MIUI has proven to be a highly desirable aftermarket firmware among the developer community, and today marks the initial release of Jelly Bean builds for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus S. Play your Android games in style; Check out this homemade PS3 controller Samsung Galaxy Nexus dock

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 02:54 PM PDT

Lets face it, gaming on an Android device (no matter how big the screen is) can be quite challenging, especially if you’re playing first-person-shooters or even games from an emulator. Wouldn’t it be a dream to use a console’s controller to play these games with, perhaps a PlayStation 3 controller? A Reddit user by the name of TheRealBigLou has done just that by creating his own homemade PS3 controller dock for his Samsung Galaxy Nexus where he’s able to play his Android games with the wonderful controls of a PS3 controller. You may think this feat took some complicated contraptions to make, but it actually only took a couple of Boston clips, some rubber bands, an NFC sticker and a creative mind to achieve this amazing creation.

TheRealBigLou was also kind enough to give a description of how he made this:

So I had a Galaxy Nexus and a Dualshock 3 controller… this was great for playing games but I always had a problem of propping my phone up and being close enough to see what was going on. I decided to create a dock and in true ghetto fashion, I used random office supplies I had lying around.

Essentially, I took 3 Boston clips and 4 rubber bands and fit them together so that the arms of one clip hold the phone while the arms of another held onto the Dualshock 3. I bent the arms with pliers to create better gripping strength. I originally used normal rubber bands but switched to the black hair rubber bands you see in the pictures. This was for both aesthetics but also because they are stronger and hold more tension for their size.

A smaller Boston clip wedges between two larger ones to keep them spread apart but also to make the structure more rigid. One rubber band provides tension for the arms holding the phone, another provides tension to clip to the controller, a third one hold these arms to the smaller clip, and the last one holds the clip part of the big Boston clips together.

I also added heat-shrink tubing to the arms that hold the phone. I ran out but plan to do the same for the arms that clip onto the controller. This just helps it grip better but also protects the devices. An NFC sticker is added to automatically set up the Sixaxis app.

Definitely quite innovative, don’t you think? I for one could use this and would make it much easier and more enjoyable to play your games. Any of our readers out there willing to give this “DIY” project a go? If so, comment away and send us your pics if you were able to successfully duplicate this!

Featured Play Store Newbie: Turn your Android phone into a server with Servers Ultimate [Tools]

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 01:46 PM PDT

If you have an old Android phone laying around and love to tinker, I have a really good app for you to try. It’s called Servers Ultimate, and it was created by XDA member Themuzz. What it does is turn your Android phone into a server, and you have your choice of 10 dfferent types: DLNA, DNS, Dynamic DNS, Email, FTP(S), Proxy, SMS Gateway, Time, HTTP(S) and/or (secure) WebDAV. It doesn’t stop there because you can run multiple instances of the same server type and the same time.

This means you can set a streaming media server with the DLNA option, share files via FTP, set up your own web server, or even host your own email server. You’re probably thinking you need to be rooted, but guess what? You don’t. Themuzz says there are way too many features to list on the Google Play Store page, but hit the break to see what this puppy can do.

Features:

  • Add a Dynamic DNS Updater using the local or public IP of your device
  • Start/Stop servers automatically when connected/disconnected from a specified WIFI network, or on boot, or directly when the app starts
  • Set a custom name and port per server
  • No rooted device is needed
  • Set a WIFI lock, keep the device alive and/or keep the device fully awake (including the screen)
  • Optionally save all the server data to the sdcard to prevent removal during upgrades
  • View all IP addresses of your device, including the public IP
  • Automatically email and clear the log when the maximum amount is reached
  • Verbose log (filter, email, etc)

Features summary per server type:

DLNA media server: add multiple roots, support for Samsung devices (television)

DNS server: caching, forward to dns server, use web dns server for requests, only access from certain IP's, add rules to block or change requests

Dynamic DNS updater: run dynamic updates to keep your server(s) available, select from predefined ddns services (set a custom URL, or choose from ChangeIP, DNSdynamic, DNSexit, DNSMadeEasy, DNS-O-Matic, DNSPark, DtDNS, DynDNS, easyDNS, eNom, HE.net, Joker, Namecheap, No-IP, ZoneEdit), set timer, username, password, hostname, SSL supported, update on connectivity change

Email server: POP3 and SMTP server, set domains, set users

FTP(S) server: allow access from certain IP's, enable SSL/FTPS Implicit (custom or our certificate), allow anonymous login, per user set username, password, document root, force stay in document root, allow write access, allow custom FTP commands (CUSTOM SENDLOG, CUSTOM STOP, CUSTOM VIBRATE)

Proxy server: only allow access from certain IP's, enable HTTPS requests, supports GET and POST, set tunneling by forwarding everything (allows the proxy to work for other protocols beside HTTP as well, like FTP), add rules to block or change requests

SMS Gateway: allow http access, allow access from certain IP's, add rules for incoming SMS (body, from), forward to SMS, email or URL, and add users with maximum amount of allowed sms per month

Time server: user the Network Time Protocol (NTP) or simple Time Protocol (TP)

Web, HTTP(s) server: use simple htaccess (.shtaccess) file to set directory specific configurations (like password, directory listing, encryption, upload, Server Side Includes, and way more!), enable SSL/HTTPS (custom or our certificate)

WebDAV server: enable SSL (custom or our certificate), only allow access from certain IP's, allow web browsing, allow HTTP digest authentication, add multiple users

There’s one other really nice feature to Servers Ultimate and that is that it’s FREE. Hit one of the download links below and for more information hit up the XDA thread below.

