt, .ini, .inf, .bat, .js, .log, .xml, .css, .java, .cs, .h, .m, .cpp, .c, .sql, .properties)
  • Web files (.htm, .html, .jsp, .asp)
  • Apk files (.apk)
  • WinZip for Android works with 3rd-party apps to open:
    • Word documents (.doc, .docx)
    • Excel spreadsheets (.xls, .xlsx)
    • PowerPoint presentations (.ppt, .pptx)
    • PDF files (.pdf)

Download WinZip for your Android phone or tablet today!

HTC Evo 4G LTE having issues with Google Wallet

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:52 AM PDT

Have one of the new Evo 4G LTE devices? If you do, chances are, you've been having issues with Google Wallet. Lockouts and inability to install the app at all are the name of the game. Errors claim that the device is unsupported and the app can't be installed in the user's country... even though the device was supported before, and the devices are in the good ole' U.S. of A..

Requests for support have been getting the following:

Hello xxx,

Thank you for calling Google Wallet. You called us regarding being unable

to access the Google Wallet app on your HTC Evo.

Google Wallet is temporarily unavailable on your device and our
engineering team is working hard to make sure Google Wallet is working as
intended. We will be sure to let you know when full functionality has
resumed.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

It was a pleasure assisting you today. Feel free to contact us again if
you have any additional questions regarding Google Wallet or visit our
Help Center at Wallet Help

Sincerely,

Michelle
The Google Wallet Team

Some are speculating that the blockage could be intentional via Sprint, who is planning their own Google Wallet alternative, Touch Wallet. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Google may be accelerating development of their own voice assistant program

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:44 AM PDT

It goes without saying: Apple's Siri is one of the main selling points of iOS. It just works, and it just works well. We know also that Google has been working on their own voice assistant in the Google X Lab. Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, Google is speeding up their development of their voice assistant to compete.

The WSJ says that Google is "accelerating plans to launch its own Siri competitor", which would give us Android users something in-hand soon.... maybe by the end of the year? Rumors surrounding Google's "Assistant' state that the application would be more like Star Trek's Computer than an app to look up news and weather. Beam us up, Scotty.

With Google IO coming up, perhaps we'll find out more in the coming days. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Sharp introduces Feel UX, could actually be useful

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:25 AM PDT

Ever wondered what a threesome between Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 would look like? Well, something like the new skin Sharp just introduced for its Japanese phones dubbed 'Feel UX'. Feel looks nothing like stock Android, but it's not a clone of another operating system, either.

Instead, it offers a beautiful and customizable lockscreen and an interesting take on the app drawer. There is no homescreen, just an app drawer. Swipe to the right, and you'll find a Metro-like list of widgets and another tab to the right there's a bunch of customizable shortcuts. Enough chatter, take a look in the video below:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The features in a nutshell:

  • Personalized and innovative lock-screen experience, allowing users to browse photos and widgets without unlocking the devices
  • Real-time weather display motion experience and animation
  • Desirable, gender-neutral palette and visuals
  • Streamlined, curated home space to smoothly manage applications, widgets, and shortcuts

Cyanogenmod 9 nightlies reach the Galaxy S III

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 05:21 AM PDT

We knew it was only a matter of time for the Galaxy S III to get some official Cyanogenmod love, and here it is: the first official Cyanogenmod 9 builds from Teamhacksung have been rolled out to Samsung's new flagship. The buglist is noticably short and minor: the FM-radio doesn't work, the camera tends to FC every now and then, the device doesn't wake up using the volume keys and audio in calls doesn't work properly. That was it.

We already installed Cyanogenmod 9 on our device, and the buglist doesn't lie: Everything works and is smooth as butter, except for the calling audio. The mic works, but the earpiece is not working and the speaker sounds distorded, which is quite surprising, given the fact that it took almost a half year of nightlies for the Galaxy S II to reach this point. So, if the new Touchwiz was holding you back or preventing you from buying the Galaxy S III, moan no more!

Fans of the new Cyanogenmod-alternative called AOKP can rejoice too, their favorite ROM is available as well.
