What have we here? A device going by the name of the Motorola XT926 just made its way past the FCC today, boasting Verizon compatible radios with 4G LTE, and global roaming capabilities. Also known as the much leaked Motorola DROID RAZR HD, not much else was revealed in the filing (there never is) but rumors currently point towards a 720p HD display, 13MP shooter, 1GB of RAM, 3,300mAh battery (I really hope Moto delivers on that spec) and all the other specs typical of high-end devices these days. We’re getting closer, folks!

Lenovo’s Transformer-Like IdeaTab S2110 Now Available For $343 (This Ones A Looker)

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 06:22 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

With so many Android devices coming out what feels like almost every single day, sometimes a few can slip through the cracks. That was almost the case with the Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 which silently went on sale today. The device was originally shown off at CES earlier this year, going by the name the IdeaTab S2 and now it looks like it’s finally time for the Lenovo’s tab to shine.

As you can plainly see, the S2110′s claim-to-fame is that it features a Transformer-like optional keyboard dock that gives a boost in both battery life and ports by way of 2 full-sized USB ports and full sized SD card slot. When it comes to processing power, this guy is packing a Qualcomm dual-core S4 which should handle all the CPU intensive tasks you can throw at it (gaming, could be a different story). Here’s a quick look at the rest of the specs:

  • Sleek and curved tablet with textured back for comfortable web surfing and reading
  • Bright 10.1″ IPS display with 178° wide viewing angle so you can share your experience with friends
  • Up to 10 hours battery life with 30 days standby time
  • Optional keyboard docking station with dual USB ports and 3-in-1 SD card reader extends another 10 hours of battery life and gives PC functionality with tablet convenience
  • Rich HD video with 720p playback
  • 5.0MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 1.3MP front webcam for crystal-clear video chatting
  • Dual speakers and SRS® TruMedia audio enhancement
  • 3G* and WiFi connectivity
  • Access to thousands of apps via the Google Play Store and the Lenovo App Shop, which includes apps optimized specifically for Lenovo tablets.
  • Built-in AGPS finds your location in as little as 10 seconds (3G model only)
  • Built-in FM radio you can use offline

You can find the Lenovo IdeaTab 2100 right now on Lenovo’s official site in a variety of storage options where the 16GB and 32GB versions have been discounted to $343 and $375. Just add $56 if you want to nab the optional keyboard dock (wowzers).

Over The Air Update (IMM76Q) for Verizon Galaxy Nexus Incoming

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 05:23 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Looks like Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners could have an update coming soon, going by the build number IMM76Q. Shown off in the above screenshot, the update wont take devices up to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (I know, bummer), but should patch some bugs as well as address signal issues plaguing handsets by introducing a new baseband. Everything else is pure speculation and exactly when Verizon owners can expect their devices to receive Jelly Bean is anyone’s guess.

Galaxy Note 10.1 unboxed, features 2GB of RAM and Quad-Core Exynos

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 04:01 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has finally gotten into the hands of a willing leak and they wasted no time in unboxing the thing.

The device itself is not the least bit new to us, but there were a few things we still had questions about. The device does, in fact, house 2GB of RAM like many of its Samsung Galaxy S3 cousins.

It also sports a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor, a 7,000 mAh battery, a 5 megapixel camera with 1080p recording, and it will be shipping with Android 4.0.4.

We prefer Jelly Bean, of course, but we’re certain it wasn’t ready in time. Remember that a rumor pegs August 15th as the launch date. We’ll see if that holds up in due time. [BravePost via Kuccblog]

LG Spectrum 2 for Verizon leaks

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 02:47 PM PDT

It seems Verizon can’t quite catch a break when it comes to leaks (did I just do something there?) Another phone of theirs has come out from the shadows.

It’s the LG Spectrum 2 and its renders were leaked by TechnoBuffalo. The original device was launched in the latter parts of 2011, and this does seem to be a substantial upgrade.

