Indie Gala Offers Four Pack of Games At a Price of Your Choosing

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 01:03 PM PDT

Indie Gala offering is a four pack of games that’s available for sale now.  The cool thing is that the price you pay is up to you.  You can pay as little as $4.  This is a fantastic deal, here’s what you get:

  • Great Little War Game
  • Cardinal Quest
  • Smiles HD
  • Legends of Yore
Another cool thing is that if you pay more than the average amount ($4.57 right now) you’ll also get Turba, Pittri 1977, and Manor of the Damned as well.  You’ll also get the PC version of the games as a bonus.  Not a bad deal for 7 games, and you can choose to send the money to The Italian Red Cross or Able Gamers charities as well.

Supporting indie devs is important, some of the best games in the past few years have been put out by small companies, and it never hurts to show that Android is a profitable market for devs to write for.

Hit the source to get the deal, don’t t let this one go by!

Google+ coming to Flipboard soon

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 10:24 AM PDT

We’re still waiting for Google+ integration with other apps. It’s vital that Google shares its API if it wants Google+ to compete with the likes of Facebook. Well we have some good news as Bradley Horowitz, Vice President of Product Management of Google+ announced Flipboard as a “trusted” partner. The Google+ API will allow Flipboard users to comment, +1 Flipboard items, and send individualized pieces of content to Google+ Circles. "It works like it should," said Horowitz, "Flipboard has done an amazing job. "

At this point there was no information on when we can expect to see this Google+ functionality, but it should hopefully be sometime this year or hopefully when it leaves the Beta stage for Android.

Flipboard joins Buddy Media, Hootsuite, Context Optional, Hearsay Social, Involver and Vitrue as “trusted” Google+ partners. As to when Google will open its API to the public, we’re hoping that will be announced at next week’s Google I/O.

ZTE announces the Grand X LTE, their first single-chip smartphone

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 07:11 AM PDT

ZTE just announced the Grand X LTE. Yes I know another Android phone so what makes this one so special? Well this one only needs one chip. It sports the Qualcomm MSM8960, which makes it their first single-chip phone. It’s something ZTE takes seriously, but I doubt anyone will run out and buy it for this reason through.

Anyways, the rest of the specs aren’t too shabby as it comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, an 8MP rear camera that supports 1080p, a front-facing camera supporting 720p, a 1900 mAh battery, and of course Android 4.0.

We don’t know about pricing, but as far as availability goes, it should hit Europe and the Asia Pacific in the third quarter.

Full press release after the break:

ZTE Launches Grand X LTE (T82), Company’s First Single-Chip LTE Smartphone

Product to be available in APAC and Europe in Q3 2012

CommunicAsia2012
SINGAPORE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, announced the launch of the company’s first single-chip LTE smartphone, the Grand X LTE (T82), at CommunicAsia2012.

“We are the first company to use the single-chip solution in a handset”
The Grand X LTE (T82) will be available in Asia Pacific and Europe in third quarter 2012.

The Grand X LTE (T82) phone uses the latest MSM8960 chip from Qualcomm, which is based on advanced 0.28nm technology. When compared to most phone models available in the marketplace, the single-chip model is faster and more energy efficient.

The Grand X LTE (T82) is WiFi capable and uses Android 4.0. It has a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, an 8 mega-pixel main camera that supports 1080p HD video shooting and playback and a front camera that supports 720p HD video calls. The phone has a maximum download rate of 100M, and a 1900mAh large-capacity battery. The Grand X LTE (T82) also has a unique buttonless design resembling a mini tablet PC.

“We are the first company to use the single-chip solution in a handset,” said Mr. He Shiyou, Executive Vice President, and Head of the Terminal Handset Division, ZTE. “The Grand series products are our high-end flagship offerings this year. ZTE aims to enhance its profile in the high-end market with the Grand series of smart terminals.”

In addition to the Grand X LTE (T82), ZTE is also displaying other LTE products at CommunicAsia. These include the V96A LTE tablet; the world’s first TD-LTE/EDGE multi-band UFi product, the MF91; and the MF821 LTE wireless network card.

The V96A will be available in Europe and Asia Pacific in third quarter 2012.

