Amazon enables developers to target devices in Kindle Fire family

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 10:10 AM PDT

Amazon just outlined a new Device Targeting feature which lets developers customize the Android application package (APK) to specific Amazon devices. Specifically aimed at providing a unique experience for the various members of the Kindle Fire family, it allows developers to optimize apps for screen size, resolution, API version, and more. With multiple models in the Kindle Fire lineup, developers can tailor-build something that looks better on larger, higher resolution screens.

As to why Amazon is opting to go this route, well there are multiple reasons, including better search relevancy and reduced consumer confusion.

Intel talks next-generation dual-core Medfield chips

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 09:22 AM PDT

Intel expects to release dual-core versions of its Medfield processors before long, bringing hyper threading to its next-generation of system-on-a-chip.  What’s more, Intel also plans to introduce chipsets that offer 4G LTE support, something critically missing in today’s mobile devices. Speaking to TechCrunch, marketing head Summet Syal advises that the 4G LTE-ready version of its x86 SOC will be arriving in late 2012, paving the way for bigger, better things in the new year.

"Our next gen product will be a dual-core but again that product will also have hyper threading so essentially… you will also have dual-core with four threads. So again just like we demoed that a single core hyper-threaded can outperform dual-core/quad-core I think we'll do it again when we introduce the dual-core product with four threads."

The sooner Intel can get their processor to support 4G LTE, the better their chances of having any success in the United States.  While we might like a lower-cost alternative to today’s top devices, consumers are learning quickly that a faster data connection can be quite fun and important.

Droid Incredible X rumored to be design basis for Nexus 5

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 08:16 AM PDT

With the anniversary of the Galaxy Nexus  fast approaching, anxious eyes are starting to look for clues and details for it successor.  And since we’re talking about maybe five Nexus partners, it stands to reason that something would trickle out soon.  Such is the case with the recent rumor of the Optimus Nexus, a potential LG take on the Pure Google experience.  Such could also be the case with a rumored Nexus 5 that may be based on the recently leaked 5-inch Droid Incredible X.

According to a source close to GSM Arena, HTC is readying for its return to the Nexus lineup with a device that runs Android 4.1.2 and features 1080p display and a Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset. Reportedly, the tweaked version of Android includes bug fixes, extra lock screen options, and Project Butter improvements.

As far as the device goes, it sounds like the presumed Nexus 5 is based on the 5-inch HTC phabletgetting a  lot of attention as of late. Additional specs are said to include a 12-megapixel camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a 2500mAh battery, LTE support, and 64GB internal storage.

A word of caution, however, as the details come from what amounts to a friend of a friend of a site. As much as we’d love to see this come to fruition, it’s possible that some information got lost in translation or made up along the way.

Thinking about the potential name for a moment, Nexus 5 makes sense on a number fronts.  It would be the 5th Nexus device since the line debuted (Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7) and would also follow suit with naming it for the screen size.

Dyzplastic intros Series 3′s Pandroid, Sir Knightly Bild, and Whoogle the Owl

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:44 AM PDT

Dyzplastic has released what appears to be the final previews for the upcoming Series 3 Android collectible figures, pulling the curtain back on another three designs.  Say hello to Pandroid, Sir Knightly Bild, and Whoogle the Owl!

Surely we are not the first to say we’re excited about the new creations and look forward to getting our hands on a box of these guys.  Seriously, just look at those things, they would make a great addition to any office or bedroom.

  • God of the wild, god of goats, nature protector.. kick-ass flautist? From the sparkly purple brainmeats of artist Kelly Denato comes Pandroid! Ready to rock out with his tiny pan flute accessory, this Android has a 1/16 ratio.
  • This valiant warrior has seen many a fierce fight. Every night he ventures into the unknown, unaware of what fresh hell awaits. He battles unimaginable beasts deep within Feature Creep Keep… (I think I just had an idea for another Android design.) Sir Knightly Bild was designed by me, and has a 1/16 ratio.
  • Last but not least today is Gary Ham’s nocturnal predator, Whoogle the Owl. This striking design comes in a 2/16 ratio, so you’ll have a full parliament in no time (yes, a group of owls is called a parliament… whooo knew! sorry).

Have you seen the other models from Series 3?

LG Optimus Vu II details seemingly confirmed

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:28 AM PDT

The details for the presumed Optimus Vu II have leaked online, seemingly confirming a slightly improved take on the would-be Galaxy Note II killer. According to Korean blog Bad IT Tong (translate), the LG phone/tablet  will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and feature a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage, and an 8-megapixel rear camera.  Additional details include a 1080 x 768 IPS screen, LTE support, and a 2080mAh battery.  Similar stuff, yes, but boosts where it counts.

It’s hard to imagine LG wanting to sit on this until the anniversary of the first model, especially considering it’s another 4-5 months away.  Our gut tells us we’ll get an international version announced before the year is out with the potential for a U.S. model a few months later.
