Instagram 3.0 debuts on Android

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 11:16 AM PDT

Instagram today announced a new version of their popular Android (and iOS) application which adds in a number of handy features.  This particular release (3.0) centers around the common theme of browsing experience, most notably with the debut of Photo Maps and redesigned user profiles.

We've introduced a new and unique way to browse your photos and others' photos on a map, which means you're no longer constrained to browsing through page after page of photos... all the screens in our app to be more visually consistent and polished. You'll notice new layouts throughout the app that feel fresh, yet familiar. Our engineers have also been hard at work making sure that the browsing experience is as fast as possible. ..introduced infinite scrolling in feeds so that you can quickly see more photos while browsing around the app.

Users will also notice that the uploading page is refreshed with a new layout and additional options.  It's possible to toggle the Photo Map setting, upload to Tumblr, Flickr, Foursquare, and other avenues.

Google Play gift cards look ready for retail

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 07:28 AM PDT

One of the biggest complaints we've had for Google Play (Android Market) since its first days is that there is no gift card option.  With other companies (iTunes, Amazon, Barnes & Noble) allowing consumers to pre-pay or add gift credits, the Google Play store just has a glaring hole.  Those days look to be over as pictures of Google Play gift cards are surfacing online.  We'll go ahead and assume that these things are packaged up and ready to head of to your local drug store or superstore.  If Google wants the Play Store to be talked about in the same manner as other distribution channels they'll want to get these in retail environments ASAP.

Galaxy S Blaze Q gets new name, release date

T-Mobile's next Android smartphone was set to be called the Galaxy S Blaze Q and was should have arrived yesterday, August 15.  Alas, neither of those will prove to be true, if a recent TmoNews article is correct.  According to the blog, the handset will get a new name when it eventually makes it debut.  Look, instead for the Galaxy S Relay 4G.  Yes, yet another wordy name for an Android phone.
