HDC Galaxy S3 is KIRF-Tastic

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:16 PM PDT

Every popular phone these days eventually sees a Chinese-made knock-off arrive sooner or later, and the Samsung Galaxy S III is no exception.

Presenting the HDC Galaxy S3, which on the outside doesn’t really even look that bad.  It is thicker than the real deal, but the screen is about the same size and looks to even be running a skinned version of Android that mimics Samsung’s own Touchwiz.

More details and video after the break.

The phone sports a meager 1ghz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera. Sure the specs are bad compared to a genuine Galaxy S III, but to be honest they’re more than usable and represent last years mid-range android devices.

You won’t be seeing this on the shelves stateside however, as the “Samsung” logo on the back surely won’t fly over here.

T-Mobile Launches its Yearly Back-to-School Promotions

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:15 PM PDT

While we’re still in the midst of our summer, T-Mobile is prepping up its yearly back-to-school promotions. Starting July 11 (tomorrow), T-Mobile will offer a variety of options for new and existing customers to give them cheap and viable options for 4G smart phones. They are offering a Buy One Get One (BOGO) Free on any Samsung Galaxy 4G smartphone. This one works a little different as you don’t necessarily get the same device for free. For starters you can grab either the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S Blaze 4G, or the Galaxy Tab 10.1. With the BOGO deal, customers will receive a Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Blaze 4G, or a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G for free. It should also be noted that it will be free after rebate.

Also T-Mobile is offering customers $25 in Live Nation Concert Cash to anyone who purchases any Samsung 4G smartphone and activates a no annual contract of $50 or greater. The $25 can be applied towards a live concert of their choice.

According to Andrew Sherrard, the senior VP of T-Mobile USA marketing, “As we approach this busy season for families, we know it’s important for them to easily and affordably stay connected, which is why we’re making it simple to step up to 4G on our most popular Samsung Galaxy devices. Whether mom is looking for a family plan to help keep track of everyone, or a new high school graduate wants the latest smartphone but under a responsible budget, we’re offering our customers a wide range of affordable options as well as some nice perks with these new promotions”

I personally love T-Mobile’s constant BOGO (buy one get one) promotional offers throughout the year. It offers such a great value and enables families to get cheap and affordable smart phones. The deal will last from July 11th till September 4th, so you will have an ample amount of time to take advantage of it.

Keeping Families in Touch for Less

Samsung Galaxy S II Receives Jelly Bean SDK Port

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:52 PM PDT

Thanks to LastStandingDroid over at the XDA forums, the Samsung Galaxy S II (I9100) has received an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean SDK port. With any SDK port, the build is fairly rough and one should expect many things to either not work, or not work correctly. Although there is a short list of things that do work:

  • Device boot
  • LED-flash
  • SD card (internal-only)
  • MTP (can't copy files)
  • ADB
  • Vibration
  • SuperUser
  • SM
  • Network Data
  • Logcat
While it’s great that certain aspects of it do work, there is quite a laundry list of things that don’t work such as audio (can’t use it as a phone), WiFi, Bluetooth, camera, GPS, etc. An SDK ported ROM is never meant to be used as a daily driver, it serves more or less as a way for a user to preview the new firmware. Of course, your phone needs to be rooted and have a custom recovery installed in order to flash this. Head over to the source link for more information.

Leaked Document Highlights Sprint’s Epic 4G Touch Smartphone Due To Get ICS Starting This Week

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:20 PM PDT

As we’ve seen Samsung smartphones like the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II Skyrocket get those Touchwiz-flavored ICS updates, it was only a matter of time before we saw additional devices which would be next in line for the coveted update. Such is the case for the Sprint variant of the Galaxy S II— you know: the Epic 4G Touch. Thanks to our amigos at Android Central, the leaked document you see above shows that we now have an idea of when the official Android 4.0 rollout is arriving as it’s expected to hit Epic 4G Touch devices starting this Thursday, July 12th through next Friday, July 20th.

Naturally while this leaked document is a solid indicator of good things to come soon, we have to keep in mind we haven’t heard anything from Sprint and/or Sammy directly regarding the official rollout of the update. So if you’re an Epic 4G Touch owner, keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best starting this Thursday.

OUYA hits Kickstarter, A new Android-based open source gaming console

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:15 AM PDT

In the next year, I’m expecting to see more and more Android-related media devices and set-top boxes such as the Nexus Q. Last week we told you about a new Android-based gaming console called OUYA, but we really didn’t know much about it. Well it just became a Kickstarter project so we have more details.

The concept and idea behind the project is to make it easier for developers to bring a console game to market. Every OUYA console is a developer kit and there won’t be a need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. So basically no licensing fees, retail fees, or publishing fees so anyone can create the next big title. All games will have the freemium model so everyone will at least be able to try any of the ones they’re interested in.

The unit itself was created by Yves Behar, and his firm fuseproject, which created the Jambox. The controller is designed to be a “love letter to console gaming.” It will have fast buttons, triggers, laser-precise analog sticks, a D-pad, and a touchpad for games that were originally designed for mobile.

The full specs aren’t too shabby and include:

  •  NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal flash storage
  • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth LE 4.0
  • USB 2.0 (one)
  • Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
  • Android 4.0

Now I mentioned that every device is a development kit so it’s no surprise that it will be easy to root and it won’t void your warranty. In fact, they will even sell you one already rooted if you choose. OUYA is made for hackers and the hardware is designed to encourage it as it opens easily with standard screws.

Right now there is 29 days left to go and they are looking for $950,000. They are already up to $293,296 at the time of this post so things are looking really good.  You can pledge as little as $10, which will reserve your username. The unit itself and controller was $95, but that’s already sold out, but for $4 more you can guarantee a unit before it hits stores. For $699 you can get a first run unit already rooted.

For more information and/or to pledge, hit the source link below.

It means that the Nexus Q is meant to be tinkered with and improved upon silly. After seeing the Q get unlocked and rooted for all kinds of tomfoolery, it was time to see what else could be done with the device. Well thanks to XDA Forum member fredc888, we are now one step closer to being able to see the full potential and take full advantage of the Q’s ability to run apps and games. fredc888 was able to successfully connect a Bluetooth-compliant HID mouse to the device. Yes friends a Bluetooth mouse. That is definitely big time.

While this is an exciting achievement, it is one that should be taken with extreme caution. As you might expect, the Q doesn’t have a traditional Bluetooth menu to allow it to connect to other devices outside of Android phones and tablets, so the Bluetooth stack configuration file must be directly edited to allow input devices and connect to them automatically and naturally— this step requires unlocking the bootloader, which effectively wipes the device's data partition. Should you make an oopsies, unbricking options for the Nexus Q are limited and that means users should take extraordinary precaution when writing to the device.

Despite the significant risk to the Nexus Q– you can’t help but be excited at the idea of connecting additional gadgets to the device. So if you’re feeling a little lucky, brave or just plain curious, be sure to check out the complete thread— which you can find at the source link below.
