CyanogenMod 9 Release Candidate 1 available now for 37 different devices

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 02:00 PM PDT

CyanogenMod 9

As of today, June 26, it has officially been 225 days since Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, has hit the Android Open Source Project repository. Manufacturers have been tweaking the update for their various devices, carriers have been hard at work adding apps and testing reliability for consumer handsets, and custom alternative software developers have been perfecting their own personal flavor of ICS with more ROMs than you can shake a stick at. Today marks a milestone for one of the more popular ROM developers, as team CyanogenMod has just announced the release of CM9, Release Candidate 1, for 37 different devices.

Yes, you read that right. CyanogenMod 9 RC1 has officially debuted on 37 devices including the Galaxy Nexus (GSM, Sprint and Verizon), Motorola Xoom, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, ASUS Transformer, Transformer Prime and Transformer Pad.

In case you aren’t familiar with CyanogenMod ROMs, CyanogenMod is a totally clean, bloatware-free build of stock Android, with a handful of helpful tweaks and customization options. CyanogenMod is well known for being one of the fastest, stablest custom ROMs available. I’ve been using a CM9 Nightly (experimental test) build on my GSM Galaxy Nexus without any problems at all. With the white theme I have set up, along with the color adjustments and built-in notification shade settings shortcuts, I don’t think I could switch back to stock Ice Cream Sandwich if I wanted to.

To see if you’re device has made the release candidate list, head on over to Get.CM now. If you’d rather wait for the stable, official release of CyanogenMod 9, it should be available any time now.

Google I/O 2012: Jelly Bean statue hits the Googleplex front lawn

Can you feel the excitement in the air? Google I/O is just one day away now, and the blogosphere is quivering in anticipation. We’re not entirely sure what Google has prepared for us, but thanks to a yearly tradition that dates all the way back to Cupcake, or Android 1.5, we know it will definitely involve jelly beans.

That’s right, firmly planted in the ground outside of Building 44 at the Googleplex, you’ll now find a bright, colorful Jelly Bean statue, signaling the arrival of the next major release of Android.

Expected to release alongside the Nexus 7 tablet, Android 4.1 ( or so we believe it will be called) will for the most part be a refinement release. Ice Cream Sandwich brought with it more changes than any single update so far. Jelly Bean will, more or less, work to smooth those features out. A tweaked Google search bar, a redesigned Google Play app. Things like that. Of course Google undoubtedly has some surprises in store for us, but don’t expect them to drop Holo or anything drastic like that.

If you want to watch the unveiling of Jelly Bean unfold right before your very eyes, Google will be live streaming the entire I/O keynote starting tomorrow at 12:30 PM EST (9:30 AM PST). If you can’t make the keynote, fear not. We’ll have all the I/O coverage you can handle right here on Android and Me.

SIM unlock the HTC One S for free with root exploit

It’s a known fact that rooting Android handsets allows users to unlock a phone’s hidden potential, but now root access can also be used to SIM unlock the HTC One S without relying on your service provider or a third-party.

A while back, HTC Sensation owners realized that HTC included the SIM unlock code for their devices within the /dev/block/mmcblk0p6 block. Since then, HTC has changed a few things and “encrypted the actual SIM unlock code by adding a key generated from the phone's IMEI number.” In order to generate the SIM unlock code for the HTC One S, users must use their phone’s IMEI number to calculate the encryption key, subtract that number from the UN_Lock_clode to generate the phone’s SIM unlock code.

If multiple sets of numbers get you all flustered, developers have come up with a Bash Script which fully automates the entire process without the need for any fancy calculations.

Obtain HTC One S SIM unlock code with Bash Script

  1. Root your HTC One S
  2. Download Bash Script zip file
  3. Extract unlock.sh file from zip to /system/ folder on HTC One S
  4. execute the .sh file directly from root explorer or open terminal emulator and run:
    su <enter>
    /system/unlock.sh <enter>

SIM unlock the HTC One S

  1. Once SIM unlock code displays on screen(also saved to /sdcard/sim_unlock_code.txt), write the number down and turn off your HTC One S
  2. Remove the microSIM card from phone
  3. Insert a microSIM card from another service provider and turn the HTC One S back on
  4. When prompted, enter the SIM unlock code
  5. Enjoy your HTC One S on any GSM service provider of your choice.

While this root exploit can be used to get a free SIM unlock code for those with a rooted HTC One S, there are a few other options for those who don’t want to root their device. T-Mobile and most other service providers will give customers an unlock after they have owned the phone for 90 days. If you’re not willing to wait that long, you can always buy a SIM unlock code for the HTC One S for only $12.95 from third-part sources like HTC SIM Unlock.
