International HTC One X has a new custom ROM baked from leaked RUU

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 04:04 PM PDT

HTC One X

If you've got a Tegra 3 edition of the HTC One X, and like to tweak and tinker, there's a new ROM out today you'll probably want to take a look at. Over at XDA, Football (yes, WM users, that Football) has cranked out a new Sense ROM based on the leaked 2.15.401.5 RUU. It's Sense 4.1, based on Android 4.0.4, and has a huge list of changes and improvements from past versions of Football's MaXimus ROMs.

  • Based on new RUU 2.15.401.5
  • Android 4.0.4
  • Sense 4.1
  • Fixed Live Wallpapers
  • Improved UI speed
  • Improved battery life
  • New kernel
  • New Radio 2.1204.127.19
  • Activated native EQS
  • Fixed Video Playback on Stock Kernel
  • Enabled hardware acceleration in 3rd-party video players
  • Bug fixes and a slew of application version updates

Like most late-model HTC devices, you'll have to flash the boot image in fastboot, but other than that it's the same easy ClockWorkMod flash we're all used to. There's full instructions and all the resources in the source link. Keep in mind that this isn't for the AT&T version, which got it's own update yesterday. Happy flashing!

Android Central international round-up - August 4, 2012

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 02:59 PM PDT

Android Central

As we leave July behind, we're just three weeks away from the IFA 2012 show in Berlin, one of the biggest consumer electronics events in Europe. This time around we're expecting new Android stuff from Samsung, Sony and maybe Motorola, and we already have plenty of info on what we're likely to see in Berlin.

Samsung confirmed this week that it'll be debuting the next Galaxy Note smartphone at an "Unpacked" event on Aug. 29. Rumors suggest a bump up to a 5.5-inch screen, and the possibility of a quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos chip on-board. Samsung never does anything small, so it's possible we may see some new tablets too, including the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Note 10.1

It looks like this year's IFA will be big for Sony, too. The Japanese manufacturer looks set to unveil four new smartphones -- the Xperia T, Xperia J, Xperia SL and Xperia GX, and many of these reared their heads this week in leaked photos and renders. Also on the cards is another Android tablet, dubbed the "Xperia Tablet," which appeared this week in a set of leaked slides. Sony's continued its use of the "folded magazine" design first seen in the Tablet S, but has slimmed things down a bit, and replaced the plastic chassis with a sleeker aluminum shell.

Check out a selection of the major international Android news stories below. If you've got news, be sure to tip us at the usual address.

Panasonic Flag Tags review - free and easy Olympic patriotism

Android Central

Panasonic Flag Tags is another one of the handful of official London 2012 Olympics apps available for Android. Simply put, it takes any portrait photos and transposes a national map on top, to make it look like the subject is wearing patriotic facepaint. It’s simple, but the timing is perfect for hardcore Olympics fans that want to show their pride in social networking profile pictures.

There are a bunch of Olympics apps out there - feel free to take a look at our roundup if you're looking for more, particularly for live video streams or catching up on the latest scores.

EA shows off Real Racing 3, we all gaze at its beauty

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 02:49 AM PDT

Electronic Arts has gone and published the first trailer of forthcoming sequel, Real Racing 3. And boy oh boy does it look good. Trailers are supposed to show off their subject in its best light, but this so called "pre alpha footage" leaves us very excited to see the finished game.

Real Racing 3 is also set to include a selection of real life tracks, such as the formidable Laguna Seca, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the home of British Motorsport, Silverstone.

What we don't actually know for sure though, is that the title will definitely be coming to Android. However, given that Real Racing 2 made its way into Google Play -- which is currently on sale by the way -- we're quietly confident that we'll be seeing this one. We need to see this one. It'll be out sometime later this year, and is most certainly one to watch out for.

Celebrate Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the Jelly Belly live wallpaper

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 04:58 PM PDT

Jelly Belly live wallpaper

Personally, I'm not really a fan of live wallpapers but I am a fan of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and arguably more importantly, Jelly Belly jelly beans (except the Harry Potter ones, those are kinda blah!). Jelly Belly looking to have a little fun with the release of Jelly Bean and create some brand recognition has built a pretty awesome jelly bean live wallpaper that is available for free in the Google Play Store. Jelly Belly jelly bean jar, as it is called is one of the more interactive live wallpapers I've used and it offers a cool set of features to go along with it:

  • Tap the screen to drop more jelly beans into your jar
  • Touch and hold a jelly bean, then drag, spin or flick it
  • Shake the phone or tilt it upside down to clear
  • Invent your own games, like "Jelly Belly Volleybean" - don't let the bean hit the bottom!
  • Choose your favorite flavors to display, like Buttered Popcorn or Very Cherry
  • Change the level of gravity to affect the drop/tilt/flick features

One feature that I was glad to see Jelly Belly not overlook was the ability to go ahead change the background images. They include a nice Jelly Belly one with the package that has some different colors to choose from. If you dig live wallpapers, give it a go. This is one even I might keep around for a while.