ZTE began investing heavily in LTE devices in 2008. The company now holds 7 per cent of all global LTE patents among vendors. In addition, ZTE recently won the Best LTE Device Award at the LTE World Summit 2012, the highest industry honor in that field. All ZTE LTE terminal products displayed at CommunicAsia2012 will also appear at the Mobile Asia Expo 2012 on June 20-22 in Shanghai.

“The telecommunications sector is changing rapidly,” said Mr. He. “LTE is growing very fast in Asia and ZTE emphasizes technological development in this area. We believe 4G communications provides a tremendous opportunity for the telecommunications industry in Asia.”

Google, ASUS Set To Unveil The 7-Inch Nexus Tablet At Google I/O, Expected To Be Priced At $199

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:41 AM PDT

Well folks, it looks like we’re getting closer and closer to seeing Google’s Nexus tablet a reality. We were among the first to tell you that Google planned on introducing its tablet at Google I/O next week, but now we have some additional details adding to this excitement. According to DigiTimes, the Nexus tablet will drop in at 7-inches, feature a WiFi-only connection and will only feature a front-facing camera for a budget-friendly price of only $199. Software-wise, we won’t know what OS the device will come preloaded with (though speculation points directly at Jelly Bean)— but DigiTimes confirms the device will feature Google’s own Chrome Browser. While we already see plenty of signs that ASUS would have a hand in the Nexus tablet’s development, it is also believed that Quanta Computer will be playing a part in the manufacturing of the device.

It looks as if Google is full steam ahead too with bringing Nexus tablets to stores. DigiTimes adds:

“The 7-inch Nexus tablet PC already started shipping in June and is estimated to be available in the retail channel in July with the device’s total shipments expected to reach at least three million units in the second half of the year”.

Well folks, if DigiTimes is correct, it looks like we’ll be seeing something special very soon. We’ll find out soon enough as Google and Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih are slated to announce the tablet at Google I/O next week.

Google receives patent for Project Glass trackpad

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:39 AM PDT

A few weeks ago Sergey Brin was on the Gavin Newsom Show showing off his Project Glass prototype. If you remember, he was using a physical trackpad for navigation. Well Google just received a patent on it.

They actually call it a finger-tracking input sensor and here is how they describe it:

In another embodiment, the input device may include a touch-sensitive pad configured to sense at least one of a position and movement of a finger along a planar direction relative to a surface of the input device via capacitive sensing, resistance sensing, and/or via a surface acoustic wave (SAW) process. In yet another embodiment, the input device may be an optical imaging device and the surface of the optical imaging device a lens provided at an outer surface of the optical imaging device. By capturing images many times per second, the optical imaging device can accurately detect a position and movement of a finger along a planar direction relative to the lens surface of the input device.

Interestingly enough Google filed for the patent five days before going on the show.

LG says no to tablet development in favor of smartphones

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:26 AM PDT

The tablet market for Android has gotten out of control with so many choices that it’s going to be awful tough to stand out in the crowd if you’re an Android manufacturer. LG recognizes this and is taking a step back with tablet development.

"We've decided to put all new tablet development on the back burner for the time being in order to focus on smartphones," Ken Hong, a spokesman for Seoul-based LG, said in an e-mailed response to queries.

Right now LG is the No. 4 mobile phone maker so why not try to leverage that? As far as tablets go, they really didn’t have much success with the Optimus Pad or Optimus Pad LTE. I think this makes perfect sense for LG as I personally would like to see better phones from them.

On another note regarding the newly unveiled Microsoft Surface tablet, Hong did say "LG doesn't see Surface competing with anything we're focusing on at the moment."

AT&T, T-Mobile GSIII ICS Open Source Files Now Available

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:25 AM PDT

For those of you wanting to tinker with the ICS source files for the AT&T and T-Mobile Galaxy S III, I have some good news for you. Samsung just dropped the source for the SGH-I7474M and the SGH-T999V, and can be downloaded through the links below. It’s nice to see that Sammy is keeping their source codes up to date and is offering them before the devices actually launch. I wonder if this means the Verizon version of the source is just around the corner?
