LG Optimus Vu 2 announced for Korea

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Less than one year after introducing the Optimus Vu, LG has announced its successor, the Optimus Vu 2.  Featuring the same 5-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, the handset runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and packs a dual-core 1.5GHz MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon processor. Additional hardware details include 2GB RAM, a 2150mAh battery, an updated Rubberdium Pen 2.0, Wi-Fi, Blietooth 4.0, IR transmittor, and VoLTE (voice calls over 4G LTE) capability.

In terms of software, LG promises to update the handset to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, yet doesn’t seem ready to commit to a time frame.  LG has also included apps such as Q Translator and Q Memo for the Optimus Vu 2, both of which employ use of the stylus. Rounding things out, the smartphone comes with a feature called One Key (accessory purchase required), which helps you to locate the handset should it come up misplaced.

As of right now there’s no indication when Korea will see the Optimus Vu 2, nor what the price will be.  What’s more, we’re not sure how long until we get one in the United States; Verizon only recently started offering the initial model as the LG Intuition.

At a savings of $150 off the normal price, it’s absolutely worth every penny. HTC One X+ confirmed in O2 (UK) marketing materials

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:23 PM PDT

In yet another sign of things to be announced, the HTC One X+has been spotted in an upcoming O2 brochure. The details are pretty much what we’ve seen as of late, with one notable exception. Rather than offering 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, the One X+ looks poised to come with 64GB capacity. Well, at least this particular model does. It’s unclear whether there is a variant or two with the lesser storage.

Also of note is that the HTC One X+ will still come with 25GB Dropbox cloud-hosted storage, adding even more peace of mind for media hogs. Rounding things out we see that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean handset does indeed offer a quad-core 1.7GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera, and Beats Audio. According to the O2 brochure, the HTC One X+ will retail at £479.99 with pay as you go plans when it ultimately arrives.

Anyone putting some money aside in anticipation of this coming to T-Mobile, AT&T, or somewhere else?

Galaxy Music rumors confirmed ahead of October 11 event

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 10:47 AM PDT

New details have emerged for the yet-announced Samsung Galaxy Music ahead of its assumed October 11 debut. The new intel comes from Austrian site Telecom-Presse (translate) who confirms the entry-level specifications will include an 850MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 3-megapixel camera.  Powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the phone will come in a single-SIM and dual-SIM version and pack a massive 3-inch QVGA (240×320) display.

Thanks to the new leaked images, we can also see that the device does come with a pair of stereo speakers.  Let’s hope there’s enough music prowess here to offset the low-end performance as we don’t see much market opportunity for a Galaxy Music.  Of course, we’d love to be wrong!

Samsung holding another event on October 24

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 10:02 AM PDT

Samsung just dropped us an email asking us to “save the date” on October 24, where they will presumably announce either a new device or additional details for something already in the works.  Perhaps we’ll get official pricing and carrier availability goodies for the Galaxy Note II.  Pretty much everything we’ve seen so far points to the end of October so the 24th lines up quite nicely.  Any guesses?

Samsung rumored to intro GT-I8190 ‘Golden’ in November

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 09:37 AM PDT

Lest you thought Samsung was going to finish the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, you’d only be partially correct.  Word on the street is that they are cooking up yet another Android device for November, a little something nicknamed ‘Golden”.

Details are very scarce at this point, however a SamMobile source advises the GT-I8190 phone will have a 5-megapixel camera and come in two color options: Metallic Blue and Ceramic White.  We know it’s not hard to pin these specs on just about any Samsung phone but it’s all we’ve got thus far. Expect Android 4.0 or 4.1 for the operating system and Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

Considering the ‘Golden’ codename and preliminary specs, we’d like to posit that this might be the affordable model that’s set to do battle with the iPhone 5.  Yes, we know the Galaxy S III bests the Apple handset on a number of hardware fronts.  A lower-priced device that falls more closely in line with the iPhone 5 could really help push Samsung’s overall numbers into another galaxy.

