Light Flow app updated to 3.0.4, fixes Jelly Bean bug

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 04:26 PM PDT

Once I got my Samsung Galaxy Nexus the first app I installed was Light Flow. If you’re not familiar with the app, it enables you to completely customize your LED notification light from the color all the way to the duration of the pulsation. There are also other notification options such as vibrate and sound customization.

Sadly, once I updated my Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Light Flow just wouldn’t work correctly and the LED light would not turn off even after I cleared the notification, thus I was forced to stop using it. Today I’m happy to announce that Light Flow has been updated to version 3.0.4 and fixes the incompatibility issue it was having with Jelly Bean. I have been using it for a full day with no issues. You can check the download link below for the free and paid version after the break.

Amazon now shipping Sony NSZ-GS7 Google TV device

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:28 PM PDT

Last month we were able to spend some time with a couple Google TV set-top boxes made by Sony.  The devices are the NSZ-GS7 and the NSZ-GP9, which were slated to be priced at $199 and $299 respectively. The price difference is due to the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player in the latter device which is scheduled for release later this year.

Sony had indicated the NSZ-GS7 would be available in July and they have delivered on that promise. If you are ready to invest in one of the units yourself, you can now place your order with Amazon. Just hit the source link to start shopping.

Auralux is now available in the Google Play Store, We go hands on

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 10:19 AM PDT

A cool new game is available for Tegra devices and it’s called Auralux, from Wardrum Studios. Some of you might be familiar with it since it has been available for the PC for a while now. If you aren’t, let me first say that this isn’t going to blow you away with mind blowing graphics, but trust me it will give you hours of fun. It’s a minimalist real-time strategy game in which it’s all about taking over other planets for total domination. Sounds pretty hyper doesn’t it? Actually the game is supposed to be a “relaxing cerebral experience” with soothing music.

How it works is this, you start with one type of unit upon one planet and your goal is to send your units (or particles as I like to call it) to other neighboring planets with the hope of taking them over. There’s competition though as two other units will try to do the same thing. Each opponent is represented by color, and each opponent starts the game with the exact amount of resources so it’s all about your strategy. This is my type of game: uncomplicated with tremendous gameplay.

Auralux is free, but if you want more levels you can purchase them via an in app purchase. You start with 3 levels and there are 4 packs available that consist of 5 levels each. For now it’s only available for Tegra devices, but in a couple of weeks it will eventually be available to all while a few levels will still be Tegra only.

Game features:

  • Includes every feature and more from the renowned PC game.
  • Free to try for as long as you like! Simply purchase additional levels for a very low price if you enjoy the game and want more challenges.
  • Gameplay optimized for touch screen devices.
  • Countless hours of gameplay
  • Two available game modes: Normal and Speed Mode, with a secret mode for hardcore players to unlock!
  • Relaxing, ambient soundtrack brings you into a rhythm and meditative state.

Steve Jobs Won’t Influence The Upcoming Apple/Samsung Trial

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 10:13 AM PDT

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already know that Apple and Samsung, the largest electronics corporations in the world, are waging a legal war in several countries with complaints towards each other for patent violations as they battle for domination in the market for mobile devices.

Before Steve Jobs died last year, he made a few statements to his biographer about Apple’s intellectual property, saying he was willing to go “thermonuclear” to “destroy” Google’s operation system. So far, I think that’s backfired on them.

Seeking to introduce the statement in court, Samsung argued in a filing that the statements by Jobs “speaks to Apple’s bias, improper motives and its lack of belief in its own claims in that they are a means to an end, namely the destruction of Android.” However, Apple argued in a court filing that Jobs’ quotes are an unreasonable distraction, and asked that they be barred from trial.

At a hearing in a San Jose, California federal court that took place on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said Jobs’ statements were irrelevant. “I really don’t think this is a trial about Steve Jobs,” Judge Koh said.

Apple sued Samsung last year, claiming the South Korean company blatantly copies its designs for the iPhone and iPad. Samsung denied the accusations and decided to countersue. The trial of all of this madness is scheduled to begin on July 30. Apple has won the pretrial mandate against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Nexus phone already. Samsung is appealing both mandates

On Wednesday, Judge Koh ruled that the evidence about Apple’s operations in China could be discussed, but would not be looked at as a human rights violation. Evidence of Samsung’s taxes paid in the U.S. could be discussed too, Judge Koh ruled, but Apple would not be able to make any suggestions of tax avoidance from Samsung.

WIND Mobile in Canada has begun selling the device for only $49 on their tab payment plan, otherwise it will cost you $399. WIND is also hosting a contest on Facebook that will give participating entries a chance at winning the phone with free service along with a trip to Hollywood for the premiere showing of The Expendables 2.

