Nexus 7 sold out at GameStop, Staples and Sam’s Club on first day

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 03:21 AM PDT

Announced in late June at Google I/O 2012, and available for pre-order ever since in select countries – both from Google and other third-party retailers – the Nexus 7 finally started shipping yesterday. At the same time, Google authorized its retail partners to start selling the tablet in their stores, with companies like GameStop, Staples, Sam's Club or Office Depot having already received Nexus 7 stock.

Reuters reported on Friday afternoon that the Google tablet sold out with various U.S. retailers including GameStop, Staples, Sam's Club, while Office Depot "continued to offer the device for sale as of the afternoon."

GameStop went on record to say that it has already sold out its initial allotments and that it will receive more Nexus 7 units only next month:

“We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson said.

A third allotment of preorders will be available in August. The game retailer declined to share exact number of preorders.

Google did not mention how many tablets it sold since it started taking pre-orders, but Hugo Barra did say at Google I/O that the first day pre-order number was "big," while Eric Schmidt on Thursday revealed to reporters that "there was 'immense demand' for the Nexus 7 in the first week after it was introduced."

The Search giant isn't saying that its tablet has sold out already, but shipping time on Google Play is at 1-2 weeks for the 8GB version and 2-3 weeks for the 16GB version.

Have you purchased your Google Nexus 7 tablet yet?

Ninja Camp: Addictive shuriken-throwing game for Android

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Ninjas or shinobis are people who have mastered the art of stealth. They have been hired as mercenaries and spies in Feudal Japan. They wore black ninja suits to hide themselves during the night. To protect themselves, they mastered how to use the sword and throw shurikens at their enemies. If you want to become a virtual ninja, you can hone your shuriken throwing skills with the Ninja Camp game app.

The main goal of this game is to throw shurikens at objects flying around you. Make sure not to let them hit the ground or you will lose one life. You will also need to avoid hitting bombs.

The game can be played by simply tapping on the screen and directing where you want to throw your shurikens. The game sounds easy but actually requires more than just throwing shurikens. You will need to have good eyesight, perfect timing, and quick reflexes to hit your targets and avoid the bombs.

The Ninja Camp app can be played in two different modes: The Camp and Single Round. The Camp mode lets you play the game in different rounds. The game’s difficulty will also increase as the game progresses. You can also do missions while in this mode. Achieving missions will let you gain extra credit points as well as gain levels.

The Single Round mode lets you play the game in one single round. You can keep playing the game as long as you have enough lives and sufficient amount of shurikens to throw. Once all your lives and shurikens are used, then it’s game over. Missions are not available in this mode.

You can also pick up power-ups within the game. The Life Bonus grants you one life and makes you last longer during the game. The Weapon Bonus increases the number of shurikens thrown. This is helpful in hitting multiple targets, but in return, has a higher chance of hitting bombs. The Speed Bonus makes your shurikens faster. The Points Bar bonus fills the point bar and multiplies your score with every object that you hit.

The points you have accumulated can be used to buy upgrades from the shop. You can buy power-ups or extra lives to survive even longer in the game. You can also buy additional points within the game for a price.

This app is fun and challenging to play but with its limited number of choices and features, the game tends to lose some of its excitement and charm in the long run. Such limitation is actually an opportunity for the developers to look into.

One area where the game app can become more enticing to game players is the addition of more power-ups and switching the game’s backdrop after every few rounds. Allowing the player to customize the game such as changing the ninja’s outfit or adding cool effects on the shurikens could also be a plus point — at least for me it is.

Another thing that can easily annoy anyone is the popping ads that appear after every round. Sometimes, the ads appears immediately when the game starts. The shuriken throwing experience will surely improve without ads getting in the way of the shurikens.

I also noticed that sometimes the app doesn’t respond when I tap the screen. Disconnecting my phone’s Wi-Fi seems to have solved the problem. Not sure, though, whether that issue is an isolated case, unique only to my phone.

But, certainly, the developers of Ninja Camp are eager to make the game better for its players, so we can be sure that upcoming updates will only bring glad tidings to the game app’s current fans.

Enroll yourself in Ninja Camp and enhance your shuriken throwing skills.