Barnes & Noble to Offer Nook Products and Content to the UK

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 11:42 AM PDT

Barnes & Noble announced today that it will be bringing its Nook products and digital content to the UK. The E-Ink based Nook Simple Touch and Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight will be the first two devices in the initial launch in the UK. That’s not all either– according to the UK Nook website, the Nook Tablet is coming soon as well. So this means those of you from the UK wanting a more powerful device should also know Barnes and Noble’s more advanced devices won’t be left out of the party. To compliment the devices, Barnes & Noble will provide “2.5 million titles” of its popular digital content that consists of books, children’s books, magazines, movies and apps. Barnes & Noble also confirmed the devices will launch in time for the holiday shopping season.

It seems apparent Barnes & Noble is trying to make a splash in the e-reader market outside the US, but they will face an uphill battle in the UK as the Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Apple’s vaunted iPad already leads the way. Only time will tell if this move will pay off.

Ice Cream Sandwich Update for Wi-Fi versions of the Motorola XYBOARD 10.1 and 8.2 Now Live

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Good news is always welcomed and it’s always a little sweeter when received on a Monday. Making good on their published timeline released two months ago, owners of the Wi-Fi version of Motorola’s XYBOARD tablets will get a taste of this sweet news as Motorola has officially rolled out Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 for both screen sizes (8.2 and 10.1).

Users can receive the update via Wi-Fi connection. Once connected to Wi-Fi you should receive a notification for the upgrade, but if you don’t, make sure to go to Settings/About Tablet/System Update and see if you can manually pull it. A few of the most notable features with the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich are re-sizable widgets, revamped notification features, and face unlock.  A full list of enhancements can be found after the break.

  • Updated Browser with faster rendering, zoom and pan: Users can also now save pages for offline reading and request desktop versions of websites.
  • Swipe to dismiss notifications and recent apps: You can now dismiss individual notifications and apps from the Recent Apps list with a simple swipe of a finger.
  • Redesigned app launcher: In All Apps launcher, you can now simply drag an app to get information about it, immediately uninstall it, or disable a pre-installed app.
  • New System Font for Improved Readability: An entirely new typeface (called Roboto) optimized for high resolution screens improves readability and brings a polished feel to the user interface.
  • Updated "People" Application: Replaces contacts and integrates seamlessly with Google+ and other social networks.
  • Improved text input and spell-checking: The keyboard now features improved accuracy to make text input faster. It also now includes an in-line spell checker to make corrections easier.
  • Type with your voice: Now you can simply touch the microphone on the keyboard and start talking to write emails, or any other text—more than 20 languages supported. Text appears in real time, so there's no waiting for server processing.
  • Richer and versatile imaging capabilities: For new flexibility and convenience while shooting video, you can now take snapshots at full video resolution just by tapping the screen as video continues to record. For capturing larger scenes, the camera introduces a single motion panorama mode. You can also launch camera directly from the Lockscreen. When you shoot videos, you can now choose from a number of silly faces and other fun effects which recognize individual facial features so you can give your friends big eyes, squeeze heads, make noses bigger, or change the scenery with background replacement.
  • Redesigned Gallery app with photo editor: To help pictures look their best, the Gallery now offers a powerful photo editor so you can crop and rotate pictures, set levels, remove red eyes, add effects, and much more.
  • Richer, resizable widgets: You can expand widgets to show more content, or shrink them to save space.
  • Quicker screen rotation
  • A new setting to choose whether the power button immediately locks the device or not: shows up only when you have a pattern, PIN or password lock, it then lets you set a timer for how long it takes to lock after pressing the sleep button.
  • Microsoft Exchange improvements with additional EAS policies
  • Improved stability
  • Face Unlock: Face Unlock is a new screen-lock option that lets you unlock your device with your face. It takes advantage of the device front-facing camera and state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to register a face during setup and then to recognize it again when unlocking the device. Just hold your device in front of your face to unlock, or use back up PIN or pattern.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 gets the iFixit Teardown Treatment

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 07:42 AM PDT

The folks over at iFixit have given the newly unveiled Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 one of their usual tear downs. Overall they give the new tablet a repairability score of 8 out of 10. Some of the highlights of the teardown are as follows:

  • 16 connectors – a boon for repairability!
  • The front glass and LCD can be separated and replaced individually (take that iPhone!)
  • Easily replaceable battery, even compared to the Nexus 7
  • Unscrewable EMI shield – first time seen by iFixit

One downside to note is that the battery capacity has been downgraded to 25.9 watt-hours, which was expected due to the device’s slimness. Is an easily repairable device a priority on your list? Hit up the comments and let us know what you think!