The Huawei Asecend P1 also comes with some really nice specs:

  • 4 GB local storage plus microSD slot
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 8 megapixel camera with 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera

ASUS Transformer, Transformer Prime and Motorola Xoom Receive CyanogenMod 10 Preview Builds

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 08:31 AM PDT

The other day we received the CyanogenMod 10 preview builds for both the international and U.S. versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III and now there’s more! The CM 10 preview builds are now available for the ASUS Transformer and Transformer Prime (tf101 and 201) and with Motorola’s Xoom. With all the excitement around Jelly Bean and CyanogenMod 10, a working build for tablets is wonderful news to hear.

These are only preview builds though, so they may not be very stable. Unofficial builds also carry no guarantee on support, assistance or updates.

The Transformer builds are currently functional with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sounds, camera, video acceleration, minor dock functionality and most sensors. The GPS and light sensor functionality isn’t in there just yet, but the device’s core functionality is stable and working.

Here’s a quick video of the Transformer Prime running CM10 on its current build in action:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Xoom builds, on the other hand, are not quite as complete. In a post to Google+, Steve Hawkin notes that “A lot of the features and functions are still very much [a work in progress].” He also says that he has personally been using the builds as a daily driver, so they may just be worth taking a look at.

Huawei Ascend P1 Heading to Vodafone UK in August

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:22 AM PDT

You folks living in the UK should be on the lookout for a new device heading your way, the Huawei Ascend P1. This mega-slim Huawei device has been available in other parts of the globe for a while now but a slightly different version will land on Vodafone and various other UK retailers soon. This new version has a soft touch back plate as opposed to the glossy white version found elsewhere. Measuring in at only 7.69mm thin, the Ascend P1 runs a version of Ice Cream Sandwich that is about as stock as you can get considering manufacturer overlays. The device is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core TI-OMAP processor and sports 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM so it should keep many of you power users satisfied. On the rear of the device you will find an 8MP camera coupled with a 1.3MP shooter up front. DNLA certification means that you will be able to seamlessly share your media to your television without the need for any bothersome wires.

Huawei announced that the Ascend P1 will be heading to Vodafone sometime early August while other retail outlets will be announced at a later date. The phone will be free on Vodafone contracts and you can expect a SIM-free version to be released later. Full press release after the break.

Huawei's stylish and powerful Ascend P1 smartphone coming soon to the UK

Beauty meets brains: Huawei's Ascend P1 smartphone, with Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich', packs a powerhouse engine inside a super-slim and elegant frame.

Basingstoke, July 19, 2012: Huawei, a global telecoms leader in smart technology, is to make its super-slim and powerful Ascend P1 smartphone available in the UK from early August. The Huawei Ascend P1, running the latest Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system, will be available from Vodafone and various independent retailers.

The Ascend P1 is just 7.69mm thick, making it among the slimmest smartphones on the market. It's not just slim, it is also compact – its bright 4.3-inch screen is wrapped in a narrow frame, making it smaller in the hand than other smartphones despite its large display. As well, the Ascend P1 has a remarkable engine – a dual-core processor, a high-quality camera and a long-life battery.

Huawei Device UK and Ireland Executive Vice President Mark Mitchinson said: "The Ascend P1 demonstrates, yet again, that Huawei is dedicated to launching beautifully designed smartphones without compromise. The Ascend P1 stands alongside the most compelling Android devices in the market, affording a genuine and rich mobile experience at every turn. It's offers real differentiation in a market that's crying out for change and increased value. The Ascend P1 puts unmatched smartphone firepower into the hands of the mass market, and demonstrates that world-beating technology does not have to come at a premium."

The Ascend P 1 was built for entertainment, and is perfect for advanced services such as mobile gaming, movies and catch-up TV. Its 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 dual-core processor makes for a highly-responsive engine and its knock-out PowerVR SGX graphics chip gives heightened display and a great gaming experience. Imaging and video are made vivid and crisp with a stunning 4.3-inch Super AMOLED 960 x 540 screen and audio is brought to life with Dolby surround sound.

With the Ascend P1, you also get a compact camera that is hard to beat – 8 megapixels with autofocus, LED flash and full HD video recording, plus a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. The Ascend P1 features the latest BSI module, which allows great pictures even in low light. It also has face recognition to put extra focus on those who matter and panorama function for stunning widescreen shots.

The Ascend P1 is also built to connect, supporting fast HSDPA network and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) connectivity, which makes downloading and sharing rich multimedia content a breeze. It is also DLNA certified, giving you the ability to share your pictures and videos easily with other DLNA-enabled devices.

It is easy to use as well. The latest Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' operating system gives access to over 450,000 apps from the Google Play store, plus a myriad of new features. Huawei's unique HAP 5.1 interface sits over the top, and enables easy one-step access to dedicated applications from the unlock screen, including call-screen, messaging and camera.

And the Ascend P1 is built to last. Not only is it housed in a robust metal frame behind toughened Corning ® Gorilla ® glass, it has a highly durable 1670mAh battery, which is optimised with Huawei's own signal detection technology, making the entertainment experience last longer.

The Ascend P1 will be available in black with a soft-touch matt-finish rear casing. It will be available from various UK retailers from early August, starting with Vodafone, where it will be free on monthly price plans of £26 and above. Specific pricing is set by retailers and will be available in due course.
