Nexus 7 3G headed to Play Store this October

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 10:42 AM PDT

ASUS and Google’s Nexus 7 tablet has caused quite a stir in the tablet market and now Google may be readying a 3G/4G version of the popular slate. A few quiet rumors have been floating around regarding at least a 3G HSPA+ version that they could easily sell on their Play Store according to MoDaCo.

Since Google debuted the 8 and 16GB WiFi model many have been wishing for two things. One being 3G or 4G connectivity, and the second being a micro-SD card. Obviously we won’t be seeing the second one, but a 4G LTE Nexus 7 would be awesome if you ask us. What do you guys think?

The newly detailed model could be launching in as soon as six weeks — so that puts a connected Nexus 7 tablet hitting the streets around October and just in time for holiday sales. According to the various tips and whispers the hardware will be exactly the same (which is awesome) except the addition of the new radios.

According to the source, ASUS has already ramped up their production of both WiFi and the new 3G/4G LTE model to prepare for the onslaught of additional sales. We still don’t know how many of the original WiFi model have been sold, but a 3G model would only increase sales. The impressive and powerful tablet debuted at $199, but we have no details on a possible pricing structure for the 3G variation. Whether Google will work with carriers, or just offer a 3G HSPA+ model in their Play Store isn’t yet known. They’ve been pushing hardware sales to their web market so that is where we expect the new tablet to go on sale. We’ll update when we hear more.

HTC’s new 5-inch Galaxy Note rival spotted in the wild

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 10:09 AM PDT

What a great way to round off the Labor Day weekend right? With a unique and mysterious HTC device that we know absolutely nothing about. These leaked images unearthed by The Verge appear to give us our first glance at HTC’s upcoming 5-inch 1080p smartphone “phablet” to rival the Galaxy Note and the newly announced Galaxy Note II.

We have a few blurry cam photos as you see above and below, and that is sadly it. However there’s been multiple leaks and benchmarks in the recent past hinting at and seemingly confirming HTC does indeed have a 5-inch smartphone with an odd 1794 × 1080p full HD display. The images leaked today are hopefully just that according to Chinese forum Phone HK.

Checking out the image of the rear we can clearly see this is a rather large smartphone. At least 4.7 or 5-inches in size, and we are inclined to think the latter after looking at an HTC One X. The previous reports have slated this device as headed for Verizon, which would also make sense given the fact they passed on the original HTC One series from earlier this year. The beautiful red color accents fit in perfect with Verizon and older HTC DROID devices, but the EVO line also has enjoyed a similar color infatuation.

What we can gather from the images is the device is quite large and will have either an 8 megapixel or higher camera on the rear with that massive lens. The Beats Audio branding is clearly present still, and on the front we still have capacitive buttons and no on-screen navigation keys — so that might explain the odd resolution.

Any guesses folks?

Samsung Galaxy Note II gets a wide range of accessories at IFA

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 04:31 PM PDT

Samsung got a lot of attention when it pulled the veil off the Galaxy Note II at IFA 2012, but now it’s time to talk accessories. Just like the Galaxy S III, the Galaxy Note II is getting a whole line of accessories to make your device standout from the crowd, keep it protected, and make it easier to use. Our pals at SlashGear were able to snap a few pictures of the Galaxy Note II accessories display at IFA, and it’s pretty safe to say that there will be no lack of options.

That’s especially true for flip covers. The flip covers made for the Galaxy Note II’s larger screen come in a variety of different colors, ranging from vibrant blues, pinks, and yellows, to darker tones like black, mustard yellow, and red. Naturally, there’s a white one available too if you want to stick with the color scheme of the Galaxy Note II. These flip covers replace the battery cover on the backside of the phone, and come attached to another cover you can flip over the side to protect the front screen.

Also seen in the images are a collection of pouches you can store the Galaxy Note II in where you aren’t using it, along with a number of protective cases. These cases protect the sides of the device with a bumper, meaning that accidentally dropping your Galaxy Note II doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end of the road for your expensive handset. A collection of vehicle docks can be seen in the images, as can a group of S Pens of varying size – perfect for those who need a replacement or find the S Pen the Galaxy Note II comes packed with to be too uncomfortable to use.

