Lenovo LePhone K860 leaked with Samsung Exynos quad-core processor

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:32 PM PDT

Lenovo has impressed us a lot of times in past by launching devices like the IdeaPad and the beautiful LePhone. Now it seems they are getting ready to shock us again, and this time by launching a quad-core device which will be known as Lenovo LePhone K860. It will be rocking the same Samsung Exynos quad-core processor we saw on the Galaxy S III and Meizu MX. The device was spotted in China, and rumor has it that it will be launched in China sometime in August - though no words on when it will hit other parts of the world.

Along with the Samsung Exynos 1.4GHz quad-core processor, it will be running on Ice Cream Sandwich with a 5 inch HD display, 8MP camera with LED flash, 2MP front-facing camera for video chatting, 1GB of RAM, and only 4GB of ROM. It doesn't look huge in the pics, but you can consider it somewhere close to the Galaxy Note in size.

Well, if the device hits your country, would you mind picking it up? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Samsung Galaxy Note II to feature 5.5 Inch display, launching in September?

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 03:38 PM PDT

After the success of the Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung is now focused on their next Android monster, which is none other than the Galaxy Note II. We all are familiar with the fact that the Korean giant is cooking a device that's going to be huge and probably going to knock our socks off, but is it really worth waiting for? GSM-Arena is spilling some beans about it, confirming that it will feature a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display.

(It's a mock-up)

The display is slightly larger than the original Note, but the width is narrowed as compared to the predecessor. They are also reporting that the design is inspired by the Galaxy S III, just like Note was a "huge" version of the classy Galaxy S II. It was rumoured that the Note 2 will feature flexible display, though no confirmation on that.

Rumor was on the street that Samsung will launch it in October, but now they have changed their mind, as they are planning to launch it in September because Apple is coming up with the iPhone 5 in October, so Samsung don't like to arrive late at the show.

Anyway, who's looking forward to the Galaxy Note 2? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Carphone Warehouse to carry the Google Nexus 7 in UK

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 01:31 PM PDT

Yesterday Google Nexus 7 was officially announced during Google's largest event of the year. All Android fans were delighted because it's literally the cheapest yet the most powerful tablet available in the market, and just for $199. Now our readers and folks looking forward to the 7-inch monster in UK can rejoice because Carphone Warehouse has officially announced that they will launch the 16GB version of the Google Nexus 7 in UK for just £200.

Though we don't have any specific release date right now, but we will probably see it in the same period when it will be available on Google Play store (which is mid-July), so probably somewhere around July 20-25, I am sure it will be available at Carphone Warehouse for purchase.

Anyone in UK planning to grab the Google Nexus 7? Please tell us about it in the comment box below.

Apple pays $2.6m bond to halt Samsung Galaxy 10.1 sales in the US

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 10:45 AM PDT

Apple has posted the $2.6m bond requested by the courts when they won an injunction against Samsung to halt Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in the US. What does this mean? It means the injunction has now officially started, and if Samsung doesn't immediately sales, they could be sanctioned for contempt.

According to AppleInsider:

The $2.6 million bond posted by Apple is necessary to protect Samsung in the event that the Korean electronics maker appeals the injunction and succeeds. If the current injunction is found to have been improperly granted, Samsung could be awarded that money to compensate for any losses.

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

Jelly Bean Play Store [Download]

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 08:38 AM PDT

Among the myriad of announcements made during yesterdays keynote, there was the announcement of magazines and the ability to rent and purchase TV shows as well as movies in the Play Store. These were obviously much needed improvements if Google wants to actually make some money of off its zero percent profit Nexus 7.

This means there will be a new Play Store rolling out soon and coming with Jelly Bean next month, but for those of you that can't wait, you can download the new Play Store right now! I'm in the UK, and installing the apk leads to no change here, so if you reside outside of the US then you're out of luck.

Hopefully Google will launch Magazines and TV Shows (along with Music) outside the US soon, with no Kindle Fire outside the US yet the Nexus 7 will sell very well if advertised correctly and Google need to capitalize on that by having all it's services available to those consumers.

