CyanogenMod 9 RC1 now released for dozens of devices

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:08 PM PDT

CM9, the latest, most anticipated release of CyanogenMod to date, has been released out of beta and into RC1 (Release Candidate1). The ROM is out now for 37 devices. According to the official CM website:

It wasn't quick or easy, but we are extremely proud of this release and what it represents for us as a group. The jump from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 in many ways was a fresh start for this project, and as much as the code changed, the structure and organization of CM as a whole changed as well. It meant a lot of hard work, and late nights, but also a ton of fun. We are in this for the challenge, and the reward is always the satisfaction received when we release it to the masses as a 'stable' product. This RC1 brings us a step forward toward that payoff.

As we've mentioned before, this release serves as the first wave of RC1′s. With the 'core' OS stabilized, our device maintainers will continue to work on their device trees to bring up more devices, this includes some of the newer releases as well as some from the older generations; but we'll save that for another day.

If you want to know if your device is on the list for the RC1 release, be sure to hit up this link and search for your device, making sure the download says "RC1". Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Google Music now keeps trashed tracks, allows you to undelete for 28 days

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 10:38 AM PDT

Any users out there using Google Music? I can tell you this: I personally use the heck out of it. Having as many digital tracks as I do, having a cloud-based system to stream down my music is great. Now, Google has announced a change to their music service.

The service now includes a new trash folder that lets you undelete your music for up to 28 days after you pull the trigger. If you don't want your stash just sitting in the trash, however, you can also permanently delete them manually.

So, if you accidentally delete a song, hit up your trash folder. But remember, 28 days later, they become music zombies. (zing)

Vizio announces new Co-Star Google TV box at $99 with OnLive gaming support

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 09:56 AM PDT

Earlier today, we told you about the revamp of the Google TV home page, complete with new landing page and "How It Works" instructions. We also mentioned a new Google TV device directly from Sony - the NSZ-GS7 - which has our attention for sure. Now, however, we've got a new player in the ever-increasing GTV game: Vizio. Known for their affordable HD televisions, the company has now announced the new Co-Star. The Co-Star will be available in July, and will sell for $99. Here's another thing, though: the new box will have OnLive streaming game service. Why is this worth noting, aside from the fact that it exists in the first place? $99 is the exact price tag of the OnLive MicroConsole, also sold by Vizio. Choosing between the two, which would you go for? We can answer that pretty easily.

The Co-Star includes:

  • 1080p video over HDMI
  • 802.11n wireless
  • USB port for storage and peripherals
  • Bluetooth remote has a QWERTY keyboard on its reverse side
  • OnLive
  • Support for the standard streaming video services including NetFlix, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube
  • Flash-enabled Google Chrome browser
  • DLNA

Also, thanks to the new ARM processor, the price actually undercuts the original Logitech Revue. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon SDK for Android at Uplinq Developers Conference

SDK Designed to Give Developers Access to Powerful Features Found in Snapdragon-powered Devices -

SAN DIEGO, June 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced the Snapdragon™ SDK for Android at the Uplinq® 2012 developers conference, giving developers and device makers the ability to differentiate their applications on devices by exposing a new set of value-added features.  A preview release of the SDK is now available on Qualcomm's developer site and the full SDK will be available to device manufacturers and developers in the coming months.

The Snapdragon SDK for Android enables mobile developers to access next-generation technology and features of Snapdragon processors via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) not otherwise available. Initially, the SDK will support devices with the Snapdragon S4 8960 processor, and it is anticipated that the SDK will support future Snapdragon processors across multiple tiers over time.

"The most powerful applications in mobile are those that are tightly integrated with the underlying hardware," said Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Internet Services and the company's senior vice president for software strategy. "Qualcomm is always striving to enable developers and device makers to differentiate their offerings via the unique capabilities found in its industry-leading Snapdragon mobile processors. With the Snapdragon SDK for Android, developers and manufactures can now more easily utilize these features as they work to set their products apart in a crowded ecosystem."

