Sony Xperia J outed to public ahead of release

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 02:58 PM PDT

As some readers know, Russian tech site Mobile-Review has revealed and extensively previewed a number of Xperia (prototype) handsets ahead of their official announcements. They have done it again with the Sony Xperia J. Like we have previously seen, they have pictures of every angles and a full review already up on their website. Overall the phone looks pretty nice for a mid-range phone of course.  Chances are good we’ll see something in regards to the Xperia J from Sony at IFA next week.

Mobile-Review has come to the following conclusion… Keep in mind it’s roughly translated.

It seems that Sony hit upon the way to return to the market and become stronger… Advantage of ICS is temporary, but it will be well received by many customers. In any case, the model Xperia J – one of those that deserve attention because of its price and the fact that it is something new from Sony…

So what do you guys and gals think about this phone? Let us know it the comments below!

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 01:06 PM PDT

MetroPCS has unraveled a bunch of new “goodies” for it’s current and future customers! First on the list, and available as a promotion, is the carrier’s new 4G LTE.  Customers can get unlimited talk, texting, and 4G LTE data for $55/month for a single line. Families can join in by paying $50 a month for second, third, and fourth lines. Though the deal is being considered a promotion, the expiration date is actually unknown for now.   MetroPCS President Thomas Keys told CNET that the end of the promotion will depend on the adoption rate by consumers.

We didn’t want to set an artificial timeline

The second thing up today is a new Android phone, the LG Motion 4G. Available for $149 along with the new plan, the handset arrives in the coming week. The LG Motion 4g is equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 3.5-inch display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1080-pixel HD video recorder.

Are you on MetroPCS and considering the plan or new phone? Maybe even thinking about switching from your current cell phone provider? Let us know in the comments below!

Xperia Nexus and Optimus Nexus tossed into rumor mill

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:58 AM PDT

If past history is an indicator, the next Nexus release should be arriving in the late fall or early winter.  As such, we ought to be getting a slew of rumors and details for the next “Pure Google” experience.  Such was the case this morning with the word of a “Superior” Samsung Galaxy Nexus successor.  Before the ink had dried on our post we learned that Sony and LG have some Nexus goodies in the work as well.

Tech site AndroidNoodles (translate) is advising that Japanese carrier DoCoMo is expecting Nexus releases from Samsung, LG, and Sony.  Rumored names for the devices are exactly what you would expect out of all three, in the Galaxy Nexus II, Optimus Nexus, and Xperia Nexus.  There’s nothing else to share at this point beyond the names but it’s exciting nonetheless.

It doesn’t surprise us to see multiple Nexus models rumored as we expect up to five of them, maybe for November 5.  With Android set to celebrate its fifth year anniversary, consumers may have some rather fun stuff to look forward to at the end of the year.

LG turning things up a notch with rumored Optimus G

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 07:48 AM PDT

LG is rumored to be cranking things up a bit with their next Android smartphone, the so-called Optimus G.  According to Korean website Asia Today (translate), LG is cooking up a quad-core LTE device with a 4.7-inch IPS True HD display, 2GB RAM, and a 13-megapixel camera.

Expected to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the handset is said to feature LG Optimus UI 3.0 and will take design cues from the Optimus L series.  It’s not quite clear which processor is going to power the Optimus G however we’ve seen some calling for a quad-core Snapdragon S4 chipset.

With IFA taking place in late August and early September, we might see LG make some noise for the Optimus G.  Should that be the case, we anticipate that the U.S. might get a variant a few months from now, perhaps on Verizon or Sprint.

Alleged Galaxy Nexus successor details emerge

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 07:17 AM PDT

The first alleged details for the Galaxy Nexus successor have started trickling online and, from the sound of things, we’re in for a moderate refresh.  The information, obtained by SamMobile, advises that the codename is rumored to be “Superior” with the model number of GT-I9260.

The hardware sees improvements along a few fronts, including a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a slightly better 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, and the addition of the microSD card.  Everything else, for now, is likely going to be the same as in the Galaxy Nexus.

Should these rumors prove to be correct, we ought to see more details uncovered over the next few weeks. If history is any indicator then we might be around two months away from getting an announcement.

As a reminder, there’s also whispers that Google may have up to five Nexus models ready to go for the fifth anniversary of Android.  Then again, if Google were to stick with one hardware maker for the next Pure Android handset, Samsung seems a likely choice.