Cloudpipes for Dropbox: Scheduling filtered file and folder syncs to or from Dropbox

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Armed with a powerful Dropbox browser, Cloudpipes for Dropbox (beta) is capable of downloading or uploading whole folders at once. You can create pipes that would automatically link a remote Dropbox folder to a folder on your device so that you can choose which Dropbox files or folder go where on your phone storage. More than that, you can schedule the app to automatically upload, download, and transfer certain files whenever you like.

The app runs independently of the official Dropbox app for Android, so all you need to do in order to access your Dropbox content is to allow the app to access your cloud data. By doing so, you can play around the automation and the scheduling aspect of Cloudpipes.

The moment you log in, three tabs will be displayed on your screen: Pipes, Dropbox, and Transfers. Pipes displays all scheduled tasks made via Cloudpipes. It will also display the specific upload or download task that you scheduled at a certain time. You can choose the source and destination of a file and even choose the mode of operation. In other words, you’re given the chance to choose whether or not you’d like to copy a file to a certain location, or move it to the location altogether.

A good thing about the app is it allows you to take control of your schedule by letting you alter your own created pipe. For instance, if you have scheduled a transfer of your files from your Dropbox to your Android device every 5:00 A.M., you can always change the schedule of the activity any time you like. You may even execute all tasks at once by simply clicking on the Menu button, and selecting Execute All.

Cloudpipes also has its file filter feature which allows you to easily categorize files according to extension and/or size. Meaning, you can easily transfer all ZIP files to another location.

The app provides several options. You may set Cloudpipes to transfer data over Wi-Fi or while you’re charging your device. Moreover, it also provides status bar notifications for Cloudpipes activities.

Whether you’re a person who needs to schedule your daily activities or someone who simply wants a hassle-free day, Cloudpipes will be a great help for you.

It is important to note that the app is still in its beta version and it can only add up to 4 pipes in any instance. Nevertheless, it has been tested by developers and is proven to work.

Cloudpipes for Dropbox offers you greater convenience in your Dropbox experience.  Check it out from the Google Play Store.

Samsung brings an extra 5GB of cloud storage to the Galaxy S3 from SugarSync

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 12:35 PM PDT

It seems Samsung is a lot more focused on services and software with its latest devices. The company gave some of its Galaxy S3 customers 50GB of Dropbox storage, with access for 2 years – presumably you’ll have to buy another Galaxy device to continue using 50GB or more after the 2-year period expires, depending on the promotion for that future Galaxy S device.

Now, Samsung decided that 50GB of free storage from Dropbox was not enough, and it has partnered with Dropbox’s competitor SugarSync to bring an extra 5GB of cloud-based storage to its Galaxy S3 customers. At first glance, that doesn’t seem to make any sense. Why would Samsung offer just 5GB more from another competitor? But the SugarSync storage bonus is meant to be more than just raw online storage, and it’s supposed to be integrated into Galaxy S3′s AllShare Play feature that allows users to sync their media files between their Smart TV, desktop, smartphone and tablet.

Another difference between the Dropbox storage and SugarSync’s offer is that Samsung made a deal with the latter to have its cloud storage solution work on a lot more devices than just the Galaxy S3. The 5GB of free SugarSync storage will come to all Samsung devices that have the AllShare Play/DLNA feature.

Samsung has been pushing DLNA and AllShare Play for quite a while, ever since the original Galaxy S actually. So if you want to be future-proofed and to take advantage of Samsung’s unique features, you’ll need to make sure you’re buying a device that has a DLNA connection.

Nexus 7 Google Play pre-orders shipping now, Google confirms

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 12:07 PM PDT

It's been a rough day today for anxious Nexus 7 buyers that have been counting the days and hours until their precious Jelly Bean tablet reached their doors.

In early morning we picked up a rumor that Google may be shipping the Nexus 7 tablet today, at least according to one reddit user that received shipment confirmation via email – we even checked that tracking number ourselves, although until writing these lines, his package had not been delivered.

We then found out that not only is Ebuyer shipping (free of charge) Google Nexus 7 pre-orders in the UK today, but that GameStop has been cleared by Google to start selling the tablet in its stores. This was certainly an alarming report for everyone that decided to buy the tablet straight from Google Play, even more so for those buyers that acquired the device right after its Google I/O announcement.

