LG LS970 destined for Sprint as Eclipse hits FCC

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 10:49 AM PDT

Existing or potential Sprint customers looking for a high end smartphone other than the Samsung Galaxy S III  may be heartened to know a new offering from LG took another step toward its possible Halloween release. Showing up in the FCC database are documents for the LG LS970 which we believe is destined for the Sprint LTE network as the Eclipse.

Powered by a quad-core Krait processor mated with an Adreno 320 GPU, the handset is believed to carry 2GB of RAM and a screen running at 1280 x 720 resolution. According to filings, the LS970 will have 3G and 4G radios, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and SVLTE, which provides voice and data at the same time.

New document in Apple, Samsung trial show Samsung’s use of iPhone as standard

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 10:11 AM PDT

As a week of courtroom drama drew to a close in the Apple v. Samsung patent case, a new document surfaced showing how Samsung used Apple's features as a measuring stick for their own development. The document was an internal analysis comparing the Samsung Behold 3 (also known as the Vibrant) to the iPhone. Some of the features that Samsung identified included things like a bouncing visual effect, the slide to unlock feature, and even the transition time when entering passwords.

It remains to be seen whether the jury will see this as an attempt to copy the iPhone's features or as identification of capabiities and features that could be improved upon or done in a different manner.

Samsung Exynos 5 Dual-Core SoC May Possibly Bring Retina-Level Displays And Performance

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 06:17 AM PDT

Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 5 dual-core SoC we told you about yesterday is certainly expected to bring a new level of performance to Android devices. However, there’s the thought that the 1.7GHz chip will not only bring faster speeds, but it will also bring Retina-level displays on the various devices that are powered by the superchip. The thought is that traditional ARM A9 chips (i.e. Tegra 3 and Apple’s A5 chips) have superior power usage, but are a bit limited when it comes to the best performance possible. The new ARM A15 chip (which the Exynos 5 is based off of) is made for devices demanding peak performance— at the sacrifice of slightly increased power usage.

In addition, the ARM A15 chip will be capable of handling and supporting advanced GPUs such as the Mali-T604. In case you’ve forgotten, the GPU paired with a chip like the Exynos 5 is capable of supporting a resolution of 2560×1600 and has a 12.8GB/s theoretical memory bandwidth, while adding 800MHz LPDDR3 RAM in order to encode and decode HD video at 60FPS.

All of this theoretical performance talks has me way too hot and bothered— all we need now is Sammy to come out and launch a device featuring the technology.

Dyzplastic Android Mini Collectibles Series 03 To Arrive By End of Q3, Includes More Flexible Arms

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 10:32 PM PDT

Dyzplastic‘s Android Collectibles are very popular amongst us Android geeks, and the Series 03 collection we got a peek at last month has been delayed. Originally, the series was supposed to be available by the end of Q2 this year, around June, but it’s now been pushed out to the end of Q3.

But these are plastic dolls? Why the delay? Well, apparently these dolls are going through a small operation to get ball-jointed arms installed. This means a greater range of motion for the arms, including being able to move them forward, backward, in-and-out as well as up-and-down. Now your Android can actually wave properly rather than raising his arm straight up.

The ball joint won’t be used on all Android collectibles. Andrew Bell tells us on the Dyzplastics blog that they’ll “be using ball joints for Artists Series as well as selectively on special editions in the future where appropriate.”

Pictures after the break.

Looks like the wait just might be worth it! Who’s planning on ordering these?

