Liveness Check added to Jelly Bean Face Unlock security feature

We all remember how cool the new Face Unlock feature was for Android 4.o Ice Cream Sandwich when it was announced a while back. Today it’s still a nifty trick to show off to your iPhone buddies or at parties, but we all know that it’s far from foolproof. The fact that one could just simply use a still photo of the phone owner to access all their content was a little disappointing and relegated this security feature to basic social entertainment.

Well Google listened to the constructive criticism and updated Face Unlock with their new ‘Liveness Check‘ function for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean devices. Liveness Check will wait for the phone owner to blink before proceeding to unlock the phone.

Now I know some of you are going to go out on the highest tree limb and say that someone could just present a video of the phone owner to access the forbidden. Sure, I guess that’s true but how many of you actually have videos of people that are simply looking directly into the camera. If you have that intimate of a video, it’s probably safe to assume that you are close enough to the person that the Face Unlock is not intended for you in the first place.

So all in all, I think Liveness Check is a great additional security measure taken by Google to further protect Android user content.

HTC hints at DROID Incredible 4G LTE launch next week

Any of you who are following HTC USA on Twitter may have noticed a tweet yesterday stating “Next week, we’ve got some special fun headed your way. We hear it’s going to be INCREDIBLE.”

So I’m going to go out on a limb and say that HTC just confirmed the long awaited DROID Inc 4G LTE release. With all the buzz surrounding the Galaxy S III and the newly announced Nexus 7 tablet, it’s almost easy to forget that this phone was on its way. Who is still excited and waiting for this HTC One S in black in red?

Zombie thriller, Dead Trigger blasts its way onto Android July 2

Zombie-mania has hit many a geek lately, myself included, and Android zombie lovers will get what looks to be a great first person shooter title as soon as Monday, July 2. Dead Trigger appears to be a cross between Resident Evil and AMC’s The Walking Dead, and it looks awesome! You will fight off hordes of undead with many different weapons in your arsenal.

The game is only $.99 and promises to deliver updates with new missions,  weapons, characters and more. Hit the break for the official presser and check out the video below for yourself and see why I will be buying this game on release.

Dead Trigger finally on Google Play

Brno, Czech Republic – June 29, 2012 – Madfinger Games today announced that Dead Trigger, an
eagerly anticipated first-person zombie shooter game, will available on Google Play for Android
device from Monday, July 2nd 2012. With outstanding next-generation graphics and user-friendly
gameplay on mobile devices, Madfinger Games has again created an amazing handheld experience.

Madfinger Games has already established a reputation as a game developer capable of delivering
visuals that push the limits of mobile technology with titles like Shadowgun. Developed using the
Unity game engine, Dead Trigger is raising the bar for mobile game graphics even higher.

Madfinger Games worked hard on making their game different from the abundance of other zombie-
themed video games out there. “Dead Trigger stands out visually because of the game making process
itself,” said Benysek, lead programmer at Madfinger Games, who added that the game employs a
number of tools and effects you'd find in big budget console games like advanced shaders, detailed
character and enemy models, and even motion capture for “both living and undead animations.”

The team pointed out that they put a lot of time and energy into crafting the game's enemy AI,
too. Unlike some undead-themed games, zombies in Dead Trigger aren't simply braindead drones
shambling about, hoping to take a bite out of players, but they actually react adaptively to the player's
movements, and will do things like climb over obstacles to get to them.

Dead Trigger takes place in an alternate reality version of 2012 where modern civilization is on the
brink of collapse and hordes of undead flesh-eaters now roam the Earth. Even though Dead Trigger's
storyline is purely fantasy, the team said that its fiction draws some inspiration from real-life…albeit in
a highly-exaggerated “worst-case-scenario” way.

Madfinger Games said that they aren't simple going to release the game and move onto the next
project. “We will ceaselessly be working on it post-release to enhance it as much as possible,”
promised Michal Babjár, Vice President of MADFINGER Games. He explained that like a number
of console games, post-release support for Dead Trigger will include both technical improvements
and brand-new gameplay content. “We hope to continue to surprise players with the new updates we
have planned. Even after Dead Trigger is out, players can look forward to new missions, weapons,
characters and much more.”

Dead Trigger will be available for $0.99, €0.79 or £0.69.

A Quick Look at the Hidden Easter Egg Found in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean [Video]

We all like hidden treats provided by Google, don’t we? Well here’s a quick peek at the new Jelly Bean Easter egg and it’s just as fun as the last. To activate the Easter egg, simply go to Settings > About Phone/Tablet, and tap the Android version number 4-times fast (4 will get you to the very beginning, more will pass the start image) and your good to go. Once you see the picture of the cute jelly bean, just longpress on the screen to get to the endless game of flickin’ beans. Fun fun! Jump past the break to see a video of it in action.

DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX ICS update goes live

Motorola Android fans can rejoice as ICS has just gone live for the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. Judging from earlier leaks, this ICS/Motoblur fusion looks to be pretty darn cool. Anyone who wants this puppy right now can head to System Updates in Settings and enjoy some ICS goodness.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Overview On The Nexus 7 [Video]

The Nexus 7 tablet was not the only star at Google I/O this year. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shared the spotlight and is just as impressive, if not more so. In this video, we walk through some of the standout features of Google’s latest mobile OS, including recommendation widgets, flick to delete, icon and widget interactions, Google Now, and more.

Even though Jelly Bean only moves Android up to 4.1, there are enough new features to consider this much more than a minor release.

Apple Wins Injunction Against Samsung, May Block Sales of Galaxy Nexus

Apple today won an injunction against Samsung that may see a ban on sales of the popular Galaxy Nexus phones.

The complaint is very similar to the one Apple lodged against HTC and subsequently won. This one is particularly painful for Android users however as the Nexus represents Google’s premier development device, and the only one (officially) running  Jelly Bean.

Samsung is ready to appeal so this isn’t over quite yet, but it doesn’t look good for Samsung at the moment.

Fix for Jelly Bean ROM wifi issues on Verizon Galaxy Nexus found

Many users enjoy staying on the cutting edge by flashing a new ROM onto their devices. Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners who tried to flash a recently released Jelly Bean ROM onto their device discovered a problem with wifi connectivity issues. Connection strength could not be maintained.

Fortunately, XDA forum member mwalt2 took some time to dig into the reason and discovered a single file that differed between the Jelly Bean ROM and what Verizon provides. Restoring the Verizon version appears to fix the problem. Follow the source link below for the file and instructions on the fix.