The specs we know of so far include a 4.7 inch HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core S4 processor by Qualcomm, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8 megapixel camera, NFC, 4G LTE, android 4.0, and more.

The design leaves a lot to be desired but we haven’t come to expect anything different from LG as of late. I mean, there’s only one way to make a rectangular phone… right, Apple?

Sprint sending Samsung Epic 4G Touch over to Boost Mobile

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 02:09 PM PDT

Sprint has been known to give some of its hand-me downs to their PAYG carriers after they’ve properly replaced them. It seems that the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, their one and only Galaxy S2 variant, is no exception. A user agent profile has surfaced over at Sprint’s servers showing a device called the SPH-D710BST.

The D710 was the Epic 4G Touch’s original model number, and the BST on the end undoubtedly stands for “Boost,” the name of one of Sprint’s pre-paid carriers. Aside from that fact it doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about the device: it’ll be the same exact thing. [Sprint (open in Internet Explorer)Thanks Andy!]

Samsung Galaxy Stellar shows up in Verizon documents – what is it?

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT

A new Galaxy phone seems to be headed for Verizon. Droid-Life has leaked a support document revealing the “ Samsung Galaxy Stellar. ” With no prior rumors tied to this name outside of it being trademarked earlier this year it’s hard to determine what, exactly, it is.

Verizon has at least two Android phones from Samsung to be released in the coming months. One is believed to be a follow-up to the Samsung Stratosphere, and the other is the Samsung Jasper. The former would probably retain the Stratosphere name in some way, shape, and form, and it’s likely it won’t don the Galaxy moniker.

On the other hand, the Samsung Jasper sounds like a codename and it could very well be the codename for the Stellar. The Jasper isn’t a Galaxy S/S3 device so it would definitely fit. Whatever the case is, Verizon’s got yet another option on the horizon and we couldn’t be more happy for more options.

Huawei Fusion 2 heads to the FCC

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 01:48 PM PDT

Huawei’s latest budget phone, the Huawei Fusion 2, was seen being serenaded by engineers over at the offices of the FCC. The smallish device is no doubt headed for AT&T. Earlier leaks of the device suggested this, but the FCC’s confirmation of AT&T’s GSM radios gives us another piece of evidence to cling on to.

The device won’t be a looker for those who want a powerful device but it’s going to be aimed at AT&T’s PAYG customers. The off-contract price could be less than $200, but that’s not something we can be confident in until we get more evidence or hear it from AT&T themselves. Head to the FCC to see for yourself. Dead Trigger was made free due to rampant piracy

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 01:08 PM PDT

We were all shocked when Dead Trigger’s big update last Friday also brought a price drop. The zombie game was made available for free. Those who didn’t want to spend money on it were happy, and those who’d paid for it just recently were rightfully angry. But there’s a third group that isn’t accounted for: the pirates.

We never usually think of them: piracy happens, and it’s a tough thing to stop. Even Apple’s closed guardian is prone to this sort of thing. Unfortunately it’s what drove Madfinger to consider this business model. They’ve confirmed that the game was made free because they were unhappy with the amount of people pirating it.

We’re not sure where they got their stats from, but for them to publicly come out with that suggestion, an action that not many companies care to take, it must be significant. The game introduced in-app purchases to continue monetization.

Many people moaned and groaned at this approach after having experienced the shady business of “freemium” games in the past. I can only think back to my experience with the latest Oregon Trail game. I wasn’t even an hour into the game before I was cut off from doing anything.

Sure, I could load the game up and move my character around, collect virtual coins, etc, but without spending any money there was no way to move forward in a meaningful way. Madfinger wants to reiterate that they are no doing that at all. Whether you’re paying $0.00 or $9.99, you’ll be able to finish the game just as well as anyone else.

Those who pay get the perks, of course, but at least you’re not being forced to pay to continue. It’s an interesting move by the developer. They’d sold at least 100,000 downloads in the Google Play Store at $.99 despite the piracy. Since Google doesn’t report exact values it could have been closer to the 500,000 end of the threshold for all we know.

