Acer C720 Chromebook (6)

The Acer C710 was introduced just last year, giving Google fans and budget PC buyers the opportunity to pick up a reasonably decent laptop for just $199.99. When it was time to introduce a new model however, Acer's C720 would ditch the ultra-low price tag in favor of a slightly higher $249.99 — though it was still the cheapest Chromebook on the market.

In time for the holiday shopping season, it looks like Acer is bringing back the $199.99 pricing point with the Acer C720-2848. This new slightly modified version of the C720 is essentially the same as its more expensive brother with an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display, an Intel Haswell Celeron processor and 16GB flash storage.

Other specs include dual speakers, 1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0, an HDMI port, an integrated web cam and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. The device is also expected to get the same 8 1/2 hours of battery life found on the original C720. That means the only noticeable change is that the RAM has dropped from 4GB down to 2GB.

Is it even worth saving $50 when you end up losing half the RAM? Honestly it depends.

Chromebooks aren’t that demanding and for many users it probably will perform good enough if you really have only $200 to spend. That said, if money isn’t super tight, coughing up the extra money for more RAM isn’t a bad idea.

The Acer C720-2848 is available starting today from Best Buy and Amazon, and is expected to hit the Acer Store in December. Besides the C720 hardware and Chrome OS, Acer is also throwing in 12 free Gogo Inflight passes and a trial of Google Play Music All Access.

Anyone interested in picking this one up at $199.99 or not?
