Android-powered Nikon Coolpix uncovered

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 12:33 PM PDT

An Android-based Nikon Coolpix digital camera has been spied online just days before its rumored August 22 unveiling.  NikonRumors advises that there could actually be two models here based on the conflicting images.  We’re not in the position to argue either way at this point and can wait a few days to find out what’s going on. As it stands, the S800C looks to run Android 2.3 under the hood and should be a lot of fun for Instagram and photo editing fans.

AT&T ends two-year contract option for tablets

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 12:01 PM PDT

AT&T has seemingly stopped offering discounted tablets with two-year service agreements, according to details obtained by Engadget.  We’ve long said that carriers are silly to ask consumers to purchase tablets with the expectation that they sign a service contract.  Saving a hundred bucks or so up front has never been worth the price of climbing into bed with any wireless provider.   Of course, AT&T is still more than happy to hook you up with a tablet under their DataConnect and MobileShare plans.

Sony introduces Xperia SL

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 11:44 AM PDT

Sony today introduced its next Android smartphone, the Xperia SL, however they weren’t quite ready to divulge its release date, pricing, or expected markets.

Specifications for the Xperia SL are right in line with most of today’s Android handsets, and include a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chip, a 4.3-inch 1278×720 TFT display, 1GB RAM, and a 12.1-megapixel camera with auto focus.

We don’t know where this model will eventually arrive however we’d be very surprised if it came to the United States with a carrier.

Samsung debuts dual-SIM GALAXY S DUOS for Europe and other markets

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 07:45 AM PDT

Samsung Mobile has announced the next Android smartphone headed to Europe, unveiling the dual-SIM DUOS.  Expected to hit the streets starting in September, the Android 4.0 device features a 1GHz processor, 4GB internal storage, 4-inch (480x800) display, microSD expansion, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1500mAh battery. Samsung advises that the dual-SIM technology gives users added flexibility beyond having two phone numbers.

You also have the flexibility of selecting different billing plans for either SIM, switching between them at your convenience.

HTC can’t catch a break, losing $40 million with OnLive restructure

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 07:27 AM PDT

Poor HTC.  Those guys just can’t seem to catch a break lately.  With the last few years getting increasingly tougher for the quietly brilliant crew, last week’s OnLive kerfuffle is going to hurt quite a bit.  According to details surfacing today, HTC is set to lose $40 million from their investment.

As some of you may recall, HTC climbed into bed with OnLive back in early 2011 where it was expected that future smartphones and tablets would feature the gaming service.  Fast forward a year or so and we’ve yet to see much materialize from the deal. Now, with a new owner and trimmed down staff, OnLive hardly resembles the company that HTC was attracted to in the first place.

Samsung: ‘Magical moments’ coming August 29 with Galaxy Note II

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 07:13 AM PDT

Samsung has released a YouTube video to help drum up some excitement for their August 29 IFA announcement.  As if we needed something to push our hype needle a bit, the short clip is very light on product details or hints, and heavy on magic and mysterious.  We do get fleeting glimpses of the stylus coming out and being applied to the screen, but that’s about it.

What do you think of a bigger, faster Galaxy Note II?  Is it the kind of device you can get excited for or is it too big for your liking?

Droid Razr HD videos surface, show off features

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 06:56 AM PDT

A set of tutorial videos for the Droid Razr HD have surfaced online, showing off the device ahead of its eventual announcement.  Tied to a model number of XT926, the handset looks and feels like the next big Motorola release.

It’s not uncommon for these types of videos to hit a carrier’s YouTube account on the day of launch or shortly after.  It is little odd, however, for them to hit the internet from seemingly random user, which is the case.  Unfortunately, these videos have been closed down and the YouTube account shuttered.  Were you able to see the clips, you would find that they handset has a UI which closely matches that of the Atrix HD.

Motorola has a press event scheduled for September 5 where we fully expect to see the new Droid Razr HD unveiled.

Public transit schedules for Google Maps reaches one million

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 12:05 PM PDT

Since 2005, Google Maps has been collaborating with transit authorities to make our lives a whole lot easier. Today Google has well over 500 cities worldwide with transit stops marked.

Google understands that public transportation info is important to have at the palm of your hand. They have released a update to the Google Maps for Android app. They’ve made some changes to the Transit Lines layer, so that you can select a specific mode of public transportation (train, bus, tram or subway) to display on the mobile map, hiding the other modes. This is helpful in areas where there is a tight concentration of several types of public transit.

Whether you're looking for schedule and fare information, directions by public transit or nearby stations, Google Maps puts comprehensive, accurate and useful transit information at your fingertips. Update to the latest version of Google Maps for Android in the Google Play store.
