LG Splendor with US Cellular branding leaked

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 12:23 PM PDT

LG’s addition to Optimus smartphones line which is known as the “L-Style“, is around us from a long time now. Now it seems US Cellular is planning to grab a phone from the “L-Style”, as an image of LG Splendor US730 is leaked by smartphenom.com, and the device is actually US variant of the LG Optimus L7.

About the specs, it’s featuring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1 GHz processor, 4.3-inch 480×800 touchscreen, a 5 MP rear camera with 720p HD video capture, also with a VGA front-facing camera, 2 GB of built-in storage, and a microSD slot.

No words on the price at the moment and when US Cellular is planning to launch it, but we can expect it to happen any time soon because the information came for LG USA website and it was taken down after few moments, but folks over at Smartphenom were quick enough. Hence we can expect that it will be out sooner or later.

Are you are a looking forward to new devices from US Cellular? Tell us what do you think about this device in the comment box below.

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 12:05 PM PDT

US major carrier Sprint is planning to come out with yet another device that will be light on your wallet, just like Kyocera Rise. I am talking about Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE smartphone, a phone running on Android and featuring specifications that will hardly blow your mind.

It’s running on Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich along with TouchWIZ UI, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.0 inch WVGA display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM, NFC, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, and a 2,100 mAh battery. No words on the price at the moment, but most probably it will cost somewhere around $100. Hopefully, Sprint will launch it by the end of this month.

Are you planning to grab one of these, tell us about it in the comment box below.

3G version of Google Nexus 7 coming soon?

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Google Nexus 7 was officially announced back in June, and everyone know it as one of the best “Google” branded products to date. The main purpose behind the launch of it was to provide users a rich experience but with an affordable price tag, and it was also a big challenge to Kindle Fire. Now we all know that Amazon will be launching a new Kindle on September 6, and everyone is eager to see what they are up to.

Though Google and ASUS are ready to welcome the next Kindle Fire with a 3G version of Google Nexus 7. According to MoDaCo's  Paul O’Brien, the 3G-version of the famous tablet will be launched roughly in six weeks, so probably, we will see it somewhere in October.

Everything else will be same under the hood, though there will be a new price tag. AndroidGuys reviewed the Google Nexus 7, and we were nothing but impressed by this amazing masterpiece.

Would you prefer buying a 3G version of Nexus 7? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Scan and create PDF documents on the fly with Genius Scan

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 09:46 AM PDT

Remember back in the 90′s when scanners were available in two major design styles?  There were flatbed scanners that came in standalone and multi-function devices and then there were those types that let you feed a sheet of single paper through.  While each had its benefit, uses couldn’t really commit to buying both, lest they spend a couple hundred bucks… twice.

Fast forward to today and we learn that there are other options at our disposal.  Thanks the power of the smartphone, users can now create documents (JPG, PDF) from a scanned image or photo directly from our Android handsets.  One such product that makes this incredibly simple is Genius Scan. After having already amassed more than 8 million downloads for iPhone, Genius Scan recently became available for Android.

What does it do?

In a nutshell, you take a picture of a magazine page, piece of paper, other document and the app creates PDF files to save or share.  The Genius Scan scanner technology includes smart page detection, perspective correction and image post-processing. And instead of a bunch of individual files to keep after, it lets you create multi-pages PDF documents with several scans.

Perspective detection and auto-correction

Features of Genius Scan include:

  • Page detection When the user takes a photo, Genius Scan detects the frame of the document.
  • Perspective correction If the photo isn't lined up perfectly, Genius Scan corrects the distortion and straightens the image up.
  • Image post-processing Genius Scan improves the quality of the resulting scan by enhancing the colors for a photo document or dramatically increasing the contrast for black and white documents.
  • PDF documents Genius Scan lets users create PDF documents with multiple scans.
  • Export features Users can then export the documents at their convenience. Options include email or any cloud services such as Box, Dropbox, Evernote etc.

Genius Scan for Android can be downloaded for a one-time 99¢ fee.  We’ve noticed that the developers have already issued multiple updates so it stands to reason that this title will continually improve over time!

GoalZero Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit review

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Continuing with our series of solar-powered chargers and accessories for smartphones, we bring you a review of the GoalZero Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit. This device, like the others we tested, was used over the course of a few days while camping in mostly sunny conditions.

What’s in the box?

  • 1 x Guide 10 Battery Pack
  • 1 x Nomad 7 Solar Panel
  • 1 x Ultra Charge Solar Cord
  • 1 x 12V cigarette adapter
  • 1 x AA rechargeable batteries (4 pack)

Weighing less than a pound (.8lb) and having the footprint of a typical middle school yearbook, the Nomad 7 part of the kit is very convenient to carry around. When not in use, the device folds up quite nicely and tucks away into any bag.  Opened up, the solar charger can be hung from a backpack, canopy, or tent.

We found that the device would fully charge over the span of around 3-4 hours, but required pretty much perfect sunny conditions.  On a few days that were cloudy and overcast, the Nomad 7 obviously took longer.  Unlike other models we’ve reviewed, we missed the option of being able to plug into a wall for quicker charge or overnight boosts.

One of the key features we really enjoyed about the Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit. was the car/cigarette adapter.  This alone added a level of functionality and flexibility that other solar chargers we tested did not offer.  We really appreciated that other users in our camp were able to plug in their phone (iPhone, feature phone) charger or device (MP3 player, Nintendo DS) just the same as if they were in a car.

Charging times varied a bit from device to device however most smartphones were completed in well under four hours.  Since nobody likes to get dangerously low on juice, we found that our average times were 2-2.5 hours.

Not bad considering you can do this while setting a campfire, eating dinner, and enjoy a few s’mores.  Other things we charged were usually finished in about 1-2 hours and, again, depended on the item and existing battery level.

The Guide 10 comes with a set of four rechargeable AA batteries (and a charger) which can be plugged directly into Nomad 7 Solar Panel.  This would prove handy for flashlights, radios, and other devices which use the AA battery size.  What’s more, leaving them in the charger itself would double as a portable power bank for charging phones and other items via USB plug.  And as if that weren’t enough, the charger has an LED light on its end so it acted as a flashlight.  Tons of flexibility here, and we loved it.

What we liked

  • The car charger adapter added both peace of mind and functionality
  • The AA charger and batteries doubled as a power bank with flashlight capabilities
  • Lightweight, fold-up kit stores in any bag

What we didn’t love

  • The $159 retail price is a little higher than most consumers are ready to justify
  • Would like to see a port to plug into a wall for quicker charging on less than sunny days.

Where to buy the Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit

You can pick one of these up directly from the manufacturer for about $160 if you’re so inclined.  Our advice to you, however, is to hop over to Amazon and grab it for about half that cost.  The last we checked, Amazon.com was selling the Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit for $85.00, or 47% off the normal price.  IF you can get the entire kit for $100 or less than you’re doing quite well.