It looks like it works on most, if not all devices so grab it from the source below. As someone who can't experience the new services - let us know in the comments how it shapes up!

Run Android apps on your Mac with BlueStacks

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:43 AM PDT

If you've got a Mac and want to run Android apps on it, your time has come, you niche-lover. BlueStacks has come to Mac, and is supporting 17 different apps... to include the popular news reader "Pulse". Initially a Windows release, BlueStacks has now been dubbed by some to be "Parallels for Android", and runs natively on Mac OS X.

While seventeen apps may not be much compared to the total number of apps available, BlueStacks reports that more apps should be becoming compatible very soon. The company is also reporting that they're looking into hi-res options to work with the latest Retina Display Macs.

BlueStacks for Mac is currently in an alpha release, but that doesn't mean you can't pick it up right here. Watch out for bugs, though. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Google reportedly makes $0 profit off Nexus 7 sales

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:26 AM PDT

Yesterday, Google released their very first line of self-branded tablets, the Nexus 7. One of the biggest selling points is its cool price tag, but the question is - how do they get the price so low? Easy... according to Andy Rubin himself, Google makes no profit off of the Nexus 7.

That's right, folks. Google makes $0 in profit off of hardware sales for this beauty. Google will focus on making money through content sales, rather than on upfront pricing. It's a risky move, but Google is confident it's the right one. According to an interview with All Things D, Andy Rubin said:

"When it gets sold through the Play store, there's no margin, it just basically gets [sold] through"

In fact, Rubin said in the interview that Google is actually absorbing marketing costs for the tablet, meaning Google could theoretically end up losing money on each unit sale - depending on how the marketing campaign goes.

Rubin was asked if he thought this would put pressure on Google's Android partners, to which he replied, ""there is plenty of room left for Android tablet innovation".

Sprint flipping the switch on 4G LTE in select areas July 15th

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:08 AM PDT

Are you on Sprint? Do you have an LTE device? Good news, then... for some. Sprint has announced plans to turn on LTE on July 15th for the following areas:

  • Atlanta
  • Dallas
  • Houston (Yay!)
  • Kansas City
  • San Antonio

To add on to this, 3G speeds will also be improved, via Sprint's Network Vision program.

If you're in the dark on this rollout, don't worry - Sprint will be switching on LTE for more markets later in the year. Let us know what you think in the comments, and hit the break for the full press release.

27 June 2012

Sprint to Unleash the Speed and Power of 4G LTE in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio on July 15

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse announces that new network will deliver faster data speeds with 4G LTE and an improved overall 3G experience; Sprint brings an overall quality experience and unequaled value to customers

ATLANTA (BUSINESS WIRE), June 27, 2012 – As summer begins to sizzle, Sprint(NYSE:S) CEO Dan Hesse today invited Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio customers to harness the speed and power of 4G LTE on July 15 and to further enjoy the top-rated customer satisfaction experience among all national carriers, according to the 2012 American Customer Satisfaction Index.

To better meet the growing voice and data demands of wireless customers, Sprint is building an all-new, nationwide 3G and 4G LTE network through the Network Vision program. This means that whether a Sprint customer is using a smartphone to share a picture or to check the Web, Sprint 4G LTE will make it faster. Coupling the speed of 4G LTE with the industry's only truly unlimited data plan for smartphones makes Sprint the best choice in wireless.* Additionally, the new network provides significant enhancements to Sprint 3G service. Customers will experience better signal strength, fewer dropped/blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country.

"The performance of both the 4G LTE and improved 3G networks are exceeding our expectations and we are pleased with the progress of the entire Network Vision program," said Hesse.

With the launch on July 15, Sprint will have debuted 4G LTE to millions of people in five major metropolitan areas with more market launches in 2012 to be announced later this year. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have largely completed the build out of its all-new 4G LTE nationwide network – with an enhanced 3G network – covering 250 million people across the United States.