The Snapdragon SDK for Android is designed to allow developers to harness the additional capabilities of devices with Snapdragon processors while retaining compatibility across multiple Android devices. Together with the latest hardware development devices, including the Snapdragon S4 MDP smartphone and the Snapdragon S4 MDP tablet, developers will be able to develop on-target with a suite of Snapdragon SDK capabilities, allowing for testing and debugging in advance of commercial handset releases.

Some of the new features and benefits of the Snapdragon APIs in the preview release of the SDK include:

  • facial processing, such as blink and smile detection, which makes it easier to take better pictures of people in groups;
  • burst capture, which leverages zero shutter lag to photograph a stream of images at once to select the best shot;
  • surround sound recording for better audio capture;
  • hardware echo cancellation for better real-time audio experiences;
  • sensor gestures (tap-left/tap-right, push/pull, face-up/face-down, tilt) that enable developers and device makers to push the envelope on new, differentiated user interfaces;
  • low power always on geofencing capabilities; and
  • indoor location that enables apps to continue providing accurate location information even when the user is indoors.

Developers can learn more about the Snapdragon SDK for Android at the Qualcomm Developer Network website or by following @Qualcomm_Dev on Twitter for the latest information and news with the SDK.

HTC Evo 3D ICS update comes to EMEA, Sprint users left wanting it too

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:22 AM PDT

So, you have an Evo 3D, and you want your ICS update? Good news! You've got it! As long as you live in Europe, the Middle East, or Asia, that is. HTC has rolled out the update to the EMEA market, yet US Sprint customers are left in the dark.

The update itself is about 300MB, and includes HTC Sense 3.6... which is at least something, but doesn't hold a candle to Sense 4.0.

There's no word yet as to when Sprint users here in the states are expected to see the same rollout. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

Pinterest for Android may finally be announced at Google I/O

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:52 AM PDT

The popular website Pinterest has been noticeably absent for Android users for some time. Now, according to reports, we may be seeing an appearance by the online giant at Google I/O, and users are excited to hear it.

Pinterest is officially one of the sandbox attendees listed for Google I/O this week, and its pretty safe to say they wouldn't be attending if they didn't really have something to announce. While Pinterest has responded to speculation saying they are "excited about the Android platform and are working hard on building a great app. However, we don't have plans to announce anything @ I/O", this editor is guessing that they're merely trying to keep things under wraps.

Just Sunday, Ausdroid reported the fact that Pinterest was slated to be at I/O. In that very article, the screenshot that was snagged by Ausdroid shows Pinterest as "now available for Android":

While this is all speculation at this point, we find it pretty likely that pinterest is trying to save up the hype for the conference itself. Their response, as always, is:

We're working on a dedicated Android app. We know lots of folks are eager to see one, so when we feel we're in the final stages of its development, we'll be sure to share more information.

Google TV site gets revamped, Google I/O will probably see some GTV love

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:29 AM PDT

During last week's podcast, we talked about what we were expecting to see at Google I/O this year. One of the predictions from yours truly was that we would see some Google TV love, and that Google wasn't anywhere near ready to give up that baby. Fast forward to yesterday, and Sony announced a new Google TV set-top box, which looks  really cool. Now, The whole Google TV site has gotten an overhaul, and we're starting to think that Google is trying to dig this platform up from its proverbial ashes and get it back on track.

The site overhaul includes a new landing page, along with some descriptions as to how GTV functions. A page dubbed "How It Works" goes further, explaining the differences between what we all know as Google TV and a new "buddy box" style.

To go along with all of this, the site is now displaying some Google TV hardware, including the previously mentioned Sony internet Player (NSZ-GS7); the Logitech Revue, however, is noticeably absent. Logitech's revue has been, since inception, one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get hooked up to Google TV. With it not showing on the page, this is just another sign that Google is trying to move on from what people traditionally know as Google TV and step the platform up to a new level.
