Google has updated their Google Play support page for questions about Nexus 7 order and delivery, and have given some solid shipping dates. All orders placed before July 13 will be processed and shipped "soon". Here's the breakdown for orders from the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia:
Remember, this only applies to orders placed on or before July 13 If this applies to you, and you don't get your Nexus 7 according to this timeline, you're directed to call Google support at 1-855-83-NEXUS (63987). | Skype: 'Skype version 2.8 for Android not affected' by messaging bug Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:48 PM PDT
While there was never any mention of the recently-reported (and rare) Skype messaging bug actually affecting Android, anyone who had any slight concerns can rest easy. While a fix is being rolled out, Skype has officially stated that Android users on Skype version 2.8 are OK. In an official statement on their blog, alongside announcing a fix for all affected versions, they had the following to say specifically mentioning Android, and iOS versions of the app --
So, while all is OK, if for some reason you've avoided updating to version 2.8, it's probably worth doing so to ensure you remain bug-free. Source: Skype

| Early CyanogenMod 10 preview build brings Jelly Bean to Galaxy S III Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:30 PM PDT
If you like to live dangerously, and can't wait any longer to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on your Galaxy S III, you'll be pleased to hear that a (very) early preview build of CyanogenMod 10 is now available for Samsung's 2012 flagship. The build isn't yet feature complete, but it seems to be about as functional as the current batch of CM9 nightlies of the S III. That is to say the current build includes a couple of known stability issues with the camera and Wifi tethering -- the kind of thing you'd expect from a nightly-level build. Also, this build is only for the international Galaxy S III -- that's the one with 'GT-i9300' listed under Settings > About device > Model number. Preview builds are also available for some of the North American (Snapdragon S4-based) Galaxy S III's, albeit with far more stuff broken. Find 'em here and here. So it's not complete just yet, but it's an early taste of Jelly Bean on the Galaxy S III, and early reports suggest it's very quick and surprisingly stable. | Google Wallet arrives on the Nexus 7 via software update Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:04 PM PDT
Google has just announced that a software update will be pushed to the Nexus 7, which will bring the Google Wallet app to the device. This looks to be the same 4.1.1 OTA update that the Google I/O tablets received, which is great news because it means both are now running the exact same OS version (let's hope it stays that way!). The post says that the update 'is being pushed', so look for it to hit soon! It has been hit or miss as to which devices can officially carry Google Wallet, so you should feel good Nexus 7 owners. | Re-live the old, old days, as StyleTap brings Palm OS to Android, for a price Posted: 17 Jul 2012 02:39 PM PDT
Do you pine for the old, glory days of Palm OS? Still hanging onto that old Treo for dear life? Well, hang no longer. The guys over at StyleTap have brought their faithful Palm OS emulator to Android. If you want it though, be prepared, you're going to have to pay handsomely for it. $49.95 to be precise. There is a free 14-day trial, so at least you get to play with it before committing. It's compatible with Android devices running Eclair upwards, so pretty much everyone should be able to lay their hands on it. So, it's not going to be picked up by the casual user. Things have pretty much come full circle though now, with many current Android users starting out on Palm OS. StyleTap has done a pretty good job of keeping the platform alive over the years, bringing their emulator to Windows Mobile, Symbian, iOS and now Android. It isn't some half-baked attempt either, for all intents and purposes, this is Palm OS running on an Android device. | 8GB Google Nexus 7 now listed as 'in stock' on Google Play Posted: 17 Jul 2012 02:21 PM PDT
We've seen the availability of the Nexus 7 go from 'coming soon', to 2-3 weeks, then 3-5 weeks, but now a quick look at the ordering page for the 8GB Nexus 7 shows you it's sitting in stock, and will be delivered in 3-5 business days. Android fans in the US have been a bit rabid about not getting their tablets when they expected to get them, but demand has seemingly outweighed availability and many, like Phil, are waiting and waiting for a delivery date. Hopefully, this is a sign that the 8GB version will soon be in the hands of all who ordered. Now we need to see the same for the 16GB version. In a week or two, when all the smoke has cleared, all us "early adopters" will be using and enjoying our Nexus 7s. I've been lucky enough to have mine for a while, and it's quickly become my go-to device for most things. For gaming, web surfing, or reading, the Nexus 7 fits my lifestyle perfectly. I can't wait to see other folks telling me how their Nexus 7 does the same for them. Thanks for the tip, Jasmin!