Drop Test? That’s Old School! How About Dragging Your Galaxy S III While it’s Attached to Your Car? [Video]

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 09:14 PM PDT

I don’t know about you, but every time someone performs a drop test on a phone I cringe. The thought of taking a $600 device and trashing it intentionally is mind boggling, even though it’s for science! Now this technically isn’t a drop test, but it definitely puts the Samsung Galaxy S III through its paces. In the following video, YouTube user "aperfectgalaxy" goes bananas with a brand new iPhone 4S and pits it against a brand new Galaxy S III with Corning Gorilla glass to test the strength of both their screens. Can you guess the outcome? Hit the break to find out!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Pretty impressive right? You can see the Galaxy S III comes out on top with little damage. It’s amazing considering they dragged the phones behind a car on some pretty intense terrain. Now that you know your screen is tough, are you going to drag it behind your car? If you do, make sure you email us the videos!

Kyocera Rise Coming to Sprint August 19th for Just $19.99

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 09:02 PM PDT

Sprint has been moving full steam ahead with their new LTE network, but that’s not stopping them from releasing 3G phones. We recently got our hands on the Kyocera Rise at CTIA, and now the phone has been confirmed to be launching on August 19th for $19.99 on a 2 year contract.

This 3G-only slider features a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320) display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, a 1,500mAh battery, and will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, the Kyocera Rise will soon gain support for Sprint’s Direct Connect push-to-talk. I know what you're thinking, this isn’t a powerful phone by any stretch of the imagination, but you know what? Having low-end phones allows for those on a tight budget to get their hands on the Android OS, and that my friends is the beauty of Android.

Samsung, Boost and Virgin Mobile all together in New York on August 22nd

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 08:41 PM PDT

Looks like Samsung, Boost and Virgin Mobile are planning a get-together for an announcement in New York on August 22nd. Other than the “Join us for big mobile news” sign on the image, nothing else has been said from either party on what this announcement entails. Our guess is an announcement of a new Samsung phone, perhaps their release of the Samsung Galaxy S III? Either way, we’ll all find out in two weeks!

Sprint Offering Free ZTE Optik Tablet With Purchase of Any Smartphone From Aug 12 To Sep 30

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 08:25 PM PDT

Owning both a smartphone and tablet is certainly a luxury, sometimes one is hard to attain for someone, much less both. According to sources from Techno Buffalo, Sprint is trying to make that easy for you by offering a free ZTE Optik tablet if you purchase any smartphone along with a 2 year agreement from August 12th through September 30th.

If you’re not familiar with the ZTE Optik, here’s a quick rundown on its specs:

  • 7-inch WXGA display (1280 x 800 resolution)
  • 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor
  • 16GB of internal memory
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4,000 mAh battery
  • 5-megapixel rear-facing camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • Android 3.2 Honeycomb

Remember, it’s absolutely any smartphone, even the Samsung Galaxy Nexus that’s currently available for free with a two year contract. While this is a sweet deal in itself, the kicker is that you also have to tack on a two year data plan on the tablet. Either way, free is always good, right?

Motorola RAZR XT910 Android 4.0 ICS update roll-out begins today

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 08:03 PM PDT

It certainly is better to be late than never, and that’s exactly what the international Motorola RAZR (XT910) can say considering the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the device has finally arrived. Through various sources, the update should be rolling out today and if you haven’t checked already, go ahead into settings to see if the update is available.

Apparently, the hold up to the update is due to T-Mobile as they refused to sign off on the update because they wanted to put their own “customizations” to the ROM (ala the mySense Espresso). While that’s very disappointing to hear, let’s just be happy that it has finally arrived.

If you own an international RAZR and received the update, we would love to know about it in the comments section!

More evidence that a Samsung Galaxy S III in black is on its way

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 07:51 PM PDT

Yesterday we reported of a black Samsung Galaxy S III image that leaked on Samsung’s Facebook page, thus assuming that a black Galaxy S III may very well be on its way. Today, more evidence has surfaced on this possibility when an Android Police tipster sent them an image of a Carphone Warehouse’s internal product database that clearly shows “Samsung Galaxy S III Black.”

Obviously this is still a rumor and things could very well change, but signs are certainly pointing towards an imminent release of a black S III. Would a black Galaxy S III interest any of you guys, or has marble white and pebble blue kept you content?
