How to easily bypass Android liveness check [Video]

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 12:52 PM PDT

As much as I love Android, I’ve always felt the face unlock feature that was introduced in Ice Cream Sandwich is more of a gimmick than anything. While it’s cool to show off to non-Android users, it isn’t practical and can be bypassed rather easily if one were to try. In my opinion, using the pattern or pin unlock system provides a faster and safer way to lock your phone from others.

In Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google developers attempted to make the face unlock feature more secure by adding a “liveness check” feature. The problem with face unlock was that one could easily use a picture of the person to unlock the phone. With liveness check enabled, the owner is required to blink for the phone to unlock. This adds another element into the security of face unlock which fixes the issue of simply using ones picture.

Of course, it never takes too long before people figure out a way to bypass that as well. The YouTube video below, uploaded by idaka82, shows a group of guys quickly showing you how to do just that. They simply took a picture and hastily photo-shopped his eyes so that it looks like he’s blinking. Then by transitioning the original and edited photo simultaneously, it gives the effect it’s blinking.

Needless to say, while it can be done rather quickly, it does take a bit of effort. Nonetheless, I’ll always suggest Android users to stick with the pattern or pin unlock system if you wish to secure your phone.

Official Samsung Invite for Event on August 15th points to Galaxy Note 10.1

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 12:28 PM PDT

We were already saving the date of August 15th, but we just received the official invite from Samsung. It appears a tablet is the focal point for the event and will most likely be the Galaxy Note 10.1. It was unveiled in February, but has been tweaked with a quad-core CPU and a new S Pen holder. You can already order the 4G HSPA+ version from Negri Electronics for $750, but this event will most likely be the introduction of the WiFi-only version for the U.S.

Samsung won’t be able use footage from ’2001: A Space Odyssey’ as evidence in trial against Apple

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:17 AM PDT

I’m no lawyer, but what’s the deal with Judge Lucy Koh? First she rules that Samsung is unable to use evidence that clearly shows they were working on designs that resembled the iPhone back in 2006, and now she ruled that Samsung can’t use footage from the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

As you know “2001: A Space Odyssey” features a tablet well before the iPad was even thought of let alone designed. I assume the reason why Koh keeps refusing these exhibits is because this case isn’t about refuting Apple’s patents. It’s on whether Samsung infringed on them or not. The fact that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office should have or shouldn’t have granted these patents is not on the table.

Google Cracking Down On Malware In Play Store, Throws The Gauntlet Down At Indie Developers In The Process

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:40 AM PDT

While malware seems to be a rampant problem in the world of Android, Google has taken extraordinary measures to ensure smartphone and tablet users are not affected by corrupt apps. So with that, Google has heard the cries and angst from affected Play Store users and is now fighting back— except it’s now fighting back against small, independent developers in addition to the untrusted ones. Google recently introduced stricter terms and conditions into its Developer Distribution Agreement, which allows it to maintain better order in its Play Store. As a catch however—  Google’s automated crackdown also affects small developers such as Cory Trese by sending individuals like Trease automated emails, informing him that he is violating the spam provisions of the new developer terms and conditions.

A belief of Google’s attacks on devs like Trease may have to do with a simple fact: his app gets updated frequently— almost too frequently. The only catch is that it’s just pure speculation— there’s no concrete reason for Google’s newfound threat nor is Google responding to Trease and his brother. Nevertheless, Android users of all certainly have something to look forward to with the much-needed control and order of the Play Store in order to make the overall user experience better for all. But at the same time, Google will need to be careful with what type of precedent it intends to set if it does go after talented and innocent indie developers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 in stock and shipping from Negri Electronics

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 09:23 AM PDT

If you have been anxiously awaiting your chance to get your hands on the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Negri Electronics has just what you need. Earlier today, Negri took to Twitter and effectively announced they had shipped pre-orders via a question for followers about receipt of tracking numbers. This followed a tweet yesterday in which Negri posted a picture of one of the units they had in hand.

The news gets even better. A visit to the Negri Electronics web site reveals availability as "In Stock" for $749.50. I'm not sure how fast they are turning orders around, but if they get right on it and you select express shipping, you could possibly have the device in your hands tomorrow.

Microsoft inks their 15th Android licensing deal, Motorola still stubborn

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 08:55 AM PDT

You have to hand it to Microsoft. As Apple fights it out with Android manufacturers, Microsoft is quietly signing licencing deals. This all started last year when they were able to grab deals with HTC, Samsung, Acer, and ViewSonic. In fact, back in October they had a total of 10 deals.

As of today that total is at 15 with the latest one involving Honeywell International, Inc. It’s based on their digital assistant called the Dolphin, which is meant for field workers with data capture being its primary use.

All 15 of these deals generate quite a bit of money for Microsoft, and since they can’t sell any phones, this really helps their bottomline.

With 15 deals, you would think there really isn’t a company left to go after, but there is one major player yet to sign anything, and that’s Motorola. Microsoft recently scored some victories here in the U.S. and Germany, but Motorola continues to fight long and hard. It really makes me wonder why Motorola’s patents were worth so much when they’re forced to defend themselves constantly. Microsoft would rather Motorola sign a deal just like everyone else in order to save on legal fees, but kudos to Motorola for not giving in.
