Clock Widget from Atrix HD Now Available via APK File, Looks Awfully Similar to Rings Digital Weather Clock

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:56 PM PDT

The “3-ring style” clock widget from the Atrix HD has been pulled and made available for your device via the .apk file. The clock is broken up into 3 different parts and are all interactive, showing you time, weather in multiple cities, your battery and data plan percentages. Sadly, this widget is proprietary to the home launcher which means you have to install the Atrix HD’s home launcher in order for this widget to function. Instructions and a download link will be available after the break:

Instructions:

  1. Download and unzip the .apk files from the .zip.
  2. Use any File Explorer app to install ALL 3 .apk files.
  3. Launch the Atrix HD launcher and install the widget.

Download Link: Atrix HD Widgets

Does this widget look familiar to you? That’s because an eerily similar set has been available on the Google Play store for quite some time now called “Rings Digital Weather Clock.”

This app is free on the market and unlike the Atrix’s HD widget, you can use this widget on any home launcher. Head over to the Play Store via the QR code or download link!

Could Best Buy start selling an unlocked GSM Samsung Galaxy S III in the near future?

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:42 PM PDT

A “supposed” snapshot photo of a Best Buy computer screen has implied that the retailer could start selling the unlocked GSM Samsung Galaxy S III in stores. In the photo, the “model” is clearly shown as the I9300, which of course is the unlocked variant of the Galaxy S III. While I think it would be great if this were true, there’s several aspects of the photo that says otherwise. The “begin” date for the sale shows May 25th of this year, which of course has already passed. Also, in the “inventory” section everything is shown as “0″, even the “on order” is shown as 0, thus assuming that they’re not expecting any device units to be shipped to them.

Last but not least, the hefty price tag of $799.99 before taxes is far too steep when it’s cheaper on other online retailers. What do you guys think about this? Does this look valid or is it just “much ado about nothing?”

Google’s “My Tracks” gets first update in a year, now revamped with Holo UI

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Remember Google’s open sourced app called “My Tracks?” If you do not, we don’t blame you as the app hasn’t received an update in over a year! For those who are unfamiliar with the app, My Tracks is an application for your Android powered phone where you can record GPS tracks and visualize your hiking, running, biking or any other activity while watching live performance statistics. The app makes it easy to archive and save your training history with Google Docs and Google Maps, as well as share your activities with anyone you’d like anywhere in the world.

My Tracks is ideal for fitness junkies, or even for a casual walk around a city. After one long year, it has finally been updated with some really cool features including the ability to play back your tour directly on Google Earth. Other new features include:

  • Major UI update (Holo UI)
  • Simpler, faster user interface
  • Improved flow for sharing a track
  • Improved flow for inserting markers
  • Option to use track location as the default track name
  • Aggregation of statistics over time to show trends in your performance
  • Improved charts and stats tables that are easier to read
  • Bluetooth and ANT+ sensor bug fixes

For my outdoor fitness apps, I have always used Endomondo Pro. Although with these new enhancements, especially in the UI department, I’d definitely give My Tracks a shot! What’s your guys’ experience with this app? Hit up the dowbload link or QR code after the break for a free download in the Play Store!

Samsung to Announce More Colors For Galaxy S III in Due Time

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 02:18 PM PDT

Yesterday we reported that customers will be able to pre-order the Garnet Red Samsung Galaxy S III via AT&T starting July 15th and will be in stores by July 29th. The Garnet Red Galaxy S III will be an exclusive color for AT&T and there have been no reports whether the color will make its way to other carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. While the Galaxy S III comes in two great colors (Marble White and Pebble Blue), I had hoped that Samsung would pump out more colors such as this as time went by. Surprisingly, a Samsung UK spokesperson has released a statement regarding other colors for their Galaxy S III. According to the Samsung rep’s statement obtained by Pocket-Lint, “We will be announcing potential colour variants in due course.”