| Barnes & Noble launches Nook for Web, gives you 6 free books to try it out with Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:50 PM PDT
Although somewhat late to the party, Barnes and Noble has today joined the ranks of online e-reading solutions, by launching Nook for Web. No sign-in, software download or Nook account is required to start reading. Books in the Nook store can be instantly sampled online, right within the web browser by clicking the "read instantly" button. Nook for Web is compatible with both PC and Mac, and with all the main internet browsers. We're promised support tablets and smartphones this Fall, but a quick trial using Chrome on a Galaxy Nexus, saw Nook for Web working just fine. It's not what you'd call user friendly though on a screen that size, but then it is designed for desktop browsers. As you would expect, it syncs your position in your books with your other Nook reading applications, but now finally Nook users can read at their desktop. Amazon and Kobo in particular have had desktop solutions for a while now. Late or not, Barnes and Noble is welcome to the party. Evernote 4.1 has been released with a bunch of great updates for Android tablets. A revamped UI takes advantage of all that screen real-estate with a left-hand pane for navigation and content pages on the right that are easy to swipe through. There's a new list view to make it easy to see notes by location, date, title, or tags. A solid addition for both Android phone and tablet users are sublists, which allow users to bump bulleted lists inwards additional levels. Evernote is a top-notch cloud note-taking app that has recently been dabbling in a few other dedicated apps, like Skitch for project management, Hello for contact management, and Food for culinary bookkeeping. I've always been a fan of the app, even if it only gets used occasionally, and a lot of people swear by it. There are competitors like Springpad out there, but so far few have come close to what Evernote has to offer. The only real clincher is that if you're particularly busy, you'll probably need to sign up for a premium account. Get downloading below! Any big Evernote fans in the house? Google has gone and pushed out a pretty nice looking, 'interactive weather visualization' for weather searches on tablets. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to the new Google Now service introduced with Jelly Bean, searching for weather in a particular location in Google on your tablet, now brings up what we see here. It was rolled out to smartphone searches a few weeks ago, so it seems only right that tablets aren't left out. You'll get to see a pretty detailed snapshot of current, and upcoming weather information for your area. There's an hourly forecast to scroll through, equally there's also a ten-day forecast too. And, it looks pretty darn good. After all, who ever said that looking at the weather forecast had to be dull? It works -- as you would expect -- on Chrome, but we've also verified that it works too on the stock Android browser. Go ahead, give it a try in your browser of choice. And, for a little pro tip, why not add a weather search for your home, work, whichever chosen location, to your bookmarks in the stock browser on your device. Add that bookmark to your homescreen, and you've got yourselves a pretty powerful local weather forecast, right at your fingertips. via +Google