But this model allows them to attract more downloads, and they’ll possibly attract more dollar signs than they would have otherwise.

They have to support their studio and if this is the only route to go then they’re doing it the best way one can ask short of putting obtrusive ads all over the place. In any case, Dead Trigger is free, and if you don’t want to spend any money you don’t have to. Enjoy it in the Google Play Store. [Facebook]

Toshiba Regza T-02D is an insane camera-heavy smartphone for Japan

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 11:59 AM PDT

Toshiba is continuing its smartphone line with the addition of a new Regza phone. It’s the Toshiba Regza T-02D and it comes with an insanely, ridiculously high resolution camera for smartphone standards.

It’s a 13.1 megapixel and it uses Sony’s Exmor R backlit sensor. The camera can achieve ISO levels of up to 25,600, something that a lot of DSLRs can’t even achieve (though who would really want that much image grain to make up for a lack of light?)

It also has a 4.3 inch “new AMOLED Plus” qHD display, and will house a dual-core processor (make and model unknown) clocked at 1.5GHz. Android 4.0, LTE, and more round out the specs for this thing.

It sounds like it might actually be a very decent smartphone, but don’t expect much of the world to get a chance to own it. This one’s headed to Japan first and we wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t venture much further outside of Asia. Read on for full press details.

Tokyo, July 23, 2012 – Fujitsu today announced that its new docomo NEXT series REGZA Phone T-02D smartphone will be available in Japan from NTT DOCOMO, Inc., beginning July 26, 2012.

“On” when held
Based on the smartphone’s orientation and motion, the handset automatically determines whether or not it is being held in the user’s hand. As long as it is being held, the screen will be kept lit.
Intellicolor
The phone detects the kind of lighting in use at the user’s location-such as fluorescent, incandescent, and natural lighting-and automatically adjusts the screen’s color balance to the optimal setting.
Shake-activated screen recovery
Even if the user unintentionally tilts the phone, the screen orientation can be returned to its original state by simply shaking the handset two or more times. This is useful for quickly returning the screen orientation to the desired state when the user is lying down.
Sleep log(11)
With its built-in accelerometer and microphone, the smartphone can detect the state of the user’s sleep and provide detailed information about the user’s sleeping habits, including the duration of sleep, the number of times the user rolls over during the night, and snoring-related information. The handset will also offer advice to users about how to improve their sleeping habits.

6. High-resolution 13.1-megapixel camera among the top of its class of smartphones

T-02D’s camera is equipped with an “Exmor R for mobile” back-illuminated CMOS sensor, along with the “Milbeaut Mobile” image processing engine that incorporates a wide range of photography capabilities, including high-sensitivity capturing and noise reduction. The combination of these features allows for stunning high-resolution photographs and videos.

Highly responsive
The camera has a launch time and shot-to-shot wait time of about 0.5 seconds(12). As a result, users never miss out on the perfect moment, and can capture it with a great looking picture.
Super nighttime mode
In addition to T-02D’s ISO 25600-equivalent high sensitivity, the phone also comes equipped with a nighttime mode that allows users to take beautiful photos at night while minimizing camera shake and noise, two problems commonly encountered with previous low-light photography technology.

7. Smart fingerprint sensor with on-off switch

Rather than using a passcode or swipe pattern to unlock the phone’s screen, the new handset’s fingerprint sensor allows users to simply press and slide a finger across a switch to quickly unlock it. The screen can also be turned on and off using the switch, enabling one-touch operations.

ZTE N880E will relaunch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 11:31 AM PDT

ZTE has announced a relaunch of an old device of theirs. It’s the ZTE N880E, and aside from any Nexus devices they’re boasting it as the first phone to come shipped with Android 4.1 out of the box. If you don’t remember this forgettable phone originally came out in May 2012 with Gingerbread.

Unfortunately the phone isn’t all that impressive. It almost seems as if ZTE just wanted to get something out there so they could have a nice marketing tagline to use. Its specs include 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 4 inch WVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 4GB of internal storage, and a 1,650mAh battery.