The Wireless Industry's Most Customer-Friendly Data Plans

In today's competitive wireless market, the value of unlimited has never been more apparent. Sprint's Everything Data plan with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM includes unlimited data, texting and calling to and from any mobile phone in America while on the Sprint network, starting at just $79.99 per month for smartphones.

Sprint continues the trend of delivering value to customers through its portfolio of 4G LTE-capable devices and unlimited data experience with Sprint Everything Data plans. Sprint has already launched five 4G LTE-capable devices for less than $200 – HTC EVO™ 4G LTE ($199.99); LG Viper™ 4G LTE ($99.99); Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($199.99); Samsung Galaxy S III ($199.99 for 16GB version) and Sierra Wireless™ 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot, the nation's first to support 4G LTE, 4G WiMAX and 3G ($99.99) (all pricing excludes taxes).

Over the past several years, Sprint has been working hard to deliver the best customer experience. Recently, the American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Sprint No. 1 among all national carriers and most improved in customer satisfaction, across all 47 industries, over the last four years. Building an all-new network is the linchpin to make Sprint the company customers want to do business with.

The launch of these metropolitan areas demonstrates the continued commitment by Sprint to invest in its network through Network Vision. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint's 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visit www.sprint.com/4GLTE.

Viggle for Android out of Beta, earns you rewards for being a couch potato

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:59 AM PDT

Viggle is an app that lets you check in from your couch to what TV show you're watching. It's been a great success on iOS, and is now out of beta for Android and ready to reward your TV watching.

The app works by listening to your TV audio on command, detecting what show you're watching by comparing the audio to a database, and then rewarding the user for watching said show. Some promoted shows will get you even more points. The points are then redeemed for things like Starbucks cards, HULU Plus subscriptions, movie tickets, and more.

To make things even better, Viggle is celebrating its launch by giving away a million points... enough for 133 Starbucks cards, 46 movie tickets, or over 300 RedBox rentals. You'll have to be quick, however, because that contest ends today.

Be sure to check Viggle out in the Play Store here.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean SDK now available for download

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:38 AM PDT

Now that Google I/O is in full swing and Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) has been announced, the next step is to see some development. In keeping with this, Google has released the SDK to developers worldwide. The official release won't come until July, but you can hit up the SDK right now. You'll see changes such as:

  • Faster, Smoother, More Responsive - Android 4.1 is optimized to deliver Android's best performance and lowest touch latency, in an effortless, intuitive UI.
  • Enhanced Accessibility - New APIs for accessibility services let you handle gestures and manage accessibility focus as the user moves through the on-screen elements and navigation buttons using accessibility gestures, accessories, and other input. The Talkback system and explore-by-touch are redesigned to use accessibility focus for easier use and offer a complete set of APIs for developers.
  • Support For International Users - Android 4.1 helps you to reach more users through support for bi-directional text in TextView and EditText elements. Apps can display text or handle text editing in left-to-right or right-to-left scripts. Apps can make use of new Arabic and Hebrew locales and associated fonts.
  • Expandable Notifications - Android 4.1 brings a major update to the Android notifications framework. Apps can now display larger, richer notifications to users that can be expanded and collapsed with a pinch. Notifications support new types of content, including photos, have configurable priority, and can even include multiple actions.
  • Resizable app widgets - Android 4.1 introduces improved App Widgets that can automatically resize, based on where the user drops them on the home screen, the size to which the user expands them, and the amount of room available on the home screen. New App Widget APIs let you take advantage of this to optimize your app widget content as the size of widgets changes.

Google IO 2012 keynote impressions

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 03:13 PM PDT

Well, the worst kept secret in Android has come to pass - the Nexus 7 is a real tablet, and its available for $199.  The first day of keynote is in the books, the nerds are lining up for their freebies and the Android universe has a new OS to look forward to getting.

