Nexus Q Plays Pong [Video]

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Google’s magical mystery sphere, the Nexus Q, can stream Google Music, Movies, TV Shows, and YouTube videos. But developers are already hacking the Q to run apps and even play games… like Pong Brick Defender. Mobile development shop BrickSimple managed to modify a Q to play a Pong-like game using the Q’s rotating top volume control as the paddle controller. Simple, but this is just the tip of the iceberg with what we know the development community can do to this thing.

Check out the video after the break.

AT&T Motorola Atrix HD unboxing and initial hands on review [Video]

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 11:51 AM PDT

Will the third time be the charm for Motorola and AT&T? The first Atrix debuted about 1 1/2 years ago, and it’s hard to believe we’re already on the third installment. The Atrix HD is the first Motorola phone to hit North America with a 720p HD screen. It features ColorBoost technology, which is trademarked by Motorola. What exactly it refers to is unknown, but it just might be another way of saying Super AMOLED. The price of $99 screams mid-level, but this is far from that with some pretty hefty specs.

It features a 4.5-inch HD (1280 x 720) display with ColorBoost technology, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 1GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, 8GB of storage, microSD slot for an additional 32 GB of storage, 1780 mAh non removable battery, HSPA+, LTE, Android 4.0.4, and a hefty dose of Kevlar and nano coating. It comes in at 8.4mm thick which is .5mm thinner than the DROID RAZR MAXX. The reason for that is that it doesn’t have the massive 3300mAh battery that the RAZR MAXX sports. With a price of $99, I guess you can’t complain.

While we have no idea what Motorola is calling their UI these days, it’s by far the closest one to stock as shown by our RAZR MAXX hands on, but the Atrix HD gets a few more goodies. The circular widget is three flippable rings of goodness. It shows you the time, weather (from multiple locations), battery and data usage. They also included live icons that let you swipe up to preview the respective app. For example you can preview your new incoming messages in your email inbox or browser bookmarks without actually opening the apps. These are both shown in the video below.

Now as I mentioned the price is very competitive when you consider the specs, but what makes this even more attractive is that when you purchase the Atrix HD, for a limited time, AT&T will give you a Vehicle Dock for free. If that’s not enough, you have your choice of Titanium or Modern White for colors. Alright enough talking, we need to get going on the full review that our own Roy Alugbue will be doing. Look for that soon, but for now check out our initial hands on impressions.

Apple Issues Warning Letters To Retailers Regarding Samsung Galaxy Nexus And Galaxy Tab 10.1 Sales

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 07:52 AM PDT

There’s yet another development of the epic saga between two of the biggest manufacturing giants in the world. In some newly released documents, FOSS Patents has uncovered what is a mind-boggling move by Apple in order to deter any continued activity from Samsung. As Apple continues to go on the offensive towards the Korean giant, it has also set its targets on retailers. Yes, you read that correctly— Apple is now applying the pressure on retailers regarding the various Samsung “infringements”. Many of you have a perplexed look on your face, so let me explain: as Apple continues to press for court-ordered injunctions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales, Samsung believes Apple is acting in what looks to be an unlawful manner. Samsung notes in a recent filing that Apple was actually sending out letters to third parties— otherwise known as retailers— about the court-ordered injunctions. In short, Apple sent do-not-sell letters to the various carriers and retailers that carry Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1. The same letters sent by Apple include actual copies of the court-ordered injunction and a postscript suggesting that the same retailers or sellers are “acting in concert” with Samsung by selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Nexus and effectively, must obey the court order.

Samsung wants the courts to see there is something significantly wrong with Apple’s latest tactics and goes so far as to call them “menacing”. More importantly– as long as there is no court ordered ban as of yet, Samsung believes the retailers should be able to sell the existing inventory of the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1 without any issue. While the various retailers are seemingly ignoring Apple’s warning, this is still a sad development in this ugly battle. Just when you think it couldn’t possibly get worse for both companies, it actually did.

You can see a sample transcript of Apple’s warning letters at the source links below.

US Retailers Reporting Google Nexus 7 Tablet As Sold Out

Posted: 14 Jul 2012 12:25 AM PDT

Looks like Google may have hit a home run with the $199 Nexus 7 tablet (read our full review here). According to Reuters, retailers across the US are reporting their stock as being sold out. So far, GameStop, Staples, Sam’s Club, Office Depot, and Walmart have all run out of their pre-order allotments before the Nexus 7 even hit store shelves.

We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson stated. Their third allotment won’t arrive until August. GameStop would not say how many units comprise an allotment.

This brings up the question of just how many units have been made for the initial production run. A previous rumor pointed to only 600,000 tablets being made in June, which could account for the quick sell-outs. With the Nexus 7 getting highly-positive reviews praising its high-end specs and low price, 600,000 doesn’t seem like nearly enough.

Of course, prior Nexus devices haven’t been top sellers in the past, so perhaps Google simply underestimated the demand of a low-cost/high-performing tablet. I’d rather believe that over Google purposefully keeping the initial production numbers low to artificially drive up demand. The Nexus 7 is good enough to stand on its own and doesn’t need marketing tricks to make it look popular.

Who’s already ordered theirs, and have you gotten it yet?

Kansas Market Lights Up With Sprint’s 4G LTE Ahead Of Schedule

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 11:35 PM PDT

Looks like Sprint pulled the curtain back a little early in Kansas City and switched on their 4G LTE service several days ahead of the scheduled July 15th rollout. Users are also reporting LTE signals in surrounding areas, including St. Joseph, Missouri and Manhattan, Kansas. The full rollout will also include Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio in the coming weeks.

I’m hoping the San Francisco Bay Area comes soon. My Evo 4G LTE is feeling a little pokey when on 3G.