Yep, nothing special at all. But hey, it runs Jelly Bean now. See if you can’t get your hands on it over in the company’s home turf of China. [via ZTE]

Jelly Bean: is it really as smooth as butter? [Poll]

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:55 AM PDT

When Google announced Android 4.1 they introduced a very intriguing feature. That feature would be called Project Butter and it would attempt to bring the smoothest experience we’ve had for Android yet. Using hardware acceleration, increased frame rates, and several more optimization measures Google promised an experience that was as smooth as butter — you can see how its name came about.

But is it really butter? Does this update really bring a substantial change in the feel of the operating system? I, for one, didn’t have such a smooth experience with my first use of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Things seemed smooth at first but eventually got bogged down. I immediately thought of the gentlemen in those ads citing that one famous line: “I can’t believe it’s not butter!”

But I refused to believe this was what to expect with so many other people raving about it. I must admit that I was on an early stock ROM built from source when I first tried it, and things likely weren’t perfect. Fast forward to some point last week and I decided to flash an updated version.

My stance has changed and I’ve taken a complete 180 degree turn: yes, this is butter. Butter personified. It’s still not quite as smooth as Windows Phone and iOS, but for Android and its unfortunate limitations due to being run inside virtual machines this definitely impresses. I must ask, though: do any of you feel the same?

Is Project Butter everything you’d hoped and expected it to be or does your device not seem to benefit from it for whatever reason? Do you think this is a permanent solution to fix the smoothness and fluidity of Android or will Google need to do more than work around current limitations of the Dalvik virtual machine? Let’s hear your thoughts in the poll below.

Samsung SPH-L300 pictured again — headed to Sprint as Samsung Gogh?

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 08:57 AM PDT

Several new images of the Samsung SPH-L300 have hit the internet courtesy of BriefMobile. The phone, which we first saw pictured back in May, was recently spotted at the FCC sporting Sprint-compatible radios, and the carrier destination is confirmed with this latest leak. The handset, also going under the name Samsung Gogh, features LTE support, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with WVGA resolution. The Gogh also gets 1GB RAM, a 5MP camera, and currently runs Ice Cream Sandwich.

The design of the device is quite different than other phones coming from Samsung’s camp in recent months with a two-toned brushed metal look. The source of the photos appropriately posed the SPH-L300 next to an HTC One X, both to show off its size but also calling forth similarities between the two handsets. A row of three hardware navigation buttons insures we won’t see Android 4.0+’s software navigation keys.

Interestingly, the phone’s specs put the Gogh in a similar class as another rumored Sprint device from Samsung, the Galaxy Reverb. There is nothing to indicate the two phones are indeed the same device, but it seems odd that Sprint would have two mid-range phones from Samsung in the pipeline. We’ll have to wait for pricing and release details to see how Sprint and Samsung’s plans pan out, but unfortunately that information is not known at this time.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 commercial hits the web

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 07:47 AM PDT

Ladies and gentlemen, get those styli ready. Here comes the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. While the company hasn’t officially named a release date for the device, an online pre-order has been followed up with the appearance of the tablet’s first commercial. The ad shows off the Note 10.1′s stylus input and features such as shape match, positioning the slate as the perfect tool for business types looking to make a good impression. The spot surfaced on the YouTube channel of the company responsible for filling in the commercial’s cast, so Samsung might not be quite ready to go all-in on advertising for the Note 10.1 just yet. But the time is coming, so don’t be surprised to see the new tablet on shelves very soon.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus now $99 at Verizon

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 07:34 AM PDT

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus with LTE is beginning to show its retail age, dropping to its lowest price yet as of today. The phone that once retailed for $299 on a two-year contract can now be had for an easy $99, which by my calculations still makes it a major steal, even in light of newer devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3. Some might speculate that the Galaxy Nexus is on the way out at Verizon, and that very well may be true, but there’s still time to pick up the stock Android device for a great price.