As you've probably already heard, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was announced today and is coming preloaded on the Nexus 7 tablet.  Expected to hit other devices such as the Galaxy Nexus and Xoom in mid-July, 4.1 is not just minor tweaks on top of Ice Cream Sandwich.  Features include enhanced notifications and options, offline capabilities for voice to text, resize and adapt for widgets, and Google Now.

The feeling I gathered from the developers sitting nearby was that these were all welcome additions, even though some are coming later than they should have.  When demonstrated on the handset, it was pretty neat, however, when demo'd on the 7-inch tablet, it was more immersive and engaging.  The biggest props came for offline voice to text and the cards that come with Google Now and search results, although there were oohs and ahhs when we saw how notifications work for 4.1. It was also nice to see Google putting more attention to little details like bouncy animations and buttery smooth transitions.

It's pretty obvious that Google is really pushing the tablet agenda here, even more so than in 2011's Google I/O.  Content is the key and Google has become a proprietor of everything - movies, games, books, magazines, and apps.  When you have a device that is priced to compete with the Kindle Fire then you will need to be able to support it with content. The moves on Google Play signal that Google is ready to deliver on this front and that there's a compelling reason to buy an "Android" tablet.  Speaking of the tablet, the Asus device is much more bang for your buck than a Kindle Fire.  For your money you get a higher resolution screen, a front-facing camera, NFC, Bluetooth, and stock Android apps and experience.  It will take some marketing and ad spending but Google has the potential to sway people from going with Amazon for their next (or first) tablet.

Although I am anxious to get my hands on the tablet, I am really more curious about the Nexus Q.  Being able to share my music or movies from the cloud is interesting and Google's approach is very obvious - Come to us for everything and we'll let you watch it everywhere.  As much as I like the novelty of letting everyone add music to the party playlist, it feels like this would make for a fun way to broadcast movies and YouTube.  I still haven't uploaded my entire library of music to Google Play so perhaps this is the way to get me to move my music to the cloud.

The Google+ tablet experience looks very sharp however I am still a little bummed that there's not an easy way to handle pages. Many of you might know that we have a Google+ page but it's not something we give a great deal of attention to, on a regular basis.  We've struggled with handling this as we are forced to deal with the browser so let's hope there's help on the Pages front soon.  In the meanwhile, we are able to use third party apps and services to keep you plugged in and engaged with our Facebook and Twitter accounts.  That said, I will likely get more active with Google+ now that it's optimized for tablets.  Even if it's on a personal front, it's more immersive and inviting than ever before.

Along those lines, Google + Events is one of those ideas that makes so much sense once you see how it's designed.  Tied into your Google calendar and with your circles, it's silly to imagine any other way of coordinating an event.  And, because of the way it handles your event from before it starts to after it finishes, it's something that will bring people coming back for more.  What I like most about this Google+ feature is that it does not require you to sign up, nor does it beat you over the head with trying to convince you to get started.  If you wanna stand on the sidelines, so be it.  But, for those who really want to stay engaged and have fun, Google + Events is a huge leap in that direction.  With 250 million users (150 million 30-day active), we could be on the verge of a major growth explosion.

There's nothing quite like a live Hangout with Google Glass that includes skydiving, biking, building scaling, and a surprise visit from the CEO. To say there was a buzz in the air is an understatement. I've always looked at Glass as somewhat of a novelty idea for the time being and figured the long term stuff would be great. Knowing that it could be years before final realization, it's something I'd watch from the side. After seeing it in real world applications, I am very optimistic in that it could change how people share and what it is they capture. Holding a baby in your hands and it smiling at your eyes instead of being put off by a camera? Come on! Biking and running with real world help and location-based assistance? I get it now.

There's still another keynote ahead for tomorrow and plenty of time to spend with developers and other Googlers. Looking ahead to Chrome and whatever else it is that Google has, I am stoked. It could be the fanboy and rose-tinted glasses talking, but I see as much promise today as I did when Android was announced. Sure, the developers are eating this stuff up, but when it's all said and done, consumers are going to love the end results.
