comScore: Android now own 51.6% of the mobile market, Samsung still leading the OEMs

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 02:49 PM PDT

We wait for comScore report every month because they keep us updated with the mobile statistics in the USA. Just like the last report, Samsung is still winning from all the other smartphone vendors, and Android is still sitting on the "throne of mobile operating systems", but there are just some slight changes. Compared to the previous quarter, Android got .6% increase making a total of 51.6%. Apple grew 1.7%, which is actually a huge increase, and on the other side; RIM, Microsoft and Symbian faced a decrease.

The reason Android is leading and iPhone is just behind it, is the fail of famous OS of their times like RIM and Symbian, there are losing customers on daily basis, which's actually a plus for either Google or Apple. Talking about top mobile OEMs, Samsung is leading but they faced a little decrease; also LG and Motorola. Only HTC and Apple got a little increase in their sales, and probably the reason HTC got a 0.4% increase is the good sale of the One X and others in the states. Though Samsung came out with the Galaxy S III this summer, but it seems we might see an increase in upcoming reports, so fingers crossed.

Tell us what do you think about it in the comment box below.

Google Wallet now accepts all major credit cards, debit cards

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 11:41 AM PDT

In perhaps the biggest announcement since it was unveiled two summers ago, Google Wallet headed for the cloud. An announcement from Robin Dua (head of Product Management) tells us that the shift means that Google Wallet will now support all major credit cards and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

To support all credit and debit cards, we changed our technical approach to storing payment cards. The Google Wallet app now stores your payment cards on highly secure Google servers, instead of in the secure storage area on your phone. A wallet ID (virtual card number) is stored in the secure storage area of the phone, and this is used to facilitate transactions at the point of sale. Google instantly charges your selected credit or debit card. This new approach speeds up the integration process for banks so they can add their cards to the Wallet app in just a few weeks.

For those who worry about security, the new cloud-based Google Wallet ensures that a lost or stolen smartphone will not spell certain doom and bogus charges.  Users will be able to remotely disable their mobile wallet app from the web, adding even more peace of mind for the mobile payment option.  Of course, the Google Wallet app still uses a password and Google always suggests using a PIN or lock screen on your device.

Google updates developer policies with eye on consumer satisfaction

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 08:33 AM PDT

Google has made some adjustments to their Android developer policies and has begun sending out notifications via email.  If you're an Android developer yourself then chances are you might have seen this email by now.

Not a great deal has changed from before however things look to get better in the eye of the consumer.  For instance, Google will begin restricting names and icons that closely resemble other apps.  As for advertising and notifications, developers must not do anything that negatively impacts the user experience. What's more, Google is taking a more proactive approach in advising what is and isn't allowed on Google Play.  Going further, developers will see specific examples of practices that violate spam policies.

Hello Google Play Developer,

We are constantly striving to make Google Play a great community for developers and consumers. This requires us to update our policies when we launch new features, like subscription billing, and also when we see unhealthy behavior, like deceptive app names and spammy notifications. This email is to notify you that we've made some changes to our policies which are highlighted below.

  • We've added clearer details to the payment policy, and guidelines on how we will handle cancellations in our new subscription billing feature
  • We are restricting the use of names or icons confusingly similar to existing system apps in order to reduce user confusion
  • We are providing more detail on the kinds of dangerous products that are not allowed on Google Play. For example, apps that disclose personal information without authorization are not allowed.
  • We are giving more examples of practices that violate the spam policy.

Additionally, we are adding a new section that addresses ad behavior in apps. First, we make it clear that ads in your app must follow the same rules as the app itself. Also, it is important to us that ads don't negatively affect the experience by deceiving consumers or using disruptive behavior such as obstructing access to apps and interfering with other ads.

Please take a look at the Google Play Developer Program Policy at http://play.google.com/about/developer-content-policy.html to see all the changes and make sure your app complies with our updated policies.

Any new apps or app updates published after this notification will be immediately subject to the latest version of the Program Policy.  If you find any existing apps in your catalog that don't comply, we ask you to fix and republish the application within 30 calendar days of receiving this email.  After this period, existing applications discovered to be in violation may be subject to warning or removal from Google Play.

Regards,
Google Play Team

Google postpones consumer launch of Nexus Q in order to “make it even better”

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 07:34 AM PDT

Google has seemingly killed the Nexus Q as we know it and does not plan to release the device we saw/received at Google IO in June.  The dense set-top sphere has been indefinitely delayed while Google aims to make the product "even better", presumably adding new features and abilities.

For those of you who pre-ordered one of the devices, Google will still be sending that out to you at no cost.  Now calling it a"dev unit", Google indicates that these will begin shipping "soon", maybe within a week.  Going forward, though, things are a bit unclear.

As to what is being changed within the Nexus Q remains unclear at this point, however it's likely a software update to allow for additional capabilities.  Should a hardware redesign be in order, things could take a while before they are back on track.  Considering its high ($299) price tag and short list of tricks, the tepid reviews for the Nexus Q are justified.

Indeed, the ability to pre-order has been pulled for now, however you can still sign up for notification of status changes and news.

FIX IT!

How would you "make it better"?  Leave a comment below with your suggestions to improve the Nexus Q.