But now, we can put your mind (partly) at ease, as Google has finally announced that it started Nexus 7 pre-orders today. What better way to do it than post it on the official Nexus Google+ page? As you can see in the image above posted at 2:15 PM EST – which is when that reddit email said shipping would start – Google is "locked and loaded, ready to play: we've started shipping +Nexus 7 pre-orders today!" The same message has been posted on the company’s Twitter accounts.

Of course, that's not the only confirmation you're going to get. In fact, you probably have an automated response sent to your email address confirming everything. And here's Google's official statement on the Nexus 7 delivery, that's currently playing on the company's help line:

“We’re now shipping Nexus 7 pre-orders. The first wave of orders are going out today and all pre-orders are scheduled to ship within the next 3 business days. Once your order has shipped you will receive a confirmation email and tracking number. Though our agents are unable to provide a specific delivery date for individual pre-orders, please rest assured that our shipping team is working to fulfill all orders as quickly as possible.”

Yes, there's a chance you won't get your device today – we did say “(partly) at ease” just before – but at least you know what's going on. So, are you one of the lucky ones, or will your Nexus 7 tablet arrive in the next three business days?

Nexus 7 update: GameStop launch in effect, Ebuyer starts shipping

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 09:31 AM PDT

A few hours ago we told you that the Google Nexus 7 tablet may be due today. We have even showed you proof that some pre-orders are supposed to be delivered today, at least according to emails received by at least one Nexus 7 buyer and now we have further updates for you.

Our readers have jumped in to tell us that Ebuyer is already shipping the tablet in the UK, even though we previously heard the Nexus 7 was supposed to be launched only next week. Moreover, other readers said that GameStop has received Nexus 7 stock and that it's now allowed to sell it.

We have been able to confirm both reports, so the good news, for some of you, is that you'll be getting your Nexus 7 tablet at some point today. The bad news is that you'll be getting it tomorrow or in the following days. What seems to be sort of a major problem so far is Google's inability to better control the launch – granted though, it's the delivery companies that are actually handling the shipping.

A lucky UK Nexus 7 buyer posted on reddit an image of his or her new tablet – see picture above. And just as expected, the device was purchased on Ebuyer.

Moreover, Tech Hog managed to score some screenshots (above and below) that prove the fact Google has given GameStop the go ahead to sell the Nexus 7. The screenshots are also revealing instructions from corporate offices – among those you can clearly see the odd requirement of changing the price from $99,999 to the correct $249 for the 16GB Nexus 7 version.

According to the same screenshots, GameStop will be receiving by July 13 (today) enough Nexus 7 stock to cover for all pre-orders taken on or before July 11. Orders posted on July 12 will apparently be fulfilled in the following days as GameStop stores are going to receive "an allocation of Google Nexus 7 tablets by Tuesday 7/17" to cover for those.

We'll be back with more details once we have them, meanwhile keep us posted on your Nexus 7 delivery. Is it there yet?

Best general reference apps for Android

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Our Android devices can be used in a lot of different ways. Aside from receiving calls and sending out SMS messages, our Android device can work just like a mini computer. You can check your mail, browse the Internet, play HD games, and as general reference. With the hundreds of thousands of apps on the Google Play Store, you can easily transform your device into a handy and pocket-sized dictionary, thesaurus, how-to manual, book of facts, and much more. Check out our app list of some of the best general reference apps for your Android device.

WolframAlpha

Do you need help with your mathematical equations? Want to search for the meaning of a word and look for its antonyms, synonyms, and rhyming words? Do you need help answering the questions bothering your mind? Ask the WolframAlpha app and get answers instantly right on your Android device. This app helps you learn and discover new things about what you are looking for. You can find a lot of useful information through the app — from the biggest celestial bodies to the tiniest cells that ever existed. You can also use this app to automatically solve mathematical problems.

The app features two input keys on its interface: a basic QWERTY keyboard below, and a number keypad on top. Type in your search terms or mathematical equations on the search bar. Ask the app’s intelligent mind and you can search for the constellations, the world map, Android smartphone, and anything you want to look for. I was also amazed at how this app transformed my Android device into a virtual dictionary and thesaurus. Search for a word and you will get its meaning, rhyming words, synonym, antonyms, common keywords, and a lot more. The app even tells you the scrabble score for that word. What’s more, the app can also be your virtual calculator and mathematical equations solver.

Make your Android smartphones even smarter with the WolframAlpha app.