Acer intros Liquid Gallant and Liquid Gallant Pro

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 06:08 AM PDT

Acer today announced its next Android smartphone, the Liquid Gallant and its dual-SIM variant, the Liquid Gallant Pro.  Due starting in September, the phones are entry-level priced with specs that make for a great first Android device.  Details include a 1GHz processor, 4GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, a 5-megapixel camera, and microSD expansion.  Available in Gentle Black and Ceramic White color options, the two also come with your typical Android requisites including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 1500 mAh battery.

Pricing is around $235 off-contract and pre-orders have apparently been offered for more than a few weeks now.  Based on history, we’d not expect to see either model offered in the United States, especially with a carrier.

Motorola enables bootloader unlocking for supported devices, root users rejoice

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 05:38 PM PDT

Motorola hasn’t always had the best track record when it comes to bootloaders and rootable devices, but they’re apparently jumping on the open Android train with this latest announcement. User can now unlock bootloaders on their Motorola device, much like HTCDev.com. There are tons of warnings, and not every device is supported, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

You’ll have to download the Android SDK, some Motorola drivers, and read all the instructions, but this tool could speed up the rooting process for some device. Whether this justifies downloading so much content is up to you.

If you’re eager to actually unlock a Motorola device with a tool built by Motorola (we never thought we would see those words in that order), you can head on over to the Motorola bootloader unlock page to get started. And of course, pursue at your own risk.

So, who else is surprised by this move? Is anyone planning to use this tool to unlock a bootloader? Drop a comment below!

Mid-range Samsung leakapalooza

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 05:13 PM PDT

Several mid-range, Galaxy-branded Samsung phones have arisen today, and it looks like Sammy is shooting for multiple carriers at once here. Granted, each device is a little different from the next. Four carriers are rumored to be getting some decent devices in the coming months, and while we have a few details, not much is known about some of them.

First up is the Galaxy Discover, allegedly slated for a launch on TracFone. It’s rocking ICS, a fair amount of internal storage, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, and a MicroSD card slot that offers up to 32GB of additional, external storage. Sadly, that’s all the rumored information on TracFone’s very first Android device. We’re hoping it’ll have at least a dual-core processor, but only time will tell!

Moving along, we have two devices for Verizon: the Galaxy Stellar and Stratosphere 2. We’ve actually heard a fair bit about the Stellar, which first leaked as the “Jasper,” and got its new name just days later. Earlier reports showed the Stellar packing a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, but the latest rumors point to a 1.2GHz CPU. At this point, it could go either way. Other outed specs include LTE, a nice 2,100mAh battery, and some good old Android 4.0. The Stratosphere 2, on the other hand, is obviously the sequel to Big Red’s semi-popular QWERTY slider. Not much has changed in this device, apart from some S Beam, S Voice, global GSM roaming goodies, and SAFE (Samsung Approved for Enterprise) certification, which means we could be seeing some units hitting corporate offices in the near future.

The regional carriers are also getting in on some mid-range love, as MetroPCS may be getting the Galaxy Admire 4G. This little guy is rumored to look like an original Galaxy S, and the only specs that have been thrown out might lead us to believe that it is. The Admire 4G is reportedly launching with LTE support and… Android 2.3. Every part of us is hoping that this is just some kind of typo, and that it’ll launch with a newer Android version, but the rumormill is ever-changing.

But back to the bigger dogs in the fight, namely Sprint. They’re rumored to be getting a device called the Galaxy Victory 4G LTE, Despite the unnecessarily long name, it’ll bring Android 4.0, a 5MP rear camera, NFC, and a WVGA display of unknown size to the third largest carrier.

And finally, it looks like T-Mobile users won’t be left out in the cold. We’ve heard bits and pieces about the Samsung Galaxy Relay 4G, and some new images give us a better look at the device. Aside from the QWERTY keyboard, it has roughly the same form factor as the Galaxy S3, but crammed into a smaller package.

Just to refresh your memory, the Relay 4G will most likely launch with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (most likely a Snapdragon S4), Ice Cream Sandwich, NFC, S Voice, a 4-inch display, and several of the useful gestures found on the S3.

Now, none of the aforementioned devices are completely ready to hit shelves, which is probably why we haven’t heard of any release dates yet. Hopefully more details will start to trickle out in the coming weeks. But until then, keep your eyes on AndroidGuys for all the latest news.

So, any plans to get one of these mid-rangers? Which one are you interested in?Let us know in the comments!
