Apple seeks ban on eight Samsung smartphones in the US

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 03:36 PM PDT

In the wake of Samsung’s guilty verdict, Apple has filed a notice with the court naming a slew of devices it plans to ban in the US. Considering most of the devices found to be in violation of Apple’s patents aren’t being sold anymore, the Cupertino-based company is only seeking a ban on eight smartphones.

  • Galaxy S 4G
  • Galaxy S2 (AT&T)
  • Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket)
  • Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile)
  • Galaxy S2 Epic 4G
  • Galaxy S Showcase
  • Droid Charge
  • Galaxy Prevail
To better depict its reasoning, Apple has also included a chart showing the patents that each device infringes upon. Unsurprisingly, the chart shows that all of the listed devices, excluding the Galaxy Prevail, infringe upon Apple’s design patents and trade dress. However, Samsung’s Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch and Galaxy S Showcase are the only phones that managed to not infringe on Apple’s utility patents.

Because infringement has already been confirmed, Apple just has to convince the court that it will suffer irreparable harm if these handsets remain on the market. A guilty verdict makes the task easier, but an injunction is certainly not guaranteed. Although, with Apple picking and choosing its fights, instead of going after all of the infringing products, the company seems to have confidence in its tactics.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 specs leak ahead of Unpacked Event

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 01:01 PM PDT

We’re only a few days away from Unpacked and the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (GT-N7100). We are expecting it to sport a 5.5-inch display and a quad-core processor.  A newspaper in Seoul confirmed that the Note 2 will indeed have a 5.5-inch (1280 x 720) Super AMOLED display and a 1.4GHz quad core Exynos 4412 processor. What about the camera? Some were hoping for a 12MP, but it looks like it will definitely sport an 8MP shooter.

The other very interesting news is that it will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. I guess this isn’t a shocker since the international Galaxy S III will get Jelly Bean shortly after the event. Other minor details are that you will have your choice of 16GB or 32GB of storage and the edges are more rounded than the original Note. We already heard that there will be two color options.

After Samsung unveiled the original Note last year, I never anticipated there would be this much anticipation for the second go around.

Say Hello to the Ultimate Backup Tool that Doesn’t Require Root

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 12:21 PM PDT

If you currently own a rooted Android device, or flashed a custom ROM, chances are you’ve taken at least one nandroid based or titanium based backup of your system settings and application data. As you know, in order to take either of these backups, root access is required.

What about if you want to unlock your bootloader after you’ve been using your device for several months? Since it’s unlikely that you would already have root access, you were forced to lose this precious data.

Well not anymore. Thanks to XDA Forum Member Gigadroid, a Windows based tool is now available for taking full backups without root access. This tool backs up apps, apps data and information stored on the SD card, just like Titanium Backup would do with root access. It should be noted that this isn’t exactly like a nandroid backup or a snapshot of your device, but it will effectively backup all the important stuff.

So far the tool has only been tested on a Galaxy Nexus, but it should work on devices running Android 4.0+. So if you’re device isn’t rooted, and you would like to back up your app data, this tool might be for you.

Samsung releases internal memo in the wake of the $1 billion U.S. patent verdict

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:27 AM PDT

I know, we’ve all had it up to here with the continuous reaction of the jury’s recent decision in favor of Apple over Samsung. Following Google’s first official statement regarding the $1 billion patent verdict, Samsung released an internal memo on its blog which highlights a not too surprising opinion of the decision by the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA). Samsung highlights the District Court made a decision which it respectfully disagrees with and contradicts other decisions made by courts in other countries such as the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea who all sided with Samsung regarding similar patent cases. This internal memo appears to be the first step in rallying Samsung’s employees as well as trying to ease their customers’ concerns following the $1 billion gut punch. You can read the full internal memo after the break.

“We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers. However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter-sue, so that we can protect our company.

Certainly, we are very disappointed by the verdict at the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA), and it is regrettable that the verdict has caused concern amongst our employees, as well as our loyal customers.

However, the judge's final ruling remains, along with a number of other procedures. We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.

The NDCA verdict starkly contrasts decisions made by courts in a number of other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea, which have previously ruled that we did not copy Apple's designs. These courts also recognized our arguments concerning our standards patents.

History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth, when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.

We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.”

LG announces LG Optimus Vu II for Korean markets

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 09:40 AM PDT

While much of the world, including the U.S. and European markets, wait for the release of the LG Optimus Vu next month, LG is already moving on to the LG Optimus Vu II for the Korean market. LG indicates the new smartphone device will be released next month. The highlight of the device is the inclusion of an infrared control unit. Matched with a Q Remote application loaded on the device, the Optimus Vu II will be capable of controlling a variety of home entertainment systems and appliances.

Additional specifications for the device were not released. The Optimus Vu has a 5-inch screen, can carry 32GB of storage and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. LG did not release any information about pricing or future markets. Including IR remote control capabilities is one way to help consumers not lose the remote. Is the ability to control other aspects of a home like HVAC or the refrigerator via IR going to help set this device apart from the rest of the pack?

Google Responds to Samsung-Apple Verdict with Official Statement

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:56 AM PDT

Samsung and Apple both released statements after Friday’s $1.05B verdict in the world’s most watched tech trial in history. But the 800lb elephant in the room that remained quiet was Google, until late last night.

So what does Mountain View have to say about all of this? The Verge was provided with an official response from Google last night. In a nutshell, they do not want the recent court decision to limit consumers from accessing innovative products, and that the patent claims do not reflect on the core Android OS experience.

Google’s official statement is as follows:

The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.

Google hints that some of Apple’s patents are the result of “ideas that have been around for decades”, so presumably they’re talking about patents such as “pinch to zoom” and “double tap to zoom”, among others. It seems ridiculous to think Apple can block such fundamental features on a mobile device; then again, it already has forced the removal of universal search from Android devices.

So what do you think of all this insanity? Hit up the comments and let us know!

Samsung Formally Shows Galaxy Player 5.8 To The Masses

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:39 AM PDT

Samsung continues to mark its stamp of Portable Media Player (PMP) dominance in the Android world, so it’s only fitting that it has introduced a new PMP called the Galaxy Player 5.8, a device we’d heard about recently. The Galaxy Player 5.8, takes several cues from the existing Galaxy S III smartphone and has the typical standard features. First thing’s first— in case you’re wondering, the 5.8 in Galaxy Player 5.8 title stands for the device having a monstrous 5.8-inch screen. While the 5.8-inch screen is nothing to sneeze at, the device does feature a 960×540 qHD display, leaving a lot to be desired especially as other devices do feature a Super AMOLED screen and all. The rest of the features of the device includes Ice Cream Sandwich, a VGA front-facing camera, 2,500mAh battery and 16GB or 32GB configurations.

So while the device is now out in the open, all that’s left to do is simply see when Samsung let’s the world know if its availability and cost. Expect to find out details of both questions to be answered sometime in the near-future.

Samsung Plans On Launching Two Colors For Galaxy Note 2, New Titan Grey For Galaxy S III

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:15 AM PDT

As Samsung prepares for perhaps a major announcement this week, we’ve just gotten word of some additional tidbits of news regarding the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S III smartphones. According to a leaked database photo obtained by the gang at SamMobile, Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Note 2 smartphone in 2 color variations: Ceramic White and the other TBD (for now). Meanwhile, it appears Samsung plans on launching yet another color for its successful Galaxy S III smartphone called Titan Grey. While it’s great that we have an idea of what colors each device will come in, the real question is when they will be available. SamMobile reports the new Titan Grey color will be available from Week 37 (Week of September 10th), while the other Galaxy Note 2 colors should be available by Week 40 (First week of October).