Wikipedia

One of the advantages of the Internet is that you can search for almost everything on the Web–fast and easy. Although books and hard copy sources are still the best sources of information, using virtual sources can be used to back up, update, or enhance the information we get from hard copy materials. If you want to have a virtual and portable encyclopedia, download and install the Wikipedia app on your Android device.

This app lets you search tons of Internet articles from the web right on your Android device. You can search about 20 million articles in 280 different languages. I have been using Wikipedia together with my printed material and sources to finish my reports and do my assignments. With this app, you can fit a set of encyclopedia right on your Android device.

The app also allows you to save articles and read them later offline. This feature is really useful when you are out to work or doing a report in class. The Wikipedia app also features a Nearby option to let you search for articles related to your current location. This can be useful when you are touring a place and you want to equip yourself with useful information about that place.

Transform your Android device into a virtual encyclopedia with the Wikipedia app.

Dictionary – Merriam-Webster

Being a writer is hard work. A writer is not someone who carelessly combines words and produces mediocre work. A writer is someone who has skills and effectively expresses herself or himself through writing. To become a good writer, one must be able to read well. And, in order to read well, one must also be able to understand words by knowing their meanings. For amateur writers, you can improve your vocabulary by knowing the meaning of a word by using a dictionary. If you don’t want to carry a big and heavy dictionary, try making your Android device a virtual dictionary with the Dictionary – Merriam-Webster app.

This app lets you use a virtual dictionary right on your Android device. If you are reading and come across an unfamiliar word, just open the app and search for the meaning of the word. You can also use voice search for finding new words hands-free. To expand your knowledge about a word, the app also includes its synonyms, antonyms, origins, and sample sentences. You can also enable the Word of the Day option and learn one new word everyday.

Dictionary.com

Another dictionary app for your Android device is Dictionary.com. If you are fan of Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com on your computer, you will enjoy using this app right on your Android device. You can use this app to access the word database from these sites while on-the-go and check the meaning of a word.

You can browse up to 2 million definitions, synonyms, and antonyms. You can also get to know more about a certain word through its history and origin. For proper pronunciation, the app also includes an audio sample that will help you learn how to properly pronounce a word. The app can also introduce you to a new word with its Word of the Day feature.

Other features include voice search, sample sentences for each word, support for landscape orientation, compatibility with Android tablets, a widget for your home screen, and many more. The app, with ads, can be download free from the Google Play Store. You can also download the premium version to remove those pesky ads.

Learn new words and practice proper pronunciation with the Dictionary.com app for your Android device.

Advanced English & Thesaurus

If you are an expert in the English language and want to learn how words are linked together, rather than their meanings alone, you can use the Advanced English & Thesaurus app on your Android device.

Aside from giving the meaning of each word, this app shows you how each word is linked to other words in terms of synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, hypernyms, and similar words. This manner of organizing the words will help you know the meaning of a word, how it is linked to another word, and facilitate memorization of a certain word. This app is perfect for those who want to learn the relations and uses of a word rather than its meaning alone.

You can also use this app while you are offline. You will need first to download the app’s word database and you can use this app while on-the-go. The app also features various filter options to help you search for words easily. Use the Fuzzy filter option to search for a word when you are not sure of its spelling. The Keyword filter option lets you search words by using keywords within other compound words. Replace a letter or a group of letters with “?” or “*” with the Wild Card filter option.

Other features include word transcriptions, browsing your last 50 searched words, smooth article scrolling, adding a word of the day as widget on your homescreen, and many more.

Thesaurus

In contrast with the dictionary, a thesaurus is a reference book that groups words that have the same meaning (synonyms). It also includes words that have the opposite meaning of a certain word (antonyms). The largest thesaurus in the world, which contains 920,000 entries, is the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary. You can now also a fit a thesaurus right on your Android device with the Thesaurus app.

The app features a simple user interface. Opening the app will bring you to its main menu where you can find a search box on top. Searching for a word will then bring you to the word’s page with its respective synonyms and sometimes its antonyms. The app also supports a variety of languages such as English, Italian, Russian, Romanian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, and German.

Picture of new Motorola XT907 for Verizon uncovered, might be RAZR on a budget

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 07:35 AM PDT

TechCocktail/Flickr

Now that the Motorola Atrix HD has been unveiled, we're rather short on talking points about Motorola.

