LG Optimus Vu II Specs Leaked Ahead of Release

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 02:34 PM PDT

Another day, another spec leak. Today we’ll be discussing the LG Optimus Vu II leak. You have to wonder about these “leaks” sometimes. After all, it was announced in August that we should see this beast in the wild in September, so the specs are inevitable at this point. Plus there’s that Samsung Galaxy Note II, right around the corner. LG may have gotten a little antsy and “leaked” the specs, not to be outdone.

The leak itself reveals a dual-core Snapdragon S4 (Qualcomm MSM8960) processor with 2GB of RAM. Other niceties include an 8MP camera, NFC, LTE, and a slightly larger 2150mAh battery than its predecessor. The screen size will stay the same, as will the resolution with a 1024×768, 5-inch display. The device will also ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. On paper, it seems like the Vu II won’t be on par with the Note II, however it hopes to narrow the gap by offering a universal remote feature. We’ll have to see how they both perform in the real world however. Do you plan on purchasing one of these “phablets” soon? Let us know either way as I find the many opinions on this niche type of device fascinating.

Netflix for Android getting update, new interface similar to iPhone version

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 09:27 AM PDT

Last week, capitalizing on Apple's release of the new iPhone 5, Netflix released an update to the iOS version of their app. Today they started rolling out an update to the Netflix for Android version, mirroring the changes and improvements they made for iOS. The big changes come in the user interface. Along the top of the screen, Netflix now includes an area for items a user is currently watching so they can just tap on the show to resume. When looking at available titles, two options are available for users. One can single tap on a title to open up a page with information about the show like a synopsis, characters, and episodes if applicable. To actually play a title, you just double-tap on a title. Netflix has also made the search function universal throughout the app.

The updated app is still in the process of rolling out to the Google Play store. When available, it will require Android 2.3. After the break, check out a video from Netflix demonstrating the new user interface or use one of the download links to access the app in Google Play.

HTC’s DROID Incredible X could become the Nexus 5

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 08:23 AM PDT

Last week we saw a leaked Verizon roadmap that listed the DROID Incredible X, which will sport a 5-inch 1080p display as well as the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus. The latest news out of GSMArena is that an anonymous tipster claims that the same device will also be a Google Nexus device, called the Nexus 5. It’s obviously not the 5th version of a Nexus phone, so it’s a play on the display size, just like the Nexus 7.

Other than the display and CPU I already mentioned, it will also sport 2GB of RAM, a 12MP camera, 64GB of storage, and a 2500mAh battery. These are essentially the same specs as the DROID Incredible X, but the the Nexus 5 will have one glaring difference; stock Android. Speaking of that, the rumor is that there won’t be a major version of Android announced, but we could see Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which would include some bug fixes and other enhancements. I’m thinking the multi account feature that we recently saw might be one of those “enhancements.”

I still don’t think this will be the only Nexus device. We already saw more evidence of the Galaxy Nexus 2 (or Galaxy Nexis Premier) earlier today and there’s rumors of LG releasing a Nexus device based on the Optimus G. The big question is what the hell is Motorola doing? I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out with a Nexus device based on the DROID RAZR M. This way Google will have a variety of Nexus devices at all price points. Time will tell. Get ready because this freight train is just getting started.

Intel readying next-gen, dual-core Medfield, LTE devices

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:30 AM PDT

If there’s one knock on Medfield-based Intel smartphone chips when comparing them to the ARM-based chips, it’s that they do not support 4G LTE connectivity. Intel is looking to change that “later this year and ramping into 2013.” While Intel’s current Medfield devices feature Hyperthreading making them “appear” to have multi-cores, they’re looking to move into the true multi-core device segment to gain a foothold with U.S. carriers. While they aren’t quite ready to jump to the quad-core offerings, their dual-core phones will still feature Hyperthreading, thus acting like a quad-core device. How will this play out in the U.S. market with so many folks stuck on specs these days? And by the time we see these new Intel devices, are potential buyers going to want true quad-core devices, no matter the marketing speak? We’ll keep you posted with any updates on this front.

Pantech Announces The Vega R3 Smartphone, The “World’s Best Existing Quad-Core Smartphone”

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:17 AM PDT

As we see existing quad-core devices featuring Exynos or Tegra 3 chips, it’s only natural that we start to see offerings featuring the new chips from Qualcomm. Well the newest superphone in all the land is now here: the Pantech Vega R3— a Snapdragon S4 Pro-powered beast. The device features an dual-core APQ8064 1.5GHz chip, 2GB of RAM, a whopping 13MP camera, Bluetooth 4.0 and 2,600mAh battery. While those features are nothing to sneeze at, the device also features a unique 5.3-inch display dubbed “Natural IPS Pro LCD”, which aims to make that 1280 x 720 resolution really pop compared to the competition. Oh and the device will come with Android 4.0 loaded up— with a Jelly Bean upgrade due not too long after the device’s initial release.

The device has just been announced, but there’s no word of availability just yet— though there’s the expectation the device will be sold starting tomorrow in Korea. Fingers crossed other markets— specifically those of us here Stateside will have the opportunity to see the device someday.

Samsung Provides Updated Jelly Bean Update Roadmap To The Masses

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 06:42 AM PDT

In addition to the utter joy of the Jelly Bean update getting out to select Galaxy S III owners, Samsung has announced its latest roadmap highlighting which additional devices are slated for that buttery goodness. As of right now, Samsung has confirmed 15 of its popular devices will indeed receive the Android 4.1 update either “soon” or at some point in the future:

GALAXY Tab 2 7.0 & 10.1, GALAXY Note 10.1, GALAXY SII, GALAXY Note, GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus, GALAXY S Advance, GALAXY SII LTE, GALAXY Music, GALAXY Chat, GALAXY Ace 2, GALAXY Beam, GALAXY Ace Plus, GALAXY mini II and GALAXY S DUOS

Most of the devices we see listed shouldn’t be after too much of a surprise. After all, Samsung did say that some devices would skip Ice Cream Sandwich and go straight to Jelly Bean, while other successful devices would without a doubt get the Jelly Bean update. Hopefully owners of some Sammy devices won’t be too scorned since Jelly Bean will not be pushed to those respective devices. But then again, all is not too bad in reality because after all– it could be a lot worse as other manufacturers can attest to.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update for Galaxy S III Rolling Out, Poland Up First

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 06:40 AM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S III owners rejoice.  It looks like Samsung is making good on that promise of an October timeline of rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S III, and even a little earlier for some. Samsung has officially rolled out the update for the international Galaxy S III (GT-i9300) in Poland, available through Samsung Kies initially. As a reminder for those that may be a little foggy on what Android 4.1 brings, there’s the addition of Google Now, Project Butter, and a revamped notification system which is very nice. The update will also bring new TouchWiz functions amongst other features to the Galaxy S III. As we’ve seen in the past with these rollouts, other countries should be following suit in the next few days. Owners of the Galaxy S III in the U.S. may have to wait a bit longer since there’s typically more certification to go through.  However, this is obviously a good sign for for all Galaxy S III owners. We’re looking forward to hearing feedback on how 4.1 is performing on Samsung’s flagship device.
