The Ruling Is In: Jury Rules In Favor Of Apple Over Samsung In Landmark Case And Ordered To Pay Over $1 Billion In Damages

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 04:51 PM PDT

The verdict is officially in folks— Apple has officially claimed victory over Samsung. Based off extensive review and hours of deliberation, the jury believes Samsung not only violated numerous Apple patents, but also Apple has not infringed on any of Samsung’s patents. Here’s a quick rundown of each verdict:

  • Jury finds Samsung infringement of Apple utility, design patents for some (though not all) products
  • Jury upholds Apple utility, design patents
  • Jury upholds Apple trade dress ’983
  • Jury finds Samsung “diluted” Apple’s registered iPhone, iPhone 3 and “Combination iPhone” trade dress on some products, not on others
  • No Apple infringement of Samsung utility patents
  • Jury found Samsung violated antitrust law by monopolizing markets related to the UMTS standard

As a result of the jury’s decision, Samsung is also ordered to pay an king’s ransom in damages— all to the tune of $1.05 billion, while no damages are assessed to Apple in Samsung’s countersuit.

Glu Mobile teases Blood and Glory: Legend, brings next-gen graphics to mobile

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 02:10 PM PDT

Recognized game developer, Glu Mobile, has just dropped the first teaser for it’s newest game. The new title, Blood and Glory: Legend, will serve as the sequel to the company’s wildly successful freemium Blood and Glory. Little is explained in the short video, but we do get a good look at some of the stunning visuals and vicious action players have come to expect from the franchise. The 30-second trailer shows a gladiator preparing to fight to the death in what is likely an ancient roman stadium filled with tens of thousands of eager spectators.

The graphic overhaul may indicate that Glu Mobile is finally ready to step up its game, considering the last iteration was already behind the competitors in terms of gameplay. Blood and Glory: Legend is listed as “coming soon”, so keep an eye out on the Play Store. In the meantime, you can catch the entire video for yourself after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar Headed to Verizon, Pre-loaded with Amazon Appstore?

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 01:21 PM PDT

We now have news of a new mid-range Samsung phone called the Galaxy Stellar that is headed to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. According to a leaked screenshot from Droid Life, the phone will cost $99 and include a few noteworthy features. For starters it’s listed as having a “Starter Mode”, which could be tied to the new Basic and Easy home screen modes in the Jelly Bean Galaxy SIII update. The more intriguing part is that this could be the first Android smartphone pre-loaded with the Amazon Appstore rather than the Play Store.

What do you think about all this? Are you intrigued as much as we are? Hit up the comments and let us know what you think.

Android smartphones to power NASA’s fleet of miniature satellites

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 01:10 PM PDT

We’ve seen Android serve as the basis for so many innovative ventures, but NASA’s latest project could top them all. A team from NASA’s Ames Research center in California has began construction on a group of miniature satellites composed entirely of Nexus smartphones. The project, properly titled “PhoneSat” is just a small part of the larger Small Spacecraft Technology Program (SSTP)  that aims to build nanosatellites by using  small consumer electronics.

NASA has confirmed that the team has already built two nanosatellite prototype models. PhoneSat 1.0 is the first of the two, and offers limited functionality. The goal for this model is to simply observe and determine if a mini-satellite with a consumer smartphone can survive a short period of time in space. However, one of the most important aspects in determining success is if the satellite can actually send back actual health and picture data from space. In addition to sporting a Nexus One, the body of the satellite will include an array of batteries, a watchdog circuit to monitor the system (and reboot the phone, if necessary) and an external radio beacon.

PhoneSat 2.0 serves as the “advanced model”, and will attempt to improve on the functionality of PhoneSat 1.0 by utilizing a Samsung Nexus S. In addition to the smartphone, the satellite's design will feature a two-way radio, a GPS receiver and solar arrays. The solar arrays will offer continuous power, while the two-way radio will act as the command center. Under the satellite is a group of magnetorquer coils, which are electromagnets that interact with Earth's magnetic field. Naturally, these coils are attached to a set of reaction wheels to operators can control the unit’s movement in space.

Currently, the PhoneSat has no clear launch date, but it’s expected for both models to launch upon the maiden flight of Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket later this year.

Jury In Apple Versus Samsung Case Requests Extra Deliberation Time

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 12:59 PM PDT

The entire tech world is waiting for the final decision from the jury in the Apple vs. Samsung trial, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer as the jury is still in deliberations and has made a request to extend discussions by an hour before the trial takes a break for the weekend. The general idea is this likely indicates the group is either not so close to reaching a consensus or the jury wants to ensure it has all of the important facts correct and will leave no room for any sort of doubt once making the decision (hopefully by today). Oh and don’t forget either— the jurors have a hefty-sized notebook to go through in order to help decide what damages can be given to either Samsung or Apple.

There is still the hope that a verdict will be reached by 4:30pm PST today. Fingers crossed we’ll hear some news soon.

  3. Download the .zip (XDA forum)

The actual OTA update is rumored to start rolling out later this month, but if you’re feeling brave head over to XDA and follow the instructions. But it’s always wise to take a backup before proceeding. Happy flashing!

T-Mobile Still Mum On Samsung Galaxy Note Availability, But Retailer Costco Has The Smartphone Listed On Closeout

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 11:45 AM PDT

We have some more news for you all regarding the whole T-Mobile Galaxy Note saga. After previously seeing the device would be cancelled until further notice, we now see Costco has the device on closeout. This is despite the device being available at “select T-Mobile retailers“, according to T-Mobile. The irony of this latest development is neither T-Mobile, nor the partner retailers have given any sort of explanation of this ever-growing story.

Of course this story is just begging us to ask: does T-Mobile plan on releasing the Galaxy Note 2 on its network instead of the original?