Luckily, the dry spell is over, as a new Moto phone — with model number XT907 — has been spotted at Chinese e-commerce site Alibaba. Details are rather scarce, since the leaked picture of the phone only shows its sexy back part, but we'll try our best to dissect it.

The Verizon logo plastered on the back is a dead giveaway that the Motorola XT907 will be yet another Droid RAZR phone designated for Big Red. It's adorned by the same Kevlar back cover, and it apparently has an HD rear camera. It wouldn't be a 2012 Verizon phone if it doesn't have that 4G LTE marking as well.

A quick check done by Droid Life of the XT907 on Motorola's website reveals a phone with similar model number that sports a 540 x 888 resolution, which isn't exactly the norm. We'll probably see the device donning on-screen navigation buttons. Now here's where pure speculation takes over, as the phone is said to be powered by the speedy and efficient Snapdragon S4 processor.

The faster processor, however, doesn't quite match the numbering of the XT907. Seeing that the Droid Razr is an XT912 phone, there's a possibility that the lowered number XT907 is a more affordable model of the RAZR, much like the RAZR V.

And this is the end of the rumor mill for the mysterious Motorola XT907 – for now! What do you think? Could this be a cheaper RAZR model prepared by Motorola for the upcoming new school year?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 rumor roundup: everything we know

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 07:28 AM PDT

samsung Galaxy-Note-2-mock-up

Given that the Samsung Galaxy Note was one of the biggest bestsellers for the South Korean electronics giant, the recent flood of rumors regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 doesn’t seem unfounded at all. But to be frank, the only bit of reliable info is the 30% official confirmation from Samsung Arabia back in mid-July. Everything else is based on rumors, logic, and industry knowledge.

We know it might be hard to keep up with all these rumors, so we’ve compiled all the information we have covered about the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in just one article, divided by spec rumors and release date rumors. Hope you’ll find it useful to have everything in one place, without having to go into too much detail!

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 release date

Before we dive in all the Note 2 release date rumors, it should be mentioned that Samsung tends to stick to a certain yearly schedule. Samsung has announced the original Galaxy Note at IFA 2011, before actually releasing the device in October. The Galaxy Note 2 might follow the same pattern, albeit some changes could occur given the dynamic nature of the market. Also, we can expect the Galaxy Note 2 to be priced similarly with other high-end devices from Sammy, so a $600 off-contract price is very probable.

One of the most recent rumors was ignited by a DDaily post that claimed Samsung will host another Samsung Unpacked event to reveal the Galaxy Note on August 30, a day before the start of the IFA trade show in Germany. No word on a possible release date was mentioned by the Asian publication. This followed a report from Korean news agency MK who has originally claimed claimed that Samsung will officially unveil the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at IFA 2012, on August 31.

As far as actual release date rumors go, GSM Arena claims that an industry insider has confirmed the Galaxy Note 2 for September, while other sources claim that the Galaxy Note 2 will arrive in October (thus competing directly with the next iPhone)

Display & Design

Multiple sources confirm the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will feature a 5.5-inch SAMOLED display (most likely PenTile), with most of them mentioning that the size of the device will not be increased by a whole 0.2 inches when compared with the original Note, thanks to a smaller bezel. While they have originally announced that display on the Note 2 will feature an unbreakable plane (UPB) display, the Korean news agency MK has more recently announced that Samsung is expected to roll out the new display tech starting with the next major device after the Note 2.

Processor, GPU and RAM

While all sources point, as expected, to a quad-core Exynos SoC, I personally believe that rumors about the Note 2 featuring an Exynos 5250 SoC seem a little far fetched. It’s far more likely for Samsung to use the same Exynos 4 SoC, as you’ll find inside the international version of the Galaxy S3.

Android version and camera

Logic, as well as most sources, seem to point out that the Galaxy Note 2 will be released with the latest version of Android available, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, although in the past, we’ve seen manufacturers going for “not the freshest” Android version.

As far as camera specs go, words have been flying regarding a 13MP camera, although it has been mentioned that Samsung might keep the resolution consistent with that of the original Note’s camera and improve the image sensor (which is actually a lot more important towards the quality of the photos taken with the camera).

So there you have it folks, all the Samsung Galaxy Note rumors in one place. What do you guys think? Are the rumors painting the image of a phablet you would buy? Let us know in the comment section below!