We also catch a glimpse of some protective covers and book covers for the Galaxy Note II, and finally, a number of keyboard docks are on display as well. There isn’t any release date or pricing information for this line up of accessories yet, but we can probably expect them to launch around the same time as the device itself. We’ll have that information for you once Samsung spills the details, so keep it tuned here to Android Community!

Android Community Weekly: September 2nd, 2012

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 03:45 PM PDT

We had a busy week here at Android Community with tons of exciting news. Not only were there leaks galore but we also were able to enjoy tons of official announcements while at IFA 2012 in Berlin, Germany, like the Galaxy Note II. With the long 3 day weekend here we hope you all enjoy the good weather and catch up on your Android news with all the details provided below.

It’s Labor Day weekend and we have all the news that mattered to us this week in the world of Android. Were going to have to start the news list off with drumroll… Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy Note II was finally unveiled and officially announced, then Samsung dropped the news of their 4.8-inch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean powered Galaxy Camera — and they are both awesome. The Galaxy Note II was even prettier than we thought and you’ll surely want to stop in and take a peek at our Galaxy Note II hands-on.

As usual that isn’t the last of the Samsung news either. They announced Jelly Bean was “coming soon” for their Galaxy S III, Note, and Note 10.1 although gave no actual date. Samsung detailed 4 new colors for the Galaxy S III and we love the new Titanium Grey option. Then lastly rumors suggested Samsung will sue Apple the moment they announce the iPhone 5 if it has 4G LTE — since they own about 12% of all LTE patents and are still upset for losing in court.

Then we have even more news from IFA 2012 from Sony and Lenovo. For starters Sony announced a new 84″ 4K TV but sadly it doesn’t run Android, yet. Sony did however announce three new Xperia smartphones for the end of 2012, as well as their new and improved Sony Xperia Tablet S. This time they dropped the cheap plastic for a lightweight aluminum. Well done Sony! Lenovo announced three new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, and one even has a Transformer-like keyboard. Archos announced their new 7-inch GamePad tablet with built-in keys and controls that should make for an interesting gaming experience. Then lastly HTC announced their budget friendly Desire X, and that the ThunderBolt won’t be getting Ice Cream Sandwich quite yet.

There was plenty more from IFA 2012 and the entire week. Video leaked of Motorola’s new DROID RAZR M budget phone and Amazon is getting set to show two new 7-inch Kindle Fire tablets. As a side note Motorola will be unveiling their new devices September 5th in New York, and Amazon will be announcing their Kindle Fires on the 6th in California. We’ll be at both events live to capture the details and get hands-on time so stay tuned. Catch up on anything you might have missed from the links below and enjoy that 3 day Labor Day weekend!

Samsung Galaxy S III quad-core 4G LTE hands-on

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 01:51 PM PDT

While roaming the halls at IFA this weekend we managed to stumble on a special Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. What you’ll see below is an exclusive plum colored quad-core Galaxy S III with 4G LTE from the folks at Vodafone. What’s even better is this device also is running the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from Samsung.

Samsung has stated Jelly Bean was coming soon, but this device is already running the anticipated update. What we have essentially is the same international Galaxy S III with Samsung’s own Exynos quad-core processor at 1.4 GHz, but it also has 4G LTE — one of the only LTE quad-core devices on the street.

This model rocks the quad-core unlike the US models that all replaced the Samsung Exynos processor for Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 instead. As you can see from the image above the 4G LTE present here in Germany thanks to Vodafone was mind boggling fast. 84 Mbps download speeds trump my house network. Then just for fun we also ran the popular Quadrant benchmark to see how Android 4.1 Jelly Bean handled things.

While not outrageously fast it was blazing along as usual. Jelly Bean might not improve benchmark scores too much but thanks to project butter the device was as smooth as could be and Samsung’s TouchWiz UX didn’t have many changes over their ICS flavor. Stay tuned as the official Jelly Bean update should be coming hopefully next week, and Samsung’s new color options should also be hitting the shelves starting this month too.