Canadians looking for an affordable LTE-capable device and lots of data to chew on will be interested to hear that Rogers has started a 6 GB promotional plan and now has the Sony Xperia Ion for sale for $49.99 on a three-year contract. The $60 plan includes unlimited calling to 10 Canadian numbers, unlimited texting, unlimited evenings and weekends, and 200 weekday minutes on top of the data. Rogers is even willing to toss in data sharing to multiple devices at $10 off every month for the next 10 months to help you burn through those 6 GB, though the promo is only running until August 8. While I'm still not sure I'd pick the 6 GB plan over Mobilicity or WIND's current promotions (especially with that three-year commitment Rogers includes), it's hard to argue with Rogers coverage, and ever-expanding LTE is always sweet. Motorola has announced that the Defy Pro would be landing in Canada by way of Rogers this summer. Much liike the original Motorola Defy, this handset is built for punishment with dust, splash, and scratch resistance, except this time there's a keyboard. Here are the specs.
Awhile back I was really interested in the Motorola Admiral, but since it never made it to the GSM side of things, there was never really an option for us Canadians. As a guy with a history with BlackBerry, I can definitely appreciate the physical keyboard - hopefully it won't be dampened by the ho-hum specifications. I could live without ICS, but a bigger battery and some impact protection would be nice. Any Canadians interested in picking this one up? | German judges say Motorola Xoom doesn't infringe iPad design Posted: 17 Jul 2012 11:30 AM PDT
Apple is locked in legal combat with many Android manufacturers, with a range of tactics being used to try to keep iPad and iPhone competitors off store shelves. In Germany, Apple's had some success using tablet design patents against the likes of Samsung, and it's also attempted to use the same tactics against Motorola's 10.-1inch Xoom. However, today a court in Dusseldorf, Germany ruled that Moto's tablet does not infringe upon the iPad's design patents. Specifically, NASDAQ reports that the judges decided that the shape of the Xoom's corners and back were enough for it to be distinguishable from Apple's tablet. It wasn't a complete win for Moto, however, as the court also dismissed a counterclaim from Motorola that Apple's design patents were invalid. Moto was ordered to pay one third of costs, with Apple being told to pay two thirds. Source: NASDAQ

Tweet Lanes for Android fits in very nicely with ICS design, but is that enough?Tweet Lanes launched on Android earlier this month and somehow managed to muscle its way into a plenty-crowded category of Twitter clients. There are a few things that Tweet Lanes does differently that immediately sets it apart from the norm. The main thing is that all outgoing tweets are pumped through the same context-sensitive text box. no matter if you're starting a new tweet from scratch, replying, or retweeting. This is done by selecting which tweet (or tweets) you want want to interact with, and the top bar changes and bottom tweet box adjust accordingly. Secondly, Tweet Lanes can use a device's volume up and volume down keys to navigate through feeds.

| HTC says Desire HD still getting ICS, refutes reports of update cancellation Posted: 17 Jul 2012 10:45 AM PDT
Last week some troubling news seemed to be emerging from Canadian carrier TELUS, which put out an update schedule suggesting that the Android 4.0 upgrade for the Desire HD had been canceled. The schedule indicated that the ICS update had been canned due to "poor device performance in testing," which didn't make a whole lot of sense given that we've seen ICS running on even less powerful phones like the Desire C in recent months. As such, we reached out to HTC for comment, and an the manufacturer has informed us that ICS updates for the Desire HD, and the similarly-spec'd Desire S, are still on. An HTC spokesperson told Android Central --
So there you go. The Desire HD may be approaching its second birthday, but at least it should see one more OS update before it's put out to pasture.

The Xperia Go is a little sleeker than last year's ruggedized Xperia, and it should be plenty fast too, with a 1Ghz dual-core ST Ericsson CPU inside. Unfortunately, though, it's yet another Sony phone launching on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and as we look for updates from ICS to Jelly Bean from other manufacturers, that's a big disappointment. Nevertheless, if you're not a power user, and you're after something a decent little water-resistant smartphone, it's worth a look. An update to the Sonos Controller app is available that expands its list of supported tablets and also adds support for landscape. Late last year, Sonos made the app available for tablets, but the selection was limited. It is now available on all 7-inch and 10-inch devices, which of course includes the recently released Nexus 7 (see our review). In addition, Sonos has added landscape mode which was one of the most requested features, and also has added larger album artwork for your visual pleasure. Here's a quick heads up that the Kyocera Hydro, the 3.5-inch, submersible (as in dunk it in water) Android phone that we first showed you back in May will be available on Boost Mobile starting Aug. 3. The phone runs $129 and can be kept below the surface for 30 minutes, which is a good bit longer than you'll last, we imagine. It's more of a protection thing than a usability thing -- you won't be making calls under the sea or anything. On the other hand, it's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, which is more than we can say for a good number of landlubbers out there. We've got the full release after the break.