As a reminder, a Galaxy S III Mini is expected later this year and was tied to rumors of a 5-megapixel camera, dual-core processor, and a 4.0-inch SuperAMOLED display.  This was the model that is allegedly designed to compete with the iPhone 5 with a price of around 250 euros.

Google may intro a $100 Nexus tablet by end of year

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 05:51 AM PDT

Google may introduce a $100 Android Nexus tablet by the end of 2012, according to new reports. The move, if true, could really help push Google’s tablet effort out in front of others like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and new Nook HD.

The source of the rumors is DigiTimes.com, a destination that has a somewhat spotty reputation at times. They advise that Google is again working with Asus on the new ultra-affordable design.

If the rumors are correct Apple will soon be introducing a smaller version of their iPad. Presumably this will cost a couple hundred dollars or more. Should the low cost Nexus tablet prove to be a reality,  Google could certainly steal away market share from all players involved.

Qualcomm Announces New Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8x25Q Processors with Quad-Core CPUs and Reference Design Counterpart for High-Volume Smartphones

Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8x30 Platform to Support LTE -TDD/TD-SCDMA and All Three China Operators -

BEIJING, Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced the addition of two new Snapdragon™ S4 mobile processors: the MSM8225Q and MSM8625Q. Both are members of the Snapdragon S4 Play processor tier, optimized specifically for a broad range of smartphone users seeking faster applications and better user experiences. Snapdragon S4 Play processors will now offer OEMs both dual-core and quad-core CPUs and performance for entry-level smartphones, with the more advanced version featuring higher bus bandwidth, larger screen resolution support, HD video and enhanced user experiences. Both processors will be ready for customer sampling by end of 2012 and are expected to be shipping in commercial devices in the first quarter of 2013.

The MSM8225Q and MSM8625Q processors incorporate quad-core CPUs and are the upgraded software compatible variants of the highly successful Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8225 and MSM8625 processors, which both feature dual-core CPUs and dual SIM support. The quad-core variants will support LPDDR2 memory, increasing the bus bandwidth for improved features such as 720p display and 720p video encode and decode. Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8625Q features Qualcomm’s integrated multimode UMTS/CDMA modem, and the MSM8225Q has an integrated UMTS modem. Both processors enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM connectivity using the Qualcomm Atheros AR6005 and WCN2243 chips.

In addition, Qualcomm also announced a single platform, the Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8930, that supports all China operators with UMTS, CDMA and TD-SCDMA. Furthermore, this single platform will support LTE-TDD and TD-SCDMA, targeting mid-tier smartphones for use in China. Announced in February 2011, this processor features dual-core CPUs and as the world’s first single-chip solution with an integrated LTE modem, it is designed to take LTE to high-volume smartphones. Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8930 with LTE-TDD and TD-SCDMA support will be ready for customer sampling by the end of 2012 and is expected to be shipping in commercial devices by the first quarter of 2013.

Qualcomm will also be releasing Qualcomm Reference Design (QRD) versions of all three processors. The QRD program includes comprehensive handset development platforms and an ecosystem program providing access to third-party providers of tested and verified hardware and software components so customers can rapidly deliver differentiated smartphones to budget conscious consumers. The Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM connectivity technologies have been pre-validated and tested with the QRD platform to provide reduced time-to-market. There have been more than 50 public QRD-based product launches to date in collaboration with more than 40 OEMs, and there are 100 designs in progress, including QRD-based smartphones enabled by these new Snapdragon S4 Play and Plus processors, which are also expected to be available by the first quarter of 2013.

“Our broad portfolio of Snapdragon S4 mobile processors delivers the optimal balance of features and performance for the high-volume smartphone segment,” said Cristiano Amon, senior vice president and co-president of mobile and computing products. “By offering both dual-core and quad-core CPU versions of the Snapdragon S4 Play processor, we are providing our OEM and operating partners a competitive and differentiated platform.”

The new Snapdragon S4 Play and Plus processors are designed specifically for high-volume smartphones, and they provide device manufacturers the ability to migrate their existing Snapdragon S1-based designs to S4 dual- and quad-core CPU-based designs. This capability is particularly useful for device manufacturers looking to efficiently expand their smartphone product lines with more advanced 3G/LTE smartphone products.