Sadly there’s no timetable on when this will happen, nor what colors Samsung is planning on releasing. I for one would love to see a black or gunmetal color, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. What color would you guys love to see on the Galaxy S III?

If you pre-ordered your Nexus 7 from Gamestop, good news, it’s now in stock

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 10:52 AM PDT

Those of you that decided to order your Nexus 7 through Gamestop are the lucky ones because you will be able to play with your new Nexus 7 before those that ordered it through Google Play. Gamestop is sending out texts and emails letting those who pre-ordered know that it’s in stock and ready for pick up.

Now if you didn’t pre-order, don’t plan on stopping by to snag one because they only received enough stock to cover pre-orders. The regular supply won’t hit stores until August 7.

Verizon announces new GameTanium subscription service for games

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 10:51 AM PDT

Exent's GameTanium, a mobile game subscription service, announced a new spin on their app for Android smartphones and tablets. According to the press release, the new service is available exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers. Subscribers will get unlimited access to over 100 Android smartphone games and over 50 tablet games, including titles like Doodle God, Fruit Ninja and World of Goo. The cost is a monthly fee of $5.99 per device.

Two differences appear to set this apart from the GameTanium app available on the company’s web site. First is the addition of tablet games. The second is the ability to avoid the hassle of installing a non-market app. The partnership with Verizon Wireless appears to be a step on their path to partnering with carriers that we previously covered.

In addition to making the games available, the service will offer parental ratings, game imagery, and reviews to go with the lack of advertisements. The GameTanium apps are available for download through Verizon Apps to eligible devices. Verizon encourages users to try the service free for a three day trial period. Just note, usage may count towards a customer's data allowance.

Full press release after the break.

Featured Play Store Newbie: Bomb The Zombies [Game-Casual]

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 10:18 AM PDT

Right off the bat, let me tell you that this game is a lot like Angry Birds, but there are some differences that make it very fun to play, not to mention it has a 4.5 rating in the Google Play Store. In this game each level consists of a structure with a few Zombies. Your goal is to toss bombs on to the structure in the hopes of knocking it down and thereby killing the zombies, much like Angry Birds. The big difference is the tossing. In Angry Birds you toss the birds in a horizontal fashion by aiming high or low. In Bomb the Zombies the bombs are placed in front of the structure so you can aim high or low, but you also need to aim to the right or left. This is all done with a swipe of your finger.

As you progress, there are other elements that make it very interesting. For example, you are sometimes given a box of dynamite (much like Angry Birds), but it’s up to you to place it where you think it’s best. Another interesting element is that there can also be another character that you cannot kill. For example, a structure might include six zombies and one girl. Your goal is to kill all the zombies and destroy as much of the structure as you can without harming the girl.

You can move on to the next level by simply completing it, but in order to feel like you really mastered it, you need a perfect rating (as opposed to 3 stars with other games like Angry Birds and Cut The Rope).

There are 90 levels in 6 stages and the developer, net mobile AG, promises that more are on the way. There’s even a global scoring system so you can see how you rank with everyone else in the world. It’s completely free so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try. Just hit one of the download links below to get started.

A few lucky souls in the UK receive their Nexus 7 today from Ebuyer

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 08:34 AM PDT

Yesterday we reported how things are looking for U.S. shipments of the Nexus 7, which show customers with early pre-orders receiving them either today or early next week. There are already reports of some lucky people in the UK receiving their coveted Nexus 7 today,  at least the ones who ordered through Ebuyer. It also looks like these shipments might be in error as the site shows that they aren’t expecting to start shipping until July 19th.

Upgrade to Xperia S, Sony Xperia SL shows up in pink and blue

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 07:13 AM PDT

As we reported earlier, an upgraded version of the Sony Xperia S appears to be on the way. Sources indicate the device, an LT26ii listed as a Sony Xperia SL, will run on an overclocked 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 chip. The image that has surfaced shows the device in pink and in blue/violet. This is the second pink Xperia that has been spotted this week. It is not clear whether other colors will be available and still no word on availability of the device.
