Prelim build of CyanogenMod 10 now available for Galaxy Nexus

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 12:47 PM PDT

Late last week, Brint Kriebel, a device maintainer with CyanogenMod, made a preliminary build of CM10 available for Galaxy Nexus phones. Kriebel indicates he has been using the build for a couple weeks now as his daily driver on his Verizon Galaxy Nexus and most hardware functions work properly. It is an AOSP build, so Google apps are not included. Being a preliminary build and not an actual release, bugs are expected and should not be reported. If you are interested in trying out CM10 on your Galaxy Nexus, hit the source link for the file. Just be sure to make your backup before you undertake the install.

In case you missed the opening of pre-orders on July 15th, AT&T now has their Garnet Red Samsung Galaxy S III version available for purchase starting July 29th. The red version joins blue and white versions of the Galaxy S III already available from AT&T. This version sports a red back cover, home button, and bezel with a gunmetal rim running around the edges. Unlike other versions of the phone, the navigation buttons light up in red as opposed to white. This version carries the same $199 price as the other Galaxy S III models. Google Play Store Gets Updated To v3.7.15

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 01:18 AM PDT

A new version of the Google Play Store is rolling out, bringing it to v3.7.15. This version seems to be more of a behind the scenes bug fix update as it seems to have fixed the Sprint 4G download issue, so not quite as exciting as the last Play Store update. Other than that, we’re not seeing anything obvious.

The folks at Android Police have pulled the file for those who don’t want to wait for the official over-the-air push and wish to sideload it manually.

Samsung 350 Pixel Per Inch OLED Display Coming Soon?

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 10:07 PM PDT

Samsung is king of OLED and have gotten much praise over some of their displays, but OLED technology is difficult to make in the higher pixel densities that traditional LCDs can achieve.

But a story coming from Korean site etnews states that Samsung has perfected their techniques to produce OLED screens at up to 350 ppi (compared to the iPhone’s 326 ppi Retina displays). Higher pixel densities mean sharper text and images, which generally translates to better looking device displays.

Hopefully this will mean that Samsung phones will be coming with better screens later this year, and that makes us happy.

2011 Sony Xpera Devices Not Getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 06:31 PM PDT

The UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, John Cooper, has recently been taking questions from their customers on Facebook. This has revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and Xperia Mini Pro will not be receiving the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Owners of these devices are saddened by this news, but Cooper also states that “they are always developing new phones and making sure that they get the latest updates.”

This is the first official news on the matter, hopefully Sony will make an official statement on their Jelly bean upgrade plans soon. Since both these devices are not getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that most likely means that no other Xperia devices from 2011 will be getting an update either. That is just speculation though, there is still hope for other Xperia devices. It is likely that Xperia devices from 2012 will get an update to Jelly Bean, but any official news or timing hasn’t been released or mentioned yet.

Are you sad to hear that these devices won’t be getting an update to Jelly Bean? Will you be getting an upgrade because of this? Let us know in the comments!

Behind the Scenes at the Olympic Opening Ceremony with Samsung

Last Night, in London, we saw Samsung’s Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III involved in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Now Samsung, a global Olympic partner, has taken us behind the scenes, showing how Olympic staff members and Olympic performers have been using their Android phones. In addition to that, the Samsung Galaxy Note appeared in last nights show in Hyde Park. Olympic organizers, like Head of Ceremonies Martin Green, use the Note to manage day-to-day work preparing for the games. And from the looks of it, Olympic dancers got some shiny white Galaxy Notes for doing what they do best!
