Samsung, Boost Mobile, and Virgin Mobile schedule something ‘big’ for August 22

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 01:25 PM PDT

Samsung, along with prepaid carriers Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile, have scheduled a press mixer for August 22.  As to what we might expect remains unclear at this point, however it has to be something big.  How do we know?  The invitation says so, silly.  Will it be a Samsung Galaxy S III announcement?  Could it be Galaxy Note-related?  We'll find out in but a few weeks!

Five for Friday: Fantasy football apps for Android

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 12:56 PM PDT

It's that time of year where faithful (American) football fans start getting anxious and antsy.  Not because they're worried about how their favorite club is going to perform in the upcoming season.  No, it's the virtual team that gets these folks all worked up.  Fantasy football season is upon us.

We've put together a collection of five apps that will help Android users create, manage, and track fantasy football teams.  We know there are scores of other apps available to choose from but we think these five are a solid place to start.  We'd love to hear what Android app(s) you are using for fantasy football.  Is it one of these or do you prefer a different title?

This week's topic: Fantasy football apps for Android

ESPN Fantasy Football 2012

The official ESPN Fantasy Football app features full team management (start/bench players, add, drop, and claim players off waivers, propose, trades), and the ability to post messages to your league's message board.  Stay in the know with up-to-the-minute scoring and stats as well as personalized push notifications for injuries, substitutions, and scoring updates. Of course you're the smartest guy in the room but it doesn't hurt to have news, videos and tweets from ESPN's fantasy analysts on your side. Note that you'll not be able to manage past or future teams and that this is for 2012 only.

NFL.com Fantasy Football 2012

If you've got an NFL.com fantasy football team then you'll want to download this free app.  Details are exactly what you'd think they are, including registration of a team, live scores, player news, and other basic management.  Have more than one team?   This app lets you control everything across each of your clubs and provides ability to set lineups anywhere and everywhere.  NFL.com also promises new features before the official start of the 2012 NFL season.

Yahoo! Fantasy Football '12

The web's most popular fantasy football service's mobile companion is as rich it gets. Like the others, it provides live scoring and stat tracking, full roster management, and message board access. Have a particular matchup you want to track?  Yahoo! allows for that across current, past, and upcoming matchups.  Login options include Yahoo!, Facebook and Google.

CBS Sports Pro Football

Not specifically designed for fantasy football, the CBS app is a great sports app to have for following football in general.  It's been nearly 9 months since the last update so we're not sure if they'll add anything new for the 2012 season.  Details include live fantasy scores, lineup settings, add/drop players, stats, player news, on demand video, and expert analysis. Speaking more broadly, this is also one of our favorite ways of following professional football.

Fantasy Football Insider

Whether you're participating in an ESPN, NFL.com, or Yahoo! fantasy football league, this app is a great way to supplement your mobile experience.  Get stats, standings, schedules, rumors, news, insider information, and more to stay a step of your frenemies.  Live coverage, videos, integrated Twitter feeds, and other great things are but a click away.  Bonus premium content is also available to PFW subscribers!

Samsung details next-gen Exynos 5 Dual processor

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 08:23 AM PDT

Samsung earlier this week, detailed its next-generation mobile processor, the EXYNOS 5 Dual, in a blog post..  If you thought today's current smartphones and tablets had beast hardware then wait until these things arrive.

Key specifications for the system-on-a-chip (SoC) include the following:

  • Cortex-A15 dual core (with each core running at 1.7GHz speed)
  • Up to 2560×1600 WQXGA display support
  • 1080p 60fps video hardware
  • High-speed interfaces USB 3.0 and SATA3
  • Image Signal Processor (ISP) of 8M pixel 30fps
  • OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenCL 1.1, and DirectX 11 support

Head to the blog post to get all the details which, frankly, tends to float just above our heads.  As many of you know, we're not the blog for intricate hardware details and benchmarks. All we know is that this stuff is going to be pretty darn epic.

Thanks to those of you who passed this along.

HTC: Remaining Android 4.0 updates due by end of August

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 07:13 AM PDT

HTC expects to wrap up their Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates by the end of August, according to a company representative. A member of the HTC Facebook team, answering a question from a fan, indicated the final handset updates should be rolled out in the coming weeks.  After hitting us with a rapid succession of 4.0 there are only a couple of models left to see their desserts, including the Rhyme, Desire S, Incredible 2, and Thunderbolt.   Sounds like we should expect to hear an announcement from HTC or Verizon pretty soon.
